Been locked out for 5 months - NY unemployment verification nightmare with no way to get through by phone
My verification system got messed up and I've been completely shut out from claiming my initial waiting period since February. The website keeps rejecting my login after a system error during my first verification attempt. The only option left is calling their phone line (the 5000 one). I've been trying for MONTHS now - calling early morning, late night, weekends, random times - and all I get is that automated message saying 'all representatives are busy, try again later' and then it hangs up. No option to leave a message, no callback feature, absolutely nothing. It's now July and I'm going crazy - bills piling up and no way to even start my claim. Has anyone managed to break through this phone barrier? I'm at my wits end.

Same exact boat. Been trying since May and its practically impossible to get through. The system is so broken its ridiculous. At this point im just applying to every job i can find cuz i cant count on ny unemployment to ever actually help.

After weeks of that same frustrating message, I finally found a service that got me through! I used this thing called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it basically kept dialing for me then connected me to an actual human when they finally picked up. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked within days after being stuck for months. Best decision I made after wasting hours upon hours redialing that stupid number. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Sounds sketchy af. How does that even work? 🤔

Natalia Stone
•Not sketchy at all! It just autodials the unemployment number over and over until it gets through, then calls your phone when a real person answers. Saved me literally days of redialing.

•this sounds like one of those fake miracle solutions that never actually works. does this ACTUALLY connect you or is this just another scam?

•I was super skeptical too but I was desperate. It actually worked - got a callback with a real agent after like 40 mins. After 3 months of trying myself and getting nowhere, this was worth every penny.

•wait do they need your ssn or any personal info to do this?

•No personal info at all. It just calls the unemployment line repeatedly until it gets through, then forwards the call to your phone when a human answers. You handle everything with the agent directly.

•I've seen so many 'solutions' for NY unemployment that are total BS. What makes this different from all the other garbage out there?

•It's just a call service, nothing magical. They don't claim to fix your problems - they just get you past the impossible phone barrier so you can talk to an actual agent. That's what I needed and it worked.

Pro tip: try calling exactly at 7:59am. For some reason the system sometimes lets you through right before they officially open at 8. Worked for me on my 3rd attempt but you gotta be quick! And have all your info ready cuz they dont give you much time.

•tried this everyday for a week straight and still nothing 😭 did u call on a specific day of the week?

•I got through on a Tuesday. Maybe try different days? Also make sure you're calling the right number - there's like 5 different ones and only some can actually help with verification issues.

•Tried this 8 times already, never works 😫 Always get that same stupid message about all agents being busy.

Have you tried contacting your state representative? I was stuck in verification hell for over two months and finally emailed my assemblyman. His office contacted unemployment on my behalf and I got a call back within a week. Worth a shot!

•I'll try this! Thanks for the suggestion. Never even occurred to me to go through a representative.

Listen, the whole system is DESIGNED to be impossible to get through. They make it hard on purpose so people give up. The less benefits they pay out, the better their budget looks. It's all a scam to deny people what they're legally entitled to. I've been fighting this system for months. 🤮

•Facts. Just look at how they reduced staff right when ppl need help the most. They don't care about us.

I work in IT and the NY unemployment system is literally running on technology from the 1980s. No exaggeration. The verification systems don't talk to each other properly and when ID.me has an issue, there's no automated way to resolve it. Your best bet is getting a human on the phone who can manually override the verification block in the legacy system. Keep trying different times - their call volume is lowest on Wed afternoons from what I've heard.

•Is that why the website looks like it was designed in 1997? 😂

•Exactly lol. The front-end got a facelift a few years ago but the back-end systems are ancient COBOL programs running on mainframes. When COVID hit they were literally calling retired programmers begging them to come help because nobody knows how to code for these dinosaur systems anymore.

Hey everyone - I'm going through something similar and wanted to share a comprehensive guide to what finally worked for me after 2 months of being locked out: 1. First, document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of errors, write down times/dates of calls, and keep a record of any confirmation numbers. 2. Try multiple contact methods simultaneously - don't just rely on phone. Use their message portal on the website (even if it seems unrelated to your issue). 3. For phone calls, I found Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 8:30-9:15am had slightly better odds. Avoid Mondays completely. 4. Contact your state representative AND state senator (do both). Provide them your claim info and detailed timeline. 5. If you're completely desperate, the service at claimyr.com actually worked for me after nothing else did. They dial repeatedly until they get through, then connect you to an agent. 6. When you finally get an agent, be extremely polite but firm. Ask for their ID number and name. Request they make detailed notes on your account. 7. If they can't help immediately, ask specifically for an "escalation to a tier 2 specialist" - using those exact words triggers a different protocol. Hope this helps someone! The system is broken but not completely impenetrable.

•Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown. Gonna try all of these methods. Did you eventually get your issue fixed completely?

Jackie Martinez
•Yes! Once I finally got through to a tier 2 agent, they were able to manually override the ID verification issue. Took about 10 days after that for everything to process and get my first payment. Hang in there!

•I've been hearing about this claimyr thing. How does it work exactly?

•It basically autodials the unemployment number over and over using their system. When they finally get through to an agent, they call your phone and connect you. Saves you from having to manually redial for hours/days. Worked for me after weeks of trying myself.

Don't waste ur time with the 8124 number. The real secret is to call the fraud department at 888-598-2077. They answer much faster and can transfer you to claims once ur actually talking to someone. Worked for me last week!

•Just tried this and they said they can't transfer to claims anymore. Apparently too many people were using this trick 😑

I know this sounds weird but I suggest calling from a different phone number if you can. I was using my cell for weeks with no luck. Borrowed my mom's phone and got through on the second try. I think they might be filtering certain numbers that call too frequently. Just a theory but worth trying!

Heads up - they just added a new verification tool last month that might help. If you go to the website and click on "ID Verification Issues" there's a new form you can submit that's supposed to alert a specialist to your case. Worth a shot if you're still locked out!

•Thanks for this! Can't find that option though - is it under a specific section?

•It's kinda buried - go to Contact Us → Claims Assistance → ID Verification Problems. But honestly, even after filling it out, you'll prob still need to talk to someone. I used claimyr.com to finally get through on the phone after submitting that form 3 times with no response.
