IRS Resolution Department Codes - Code 100 vs 900 Processing Times

I had what I would consider a somewhat productive call with the IRS today. The representative was, in my estimation, quite helpful and informative. According to him, my return is currently in the resolution department, which apparently has two possible code designations: Code 100 (which is supposedly the preferable one) and Code 900. From what I understand, Code 100 typically means they need to manually review your return, but it generally only takes about 3-4 days once it reaches that department. Code 900, on the other hand, isn't as favorable and can potentially take up to 10 weeks for processing. The agent informed me that I'm currently designated as Code 100 and advised that I should probably just keep checking WMR daily for updates. He also mentioned that taxpayers who end up with Code 900 have, in approximately 90% of cases, claimed one of the earlier stimulus payments from 2021, which tends to require more extensive verification.

You hit the jackpot with Code 100! I was in the same situation last month and my refund was processed in EXACTLY 4 days after hitting the resolution department. Don't wait until tomorrow - check WMR tonight at midnight! That's when they update the system and you might see movement. Code 100 means they're just verifying something simple, while Code 900 is the nightmare scenario with those stimulus claims requiring manual verification against previous year records.

Would this be similar to my situation where I had an education credit that needed verification? Mine took about a week compared to my brother's return that processed in 21 days with no special codes.

Thanks for the insights on the timing. I've seen exactly 27 cases of Code 100 in the tax forums I follow, and processing times ranged from 2-7 days, with an average of 4.2 days. I'm still not convinced the midnight check works consistently though - seems like server-side updates happen in batches.

When did you file originally? How long in processing before resolution? Did agent mention cycle code? Any transcript access? Specific error codes mentioned? Resolution department usually means human review needed.

You're like a tax lottery winner with Code 100! Think of the IRS like a hospital - Code 100 patients get seen by the doctor right away, while Code 900 folks are sitting in the waiting room for hours. I was impressed by your knowledge from the call. When my transcript had similar resolution codes, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze it. It's like having a tax code translator that explains what each code means for your specific situation and gave me an accurate timeline prediction. Like having an insider explain hospital codes so you know exactly when you'll be discharged.

I had the exact same Code 100 situation last month! My return was stuck for 3 weeks, then hit resolution, and exactly 4 days later my WMR updated to approved. The deposit hit my account the next morning! šŸ˜‚ I was checking WMR so often my phone basically had the page permanently cached. The relief when that bar finally moves is better than finding money in an old coat pocket.

I'm curious - did the agent mention when exactly your return entered the resolution department? On February 15th, I called about my return and was told it was in review, but they never mentioned these specific codes. Has anyone else had success calling the regular IRS number? I tried on March 3rd and waited 97 minutes before giving up. A friend recommended using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through - apparently they hold your place in line so you don't waste hours on hold. Anyone tried this service for resolution department questions?

You're absolutely in the best position with Code 100! Here's what this means: ā€¢ Code 100 = Simple verification needed ā€¢ Typically processed within 3-4 days ā€¢ No further action required from you ā€¢ Daily WMR checks recommended ā€¢ Transcript updates may precede WMR The resolution department handles discrepancies between reported information and IRS records. Code 100 means minor discrepancy that's quickly resolvable. You'll likely see movement this week.

So what happens if it's been in Code 100 for more than 4 days? Should we call back? Or is there a secondary review that sometimes happens after the initial resolution department review?

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6, even within Code 100 there can be variations in processing time based on the specific issue identified. The 3-4 day timeframe applies to standard verification issues, but if there's a potential math error correction under IRC 6213(b)(1), it might take 5-7 days as they must prepare and mail a notice explaining the adjustment. I've seen this happen quite often, but it's still much faster than Code 900 cases.

Has anyone considered that these codes might actually mean something completely different? Why would an IRS agent reveal internal coding systems to callers? Couldn't this just be that agent's way of explaining the process in simple terms? I've called three times about my return and got three completely different explanations. What if we focused on checking transcripts for actual IRS codes instead of these simplified explanations?

My tax return had a similar issue with the Resolution Department using Code 100 for review. The IRS agent explained they needed to verify my Adjusted Gross Income because it didn't match their records. It took exactly 3 days in Resolution, then my DDD (Direct Deposit Date) appeared on WMR. Received my $4,328 refund the following Wednesday. The Resolution Department is actually quite efficient with Code 100 cases!

Did you have to provide any additional documentation for your Code 100 review? I'm wondering if I should have documents ready just in case they contact me for verification.

I went through this exact situation last month. According to the IRS Processing Delays page (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue), Code 100 is their fast-track verification. My transcript updated exactly 3 days after entering Resolution with Code 100. The Transaction Code 571 appeared first (resolution of previous freeze), followed by 846 (refund issued). You can track these codes on the IRS2Go app or through the online transcript tool. Much more accurate than WMR!

The codes you mentioned are internal IRS processing designations. They aren't published officially but are known through collective experience. Code 100 typically indicates a discrepancy that can be resolved through automated or quick manual review. Most Code 100 cases resolve within 5 business days. Code 900 involves identity verification, prior year discrepancies, or potential fraud indicators. These require more extensive review. Keep checking your transcript daily for the most accurate status.
