IRS Online Payment Plan Setup Failing - Need Help ASAP!
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble setting up a payment plan with the IRS online. I've received a notice from them and tried to set it up through their website, but I keep running into issues. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice on what I should do next? I'm worried about missing deadlines and don't want to make things worse.

Ugh, dealing with the IRS is such a pain. I had a similar issue last year. Have you tried calling them directly? It might take forever to get through, but sometimes talking to a human is the only way to sort these things out.

•Yeah, I'm thinking that might be my only option at this point. Just dreading the hold times 😩

•Pro tip: call early in the morning right when they open. You'll have a better chance of getting through quickly.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

•How long did it take for them to call you back?

•It took about 2 hours in my case, but it beats sitting on hold yourself!

Before you call, make sure you have all your documents ready. They'll ask for: - Your most recent tax return - Any IRS notices you've received - Your current income and expenses - Bank account info if you want to set up direct debit Being prepared will make the process go much smoother. Good luck!

Honestly, the IRS's online systems are a joke. They need to get with the times and upgrade their tech. It's 2023 for crying out loud! 🤦♂️

•Preach! 🙌 I work in IT and I cringe every time I have to use a government website.

•To be fair, they're dealing with massive amounts of sensitive data. It's not easy to balance security and user-friendliness.

•That's no excuse. Private companies handle sensitive data all the time without these issues.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Double-check that you're eligible for an online payment plan. If you owe more than $50,000, you'll need to set it up by phone or mail. 2. Make sure you're using the correct IRS.gov link. There are a lot of scam sites out there. 3. If you're still having issues, try the IRS2Go mobile app. Sometimes it works when the website doesn't. 4. As a last resort, fill out Form 9465 (Installment Agreement Request) and mail it in. Remember, even if you can't pay in full, it's crucial to respond to the IRS. They're usually willing to work with you if you're proactive. If all else fails, consider hiring a tax professional. They can often navigate the system more easily and might save you money in the long run. Hope this helps!

Have you considered seeking help from a Taxpayer Advocate? They're an independent organization within the IRS that can help when you're having issues resolving problems with the IRS.

@Giovanni, I went through something similar last year. One thing that helped me was making sure I was logged into my IRS account BEFORE trying to set up the payment plan. Sometimes the system gets confused if you try to do it all in one session. Also, if you're getting error messages, try doing it during off-peak hours (like early morning or late evening) when fewer people are using the system. The IRS website can get overloaded during busy times. If you're still stuck after trying the browser/cache suggestions, definitely go with the phone route - it's frustrating but sometimes necessary!
