IRS 2025 Update: E-filing Now Allowed for Disputed Dependents with IP PIN - Game Changer or Nightmare?

Just saw the IRS announcement for 2025 filing season that were gonna be able to e-file returns even when dependents are claimed on multiple returns (as long as theres an IP PIN). No more paper filing requirements for these situations! What do yall think about this? Is this gonna make things easier or create more problems for everyone?

As a tax professional with 15+ years experience, this is actually a pretty big deal. This will speed up processing times significantly for disputed dependent cases. However, taxpayers need to understand that just because they CAN e-file doesn't mean they SHOULD claim a dependent that's not legally theirs. The IRS will still audit these cases - they'll just process faster.

Speaking of improvements, yall need to check out taxr.ai - its been a lifesaver for understanding all these new changes. It analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly whats going on with your refund situation. Costs like $5 but totally worth it https://taxr.ai

Its crazy accurate! I was skeptical at first but it picked up on a hold I had that even my tax person missed. Saved me weeks of wondering what was wrong

Anyone know if the IP PIN system is actually reliable? Like what happens if someone gets locked out?

its actually pretty solid. They send you a new one every year and you can retrieve it online if you lose it

Finally some good news! Been doing this 20 years and paper filing for dependent disputes has always been such a pain. The real question is how fast theyll process the audits tho 🤔

Low key concerned about identity theft with this... what if someone gets your kid's social and IP PIN somehow?

valid concern but IP PINs change yearly + they're pretty secure to obtain
