How can I get a copy of Form 1095-A if I'm not the policy holder? Need help for marketplace insurance tax form
I need to get my hands on a Form 1095-A for my taxes, but I'm not the main policyholder on my parents' health insurance plan. The IRS is telling me I need this form since the insurance was through the marketplace. Just to be clear - I don't want to ask my parents for a copy of the form. That's not an option for me right now. I'm trying to find out if there's a way for me to request my own copy directly from whoever issues these forms. I know the 1095-A is important for filing my taxes correctly, and I'm trying to handle this independently. I'm wondering if I can contact the marketplace directly or if there's some other official channel where I can request this document as a dependent on someone else's policy. Has anyone dealt with this before or know the proper procedure for getting your own 1095-A when you're not the policyholder?

You do have a few options to get your Form 1095-A without going through your parents: You can create your own HealthCare.gov account and link it to your marketplace application. Even though you're a dependent on the policy, you can still create your own login and access the forms related to your coverage. Go to HealthCare.gov, create an account with your own information, and then call the Marketplace Call Center (1-800-318-2596) to have them link your account to the application. Alternatively, you can contact the Marketplace Call Center directly and request that they mail you a copy of the form. You'll need to verify your identity and provide information about the policy, but as someone who was covered under the plan, you should be able to get your own copy. If your state runs its own marketplace (not HealthCare.gov), the process is similar but you'll need to contact your state's specific marketplace.

•Thank you for the detailed response! I've been super stressed about this. Do you know what kind of verification information I'll need when I call the Marketplace Call Center? Also, do you know roughly how long it might take to get the form once I request it? I'm trying to file my taxes soon.

•When you call the Marketplace Call Center, you'll typically need to provide your full name, date of birth, address, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number to verify your identity. They might ask additional questions to confirm you're on the policy. As for timing, if you create an online account and get linked to the application, you can download the 1095-A immediately. If you request a mailed copy, it generally takes 7-10 business days to arrive. If you're in a hurry to file, the online method is definitely faster.

I was in a similar situation last year and struggled with getting my form. After multiple failed attempts with the marketplace call center (long hold times and disconnections), I found an online service called taxr.ai that helped me resolve my issue. I uploaded my ID and a few details at https://taxr.ai and they were able to help me obtain my 1095-A without involving my parents. Their document retrieval service specifically helped with marketplace forms, and they walked me through exactly what information I needed to provide to verify my identity as a dependent on the policy. Saved me so much headache!

•Did they charge you for this service? I've been on hold with the marketplace for like 2 hours twice this week and I'm getting desperate, but I'm also on a tight budget.

•How exactly does this work? I'm hesitant to give my personal info to a third party. Did you have to provide your SSN or just the last four digits? And how long did the whole process take from start to finish?

•They have different service tiers, but I used their basic option which was reasonable considering the time it saved me. They have the pricing on their site, but it was worth every penny for me because I needed my tax forms quickly. For verification, I only had to provide the last four digits of my SSN, not the full number. They use the same verification standards as the official marketplace but with much better customer service. The process took about 2 days total - I uploaded my info on Thursday and had my 1095-A by Saturday morning. Much faster than the marketplace's mailed option.

Just wanted to follow up! I decided to try taxr.ai after posting my skeptical question, and I'm honestly shocked at how smoothly it went. The process was super straightforward, and they helped me get my 1095-A without any awkward conversations with my parents. I uploaded my ID and the required verification info on Tuesday evening, and by Thursday morning I had access to my form. The customer service rep explained exactly what was happening at each step, which made me feel much more comfortable about sharing my information. For anyone in a similar situation - definitely worth checking out!

If you're still struggling to get your form and need to speak directly with the marketplace but can't get through, I had success using Claimyr to connect with a real person at the healthcare marketplace. You can check it out at https://claimyr.com - they basically hold your place in the phone queue and call you when they reach a human. I waited for 3+ hours on my own before giving up, but with their service I got through in about 45 minutes without sitting on hold. There's a demo video of how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was able to verify my identity over the phone and request my own copy of the 1095-A even though my spouse was the policyholder.

