IRS Agent Said My Return Under Review Until March 15th - Then 45 Day Wait?
So I just got off the phone with the IRS this morning about my transcript I posted yesterday. Here's what happened step by step: 1. The agent checked my info and said nothing is showing on their end except that my return is being reviewed 2. She mentioned the review shouldn't take any longer than March 15th 3. After the review is done, there's a "possible" 45-day timeframe for me to actually receive my refund 4. She confirmed there's no letter being sent out or any action needed from me Does this normally seem to be the case? Will it actually take that long once they finish reviewing it? My husband and I filed jointly for the first time, so idk if that's related lol. Thanks in advance from a momma currently freaking out over how I'm going to pay bills smh š©

It's somewhat common, unfortunately. The IRS typically has a standard processing time of about 21 days for most e-filed returns, but they can, and often do, take longer if your return is selected for review. The agent is likely referring to what's sometimes called a "manual review" process, which tends to happen when there are possible discrepancies or when certain criteria trigger additional verification. It's possible, though not guaranteed, that you might receive your refund sooner than the 45-day estimate, as they sometimes provide worst-case scenarios. In my experience, reviews can be completed earlier than their stated deadline.

I appreciate this detailed explanation. The IRS has become much more thorough with their review processes in recent tax seasons. Manual reviews are indeed becoming more common as their automated systems flag more returns for verification. The timeline provided is technically accurate, but I've observed many cases where refunds were issued well before the maximum timeframe was reached.

Last year I was in the EXACT same situation. Called and called and couldn't get through for weeks. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to connect with an agent after my return was "under review" for 2 months. When I finally got through, they told me there was a simple verification issue they needed to clear up that took 5 minutes to resolve. Got my refund 8 days later. The whole "45 day" thing is just their standard line - could be faster, could be slower. I was also struggling with bills and the wait was killing me.

Wait, you paid for a service to call the IRS? I'm surprised that's even a thing. Couldn't you just keep calling yourself? I know the hold times are ridiculous but paying someone else to wait on hold seems excessive.

How much does that Claimyr service cost? I've been trying to get through to the IRS for weeks about my amended return and I'm getting desperate.

Did they actually solve your problem? Or just connect you? I need to know if it's worth it. Been trying to reach IRS for three weeks now.

I've been researching this process extensively, and it might be helpful to know that what you're experiencing appears to be a standard review procedure. If I'm understanding correctly, your return has been flagged for what they call an "income verification" or possibly a "refund hold review." These typically occur when there may be, um, discrepancies between reported income and what employers have submitted, or when certain credits trigger automatic reviews. I would cautiously suggest checking your wage and income transcript (if available) against what you reported on your return to make sure everything matches. Additionally, first-time joint filers sometimes face additional scrutiny, though that's not always the case.

This makes a lot of sense! I had a similar situation and found out it was because: ā¢ My employer submitted a corrected W-2 ā¢ The correction happened after I filed ā¢ The system automatically flagged it for review Once the review was complete, the refund came within a week.

Thank you for this info! My return has been under review since February 12, 2024, and I've been so worried. Knowing this is somewhat normal helps my anxiety.

When you mention "income verification," does that mean they're cross-referencing with the Information Returns Master File? And would a CP05 notice typically be generated for this type of review?

I went through this exact process last year. First I got the review notification, then had to wait about 3 weeks. Step 1: They completed the review. Step 2: Status changed to approved. Step 3: Received my refund 6 days later. The whole thing took about 30 days from start to finish, not the full 45 they quoted me. I was checking WMR daily and driving myself crazy!

Have you checked your tax transcript for any specific codes? The agent might have been vague on the phone, but your transcript could show codes like 570 (refund hold) or 971 (notice issued). Those would give more information about what's actually happening with your return. Also, did you claim any credits like the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit? Those automatically trigger longer processing times. And are you getting a large refund? Amounts over a certain threshold often get additional scrutiny.

Based on what you described, it sounds like your return is in the verification stage. I've been reading through the IRS processing guidelines on their website, and these reviews can vary greatly in duration. Have you considered using https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript? It helped me understand all those confusing codes when my return was under review last year. The tool explained that my 570 code was just a temporary hold during verification, not an audit like I feared. It also predicted my refund date accurately based on the pattern of codes, which gave me peace of mind during the wait.

I understand your stress about the bills - I've been there too. What the agent told you is actually somewhat encouraging, isn't it? They gave you a specific end date for the review rather than leaving it open-ended. And the fact that they said no letter is being sent and no action is needed from you? That's usually a good sign that there's nothing seriously wrong with your return. Have you considered what you might do if the refund doesn't arrive in time for your bills? Sometimes setting up a contingency plan can help reduce the anxiety while you wait. The IRS processes can feel so opaque sometimes, can't they?

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6.4.35.3, refund hold reviews must be completed within 45 days of the initial hold placement. This is mandated by IRC Section 6402(k) which requires the IRS to release refunds within this timeframe unless specific exceptions apply. Your situation appears to be following standard protocol, but you should mark March 15th on your calendar. If that date passes without update, you must contact them again immediately as the review completion deadline would have been missed. Time is critical in these cases - each day beyond their stated deadline strengthens your case for taxpayer advocate intervention under Revenue Procedure 2023-25.

Let me share what I've learned from handling dozens of these cases. The 45-day timeframe is their standard line, but in my experience, most refunds come much sooner after the review is completed. I had a client last year in your exact situation - return under review, worried about bills, first-time joint filer. Once their review was completed, the refund was issued in just 8 days. The key is that March 15th date - that's when you should see your transcript update with either a refund approved code (846) or a notice issued code (971). If you see code 846, you'll typically receive your refund within 5-7 days of that date. Keep checking your transcript daily after March 15th!
