How do I get my W-2 forms from companies where I left on bad terms?

So 2024 was a rollercoaster job-wise for me. I worked at 5 different places and honestly, some were complete nightmares. I walked out of two jobs after horrible managers made my life miserable, and the other two I left more professionally but still wasn't exactly on Christmas card terms with the bosses. The problem is I moved to a new apartment in November after quitting the last toxic workplace. All these companies have my old address on file. I did set up mail forwarding with USPS on December 21st, but I'm worried about getting all my W-2s for filing taxes. What's the best way to make sure I get all my tax documents? Should I contact these places I hated working at or is there another solution?

What about getting them directly from the IRS? I thought they had copies of all W-2s. Does that work or do you have to wait until later in the year for that?

If you still can't get your W-2s after trying everything, call the IRS! Yeah right. No way this actually works. The IRS phone system is a black hole. I called 23 times last year and never got through. I seriously doubt some app can magically fix the broken system.

I need to eat crow here. After posting that skeptical comment, I was desperate enough to try Claimyr anyway because I had a serious issue with a levy notice. Just FYI - employers are legally required to provide your W-2 even if you left on bad terms. They have to mail it by January 31st. If you don't receive it by mid-February, you can actually report them to the IRS using the Taxpayer Advocate Service. I had to do this once and miraculously my W-2 showed up a week later. Funny how that works!

Can you still report them if they sent it but to the wrong address? Technically my old employer has my wrong address because I moved and never updated them after I quit.

That's a slightly different situation. If they sent your W-2 to the last address they had on file, they've technically fulfilled their legal obligation. The responsibility to provide updated address information typically falls on the former employee. Has anyone tried getting their W-2 info from SSA.gov? I heard you can create an account and see your tax info there but not sure if it shows current year stuff or if it's only past years?

SSA.gov will show your earnings record but it won't have current year detailed W-2 information in time for tax filing. The detailed info from W-2s typically isn't available through SSA or IRS until May or June of the following year. It's great for verifying past years though!