•How does this actually work? Do they just call and then transfer you or something? I'm confused about how they can hold your place in line.

•Yeah right, sounds too good to be true. I've called the marketplace like 5 times and always get disconnected after waiting forever. No way this actually works - they probably just take your money and you still end up waiting.

•They use a system that navigates through the phone menu and waits on hold for you. Once a real person answers, you get a call and are connected to that representative. It's not a transfer - they're literally just waiting in line for you. I was skeptical too, but it genuinely worked for me. I was able to enjoy my morning instead of being stuck on hold for hours. When they finally reached a representative, my phone rang, I picked up, and I was already connected to a marketplace employee who helped me get my 1095-A form.

I need to apologize and correct myself. After posting my skeptical comment, I was desperate enough to try Claimyr anyway. I honestly can't believe it, but it actually worked! I've spent HOURS trying to reach the marketplace on my own over the past two weeks, but with their service I got through to a real person in about 35 minutes. The marketplace rep was able to verify me as a dependent on the policy and send me my own copy of the 1095-A. They're mailing a physical copy, but the rep also helped me create my own marketplace account where I could download the form immediately. Wish I'd known about this service weeks ago instead of wasting so much time on hold!

Another option is to contact your state's Department of Insurance. In some states, they can help you get access to your health insurance records if you're listed as a covered individual, even if you're not the policyholder. I did this last year when I needed documentation for a tax amendment and couldn't get it from my ex who was the policyholder. Worth a try if the direct marketplace approach doesn't work.

•Would this work even if the insurance was through the federal marketplace and not a state one? My state doesn't have its own marketplace system.

•It can still work with federal marketplace plans. The state insurance department might not have direct access to the documents, but they can often advise you on your rights to your own insurance information and may be able to facilitate the process with the federal marketplace. In my case, I was in a state using the federal marketplace, and the state department helped me understand exactly what documentation I needed to provide to prove I was entitled to my own copies of the insurance forms. They didn't access the form directly but gave me the exact procedure to follow with the federal marketplace.

Has anyone tried requesting the form through the IRS directly? I heard they sometimes have copies of the forms that were submitted for you.

•The IRS doesn't have 1095-A forms available for request. They receive the information from the marketplace, but they don't provide copies to taxpayers. You have to get it from the marketplace directly. I tried this route and got nowhere - had to go back to the marketplace.

Just to add another perspective - I had this exact issue and eventually had to ask my parents. I know you don't want to, but sometimes it's honestly the easiest way. Took me 2 weeks of bureaucratic nonsense before I gave in and just asked them. Had the form in 5 minutes. Sometimes the simplest solution really is the best one, depending on your situation of course.

•I appreciate the suggestion, but there are personal reasons why I can't go that route. I'm trying to handle all my tax stuff independently now, and contacting my parents for this isn't an option for me.

I completely understand wanting to handle this independently. Based on what others have shared, it sounds like creating your own HealthCare.gov account and calling the Marketplace Call Center is your best bet for getting the form officially. If you're having trouble getting through on the phone (which seems to be a common issue), you might want to try calling early in the morning or later in the evening when call volumes are typically lower. When I had to deal with government phone lines before, I found Tuesday through Thursday mornings around 8 AM worked better than Mondays or Fridays. Make sure you have all your personal information ready - full name, DOB, address, and SSN. You might also want to know approximate dates of coverage and any reference numbers from the original marketplace application if you have access to that information. Good luck with getting this sorted out! It's frustrating when you're trying to be responsible about your taxes but bureaucracy makes it difficult.

•Thanks for the practical timing advice! I hadn't thought about calling at specific times of day. I've been trying during lunch breaks which is probably peak time. I'll definitely try early morning calls - that's a great tip. Do you happen to know if the Marketplace Call Center is open on weekends? I have more flexibility to make calls then, but I wasn't sure if they operate 7 days a week or just weekdays. Also, regarding the reference numbers from the original application - since I wasn't the one who applied, would I need to know the primary applicant's information too, or just my own details as a dependent on the plan?
