IRS Identity Issue - What to Expect and How to Handle It?

Hey everyone, I'm dealing with an identity issue with the IRS. Has anyone else gone through this? What should I expect? Any advice on how to handle it?

I found a way to solve IRS identity verification issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-nKQqNqS6c

Ugh, I've been there. It's a real pain. Have you received any specific letters from the IRS about this? That's usually where it starts.

Not yet, that's why I'm kinda worried. Should I be expecting something in the mail?

Yeah, typically they send a letter first. Keep an eye on your mailbox. If you don't get anything in a couple weeks, might be worth giving them a call to check.

This happened to me last year. Turned out someone had filed a fake return using my SSN. Took forever to sort out šŸ˜«

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? $20 seems steep.

I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth it IMO.

How long did you have to wait before they connected you?

It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They just called me when an agent was on the line.

Identity issues with the IRS can be a real headache. Here's what you need to know: ā€¢ First, don't panic. It's more common than you think. ā€¢ Check if you've received any notices from the IRS (Forms 5071C, 4883C, or 5747C) ā€¢ If you have, respond promptly. You'll likely need to verify your identity. ā€¢ If you haven't received anything, monitor your credit reports for suspicious activity. ā€¢ Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit reports. ā€¢ Gather important documents: Social Security card, driver's license, tax returns from previous years. ā€¢ Be prepared for a long process. Identity issues can take months to resolve. ā€¢ Keep detailed records of all communications with the IRS. Remember, the IRS will never initiate contact through email, text, or social media. If you're unsure about any communication, call the IRS directly using the number on their official website.

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! This is really helpful. I'll definitely start monitoring my credit reports.

This is great advice. Wish I had known all this when I went through it last year. Took me 6 months to sort everything out šŸ˜©

Have you checked your credit report recently? Sometimes identity issues with the IRS can be a sign of broader identity theft.

I haven't, but that's a good idea. I'll do that ASAP. Thanks for the tip!

Oof, identity issues are the worst. I had to deal with this last year and it was a nightmare. Took me like 6 months to get it all sorted out. Hang in there!

6 months?! šŸ˜± That's insane. Did you have to keep calling them or did they handle most of it through mail?

It was a mix. Lots of letters back and forth, but I also had to call a few times. Pro tip: try calling right when they open. The wait times are usually shorter.

Has anyone tried using a tax advocate service for this kind of thing? I've heard they can sometimes help speed up the process.

I used one last year for a different issue. They were helpful, but it still took a while. Might be worth looking into tho.

Make sure you're actually dealing with the IRS and not a scammer. There are a lot of tax scams out there. Always verify before giving out any personal info!

Good point! I'll double check everything. Thanks for the reminder.
