ID Verification System Not Working - Was There Last Week!
Someone help me!! I just got my letter to verify my identity and I go online and now it's saying there's no way for me too verify online and it was just on there last week so what's going on now?? 😡 And I call the hotline and it says due too high call volume they can't help and hangs up on me! This is so frustrating! I need this refund for my car repairs since I can't do Uber without it working right. Has anyone else had the verification system disappear on them??

This ID verification stuff is like trying to get into a club where the bouncer keeps changing the password! One day the door's open, next day it's locked with no explanation. I've been trying to verify my identity for what feels like forever. Have you tried checking if your browser cookies are cleared? Sometimes it's like the system forgets who you are if you don't have the right digital breadcrumbs. I'm not 100% sure this will work, but it's worth a shot?

I remember going through this exact nightmare last year. The verification portal was working one day, then poof - gone the next! I eventually found out that their system undergoes maintenance every two weeks, typically on Wednesdays. If you try again in 48 hours, you might find it's back up. That worked for me after three failed attempts.

According to IRS Publication 5461, the ID verification process can temporarily limit online access if there have been multiple unsuccessful attempts from your IP address. This is actually a security feature designed to prevent unauthorized access attempts, though they certainly don't make this clear to taxpayers!

Wait... you mean the system can just... disappear? I thought these government websites were supposed to be stable. I'm filing for the first time this year and now I'm worried this might happen to me too. Is this really common?

Have you tried accessing the verification page using a different device? Sometimes these issues are device-specific. Here's what I'd do in your situation: 1. Try using a different browser first (Chrome instead of Firefox, etc) 2. Clear your cookies and cache completely 3. Try using a different device altogether (phone instead of computer) 4. Check if you're using any VPN that might be blocking access 5. Wait 24 hours and try again - sometimes their system just needs time to reset I know how stressful this is when you're counting on that money for something important like your car. The verification system has been extra glitchy this tax season.

Take a deep breath - this happens more often than you'd think! According to the IRS website forums, they've been experiencing intermittent outages with their identity verification portal since early March. You're definitely not alone in this frustration. When I couldn't get through on the phone either, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to connect with an IRS agent. It basically waits on hold for you and calls when an agent is available. I got through in about 40 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone and noted my account so I could proceed. Worth considering if you need this resolved quickly for your car repairs.

Hah! You actually paid money to talk to the IRS? I mean, I guess if it works... but I've always just called right when they open at 7am and usually get through. Though I'll admit this year has been particularly brutal with wait times. Did they actually solve your problem or just tell you to wait?

Ngl, I've been tempted to try something like this. Been calling the IRS for literally 3 days straight with no luck. Does this Claimyr thing actually work? Feels kinda sketchy to pay for something that should be free, but my sanity might be worth it at this point lol.

This is actually a known issue with the ID verification system right now. I work in tax preparation, and we've seen this exact problem with approximately 15% of our clients this season. The IRS verification system has been going offline intermittently since March 15th due to what they're calling "system enhancements." It's infuriating! 😤 In most cases, the verification portal becomes available again within 72 hours. However, if you need this resolved urgently for your car repairs, you can request an in-person appointment at your local Taxpayer Assistance Center. They're booking about 7-10 days out right now, but it's a guaranteed resolution.

This reminds me of what happened with the Child Tax Credit portal last year. It would work perfectly fine one day, then be completely inaccessible the next. Compared to private sector verification systems like what banks use, the IRS technology seems to be running on hamster wheels and duct tape. I eventually had to go to an in-person appointment too, but they resolved everything in about 30 minutes once I was there.

Have you checked if the letter has a specific deadline for verification? I had a similar issue on February 23rd when the system went down, but my letter stated I had until April 15th to complete the verification. The system came back online for me on February 26th. Also, which specific verification letter did you receive? There are actually three different types (5071C, 5747C, and 6331C), and each one has slightly different verification procedures. The letter number should be in the top right corner.

This might be somewhat helpful - the IRS actually announced system maintenance for their ID verification portal this week. It's possibly, though not definitely, related to what you're experiencing. Also, there's a separate verification phone line that's different from the main IRS number. It's generally less busy and specifically for ID verification issues. The number should be on your letter, usually at the bottom. If all else fails, you may need to verify by mail, which is frustrating but sometimes the only option when their systems are down. Just be aware that mail verification can add approximately 6-8 weeks to your refund timeline.
