IRS Testing Procedures: What to Expect and How to Prepare?

Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with the IRS and their testing procedures. Has anyone else dealt with this recently? I'm not sure what to expect or how to prepare. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, IRS testing is the worst. I had to go through it last year and it was a total nightmare. What specific part are you struggling with?

Thanks for responding! I'm not even sure where to start. Do they test everything or just certain areas?

In my experience, they focused on income reporting and deductions. Make sure you have ALL your documents ready. And I mean ALL of them 😫

Yikes, that sounds intense. How long did the whole process take for you?

It dragged on for about 3 months. But I've heard some people get through it faster. Just depends on your situation and how prepared you are.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/IDKN1SpQoEI

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time.

Is this even legal? Seems like it might be against IRS rules or something.

As far as I know, it's totally legit. It's just a service that waits on hold for you. Nothing shady about it.

Listen up, because I've been through the IRS testing wringer and lived to tell the tale. Here's what you need to know: β€’ First, gather EVERY financial document you can think of. Bank statements, receipts, pay stubs, the works. β€’ They'll likely focus on areas where there might be discrepancies or unusual activity. β€’ Be prepared to explain any large deposits or withdrawals. β€’ If you have a business, make sure your books are immaculate. β€’ Don't try to hide anything. Seriously. They WILL find it. β€’ Consider hiring a tax professional to help you through the process. β€’ Stay calm and be patient. It's a long process, but panicking won't help. Remember, they're just doing their job. Be polite, be honest, and you'll get through this. Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! This is incredibly helpful. Did you use a tax professional yourself?

Yeah, I did. Best decision I made. They caught things I would've missed and probably saved me from a bigger headache down the road.

Has anyone had experience with the IRS's online portal for submitting documents during testing? Is it user-friendly or another government tech disaster? πŸ€”

LOL 'government' and 'user-friendly' in the same sentence? Good one! 🀣

It's actually not that bad. Bit clunky, but gets the job done. Just make sure your files aren't too large.

Quick tip: If you're going through IRS testing, start a spreadsheet to track all communications, document submissions, and important dates. Saved my butt more than once!

That's a great idea! I'm definitely going to do this. Any specific columns you'd recommend including?

For sure! I used Date, Action Taken, Documents Involved, IRS Response (if any), and Next Steps. Also had a column for notes/questions to ask next time I spoke with them.

Anybody else feel like they need a law degree just to understand half the stuff the IRS sends? πŸ§‘β€βš–οΈπŸ“š
