NY unemployment phone line keeps telling me to call back - who can I actually reach?
Been trying to file my unemployment claim for the past 2 weeks but I'm going crazy with this phone system. Every single time I call the number listed on the website, I just get an automated message telling me they're experiencing high call volume and to call back later. I've tried calling at different times - early morning (7:30am), mid-day, afternoon, even right before they close. Always the same message! I've even tried using different phones thinking maybe that was the issue. Has anyone successfully gotten through? Is there a secret number or extension I should be using? This is getting ridiculous and my bills are starting to pile up. I need to file this claim ASAP.

Welcome to the lovely NY unemployment system 🤡 I tried for almost 3 weeks straight calling multiple times a day. It's designed to keep you out I swear.

•3 weeks?! I can't wait that long... my rent is due next Friday 😫

•its definitely intentional. they make it impossible to reach anyone so they dont have to pay out benefits. the whole system is rigged against us.

I was in the exact same boat last month - called like 50 times and got nowhere. Finally I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you and connects you when they reach a live agent. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. Best decision I made after wasting so many hours on hold. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been burned by so many unemployment 'solutions' before

•Totally worked for me! They just keep calling until they get through then connect you. No more listening to that awful hold music for hours 😂

•Not a scam! They just do the calling for you. I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. Got connected to an agent who fixed my claim in 10 minutes.

•I get the skepticism, I really do. But when you've called 100+ times with no luck, it's worth a shot. claimyr.com seriously saved me weeks of frustration.

Try calling exactly at 8:00am when they open. That's how I finally got through after 10 days of trying. Also try pressing 0 repeatedly during the automated message - sometimes that can bump you to an agent.

THE ENTIRE NY UNEMPLOYMENT SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been dealing with this garbage for MONTHS. The website crashes, the phone lines are always busy, and when you finally get through, half the time they transfer you and you get disconnected. I've lost so much money because of their incompetence.

•Have you tried contacting your state representative? Sometimes they can help push claims through. That's what finally worked for me.

•Tried that too. My rep's office said theyre flooded with unemployment cases and put me on some list. Haven't heard anything in 3 weeks 🤷♂️

Here's what worked for me with ny unemployment (after 5 weeks of torture): First, document EVERYTHING. Every call, every email, every attempt to contact them. Note the time, date, and any reference numbers. Try calling this alternative number: 1-888-209-8124. It sometimes has a different queue than the main line. If that doesn't work, try filing a complaint through the DOL website. This sometimes flags your account for review. Reach out to your state senator and assembly member simultaneously. Their constituent services can often escalate claims. As a last resort (and what ultimately worked for me), I used claimyr.com - it's a service that keeps calling for you until it gets through, then connects you to an agent. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying. Don't give up! The system is frustrating by design, but persistence pays off. Keep detailed records of everything so when you do reach someone, you have all the info ready.

•Thank you for such a detailed response! I'll definitely try that alternative number tomorrow morning. How long did the whole process take you from start to finish?

•From initial claim to first payment was about 6 weeks total. But once I actually spoke to someone, it was resolved in days.

•Sorry to hear that. It's definitely hit or miss. The claimyr option was my last resort but it did work for me when nothing else would.

Their entire phone system is pure gaslighting. "Your call is important to us" MY ASS. If it was important they'd hire enough people to answer the damn phones.

Can you do most of the filing online? I managed to do 90% of my claim on the website and only had to call for one specific question.

•I tried but I get an error message after the identity verification step that says I need to call to complete my claim. Super frustrating!

•Ah that sucks. Probably means there's some flag on your account that needs manual review. Those are the worst 😕

•they don't handle your claim or anything - just connect you to a real NYSDOL agent. I was skeptical too but desperate times call for desperate measures lol

Try emailing instead!! Sometimes they respond faster that way. Use unemployment@labor.ny.gov and put your full name and last 4 of SSN in the subject line.

•DO NOT do this! Never include any part of your SSN in an email subject or body. That's incredibly insecure.

This is why we need to vote differently next election. The entire unemployment system in this state is broken and nobody in charge seems to care.

I feel your pain! Just went through this nightmare myself last month. Here's what finally worked for me: I called the main number (1-888-209-8124) every single day at exactly 8:00 AM when they opened. It took me about 12 days of this routine, but I finally got through to a human. The key is persistence and timing - avoid calling during lunch hours or late in the day when volume is highest. Also, when you do get through to the automated system, don't hang up if you get the "call back later" message right away. Sometimes if you wait a few minutes, it will actually put you in a queue. Keep trying different days of the week too - I had better luck on Wednesday mornings. Hang in there, you'll get through eventually!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! 12 days is still a lot but at least there's light at the end of the tunnel. I've been calling randomly throughout the day so maybe I need to be more strategic about the timing. Did you notice any difference between different days of the week, or was Wednesday just luck?

I'm dealing with the exact same nightmare right now! Been calling for over a week and it's driving me insane. What really gets me is that automated message - "your call is important to us" - like if it was actually important they'd answer the phone! I've tried calling at literally every hour they're open and it's always the same story. The worst part is you can't even get in a queue, it just hangs up on you. I'm going to try some of the tips mentioned here like calling right at 8am and that alternative number. This whole system feels designed to make you give up before you even get started. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - at least I know I'm not alone in this mess!

•I totally feel your frustration! That automated message is absolutely infuriating - it's like they're mocking us at this point. I've been in the same boat for about 10 days now and I'm losing my mind. The fact that they don't even put you in a queue is just cruel. I'm definitely going to try that 8am strategy that @Ezra Collins mentioned - seems like timing really is everything with this broken system. We shouldn t'have to become phone call strategists just to access benefits we re'entitled to! Keep us posted on how the alternative number works out for you.

OMG I could have written this post myself! I've been going through the exact same torture for the past week and a half. That stupid automated message plays in my nightmares at this point 😭 I've literally tried calling over 40 times at different hours and NOTHING. The system is absolutely broken and it feels intentional at this point. One thing I discovered though - if you call and get that message, don't hang up immediately. Sometimes if you wait like 30-45 seconds it will actually say something different or give you menu options. It's rare but it happened to me twice (though I still didn't get through to a person). Also saw people mentioning Claimyr and I'm honestly tempted to try it at this point because I'm running out of options and patience. Has anyone else here actually used it successfully? I'm usually skeptical of these services but desperate times... Hang in there @Omar Hassan - we're all in this nightmare together!

•@Brianna Schmidt Thanks for that tip about waiting after the automated message! I hadn t'thought to try that - I always just hung up in frustration. Definitely going to try that next time along with the 8am strategy. I ve'been seeing Claimyr mentioned a lot in this thread and I m'getting curious about it too. Like you said, normally I d'be super skeptical but when you re'this desperate... Has anyone who used it been able to share more details about how it actually works? I m'worried about giving my info to some random service but if it actually gets you connected to a real NYSDOL agent, it might be worth looking into. This whole situation is just insane - we shouldn t'need third-party services just to access our own benefits! But here we are 🤦♂️
