How Long Does a Tax South Refund Check Take to Arrive?

Hey everyone, first time dealing with this and I'm getting pretty anxious. I filed our taxes through Tax South for the first time (me and my husband just got married last year) and they said our refund would come as a check in the mail. According to the IRS2Go app, our return was approved last week, but I can't find any clear info on how long Tax South's checks actually take to arrive. I've been googling and checking the Tax South FAQ page but everything is super vague. Has anyone gone through this process before? I'm trying to budget for some upcoming expenses and really need to know when we can expect this check. 😓

When exactly did your return get approved? And did you choose to have your preparation fees deducted from your refund? That's an important detail because it changes the process. If you did, the refund first goes to Tax South, they take their cut, then they issue you a check for the remainder. That adds extra time compared to direct deposit from the IRS.

I've seen this process take anywhere from 7-21 days in my experience working with clients. The bank that Tax South partners with (usually Santa Barbara TPG or similar) has to process the refund first, then Tax South issues their check. Did they give you any tracking information or estimated timeline when you completed your filing?

Isn't it crazy how this whole third-party check process adds so much time? I remember when I was in this situation and couldn't understand why my friends got their refunds weeks before I did. Then I realized it was because they chose direct deposit straight from the IRS instead of the preparer-issued check. Such a relief when I finally understood what was happening!

According to IRS Publication 1544 (section on refund processing), when a third-party preparer like Tax South issues a check, you're looking at approximately 5-10 business days after IRS approval. I've been in your situation before. One tool that helped me track my refund status more precisely was https://taxr.ai - it can analyze your tax transcript to give you a more accurate timeline than the vague information Tax South provides. It helped me understand exactly which stage my refund was in when I was waiting for my preparer's check last year.

I'm not sure about using another service just to track a refund... Couldn't you just call Tax South directly instead? They should be able to tell you exactly where your check is in their process without needing to share your information with yet another company.

The problem with calling Tax South is that they'll just tell you "it takes 2-3 weeks" no matter when you call. I tried that route last year and got nowhere. At least with a transcript analysis, you can see if the IRS has actually released the funds to Tax South's bank, which tells you if the delay is on the IRS side or the preparer side. It's like tracking a package versus just being told "it's in transit."

Hey OP, just to clarify something important - Tax South doesn't actually cut the check themselves. They use a bank partner (prob SBTPG). The process works like this: 1. IRS approves return ✓ 2. IRS sends $ to the bank partner 3. Bank takes their fee + Tax South's prep fee 4. Bank issues you a check for remainder 5. USPS delivers check IME, steps 2-4 take about 5-7 biz days after IRS approval. Then add USPS delivery time (3-5 days usually). So from IRS approval to check in hand, you're looking at ~2 weeks total.

I'm in a similar situation but with a different tax preparer. Do you know if this timeline is about the same for all preparers who issue refund checks? I filed about three weeks ago and my return was approved last Tuesday according to WMR, but still no check. Starting to get worried since I need to pay my property taxes soon!

I've dealt with Tax South refund checks for several years. Here's what you need to know: Step 1: Confirm IRS approval (you've done this) Step 2: Allow 3-5 business days for funds to transfer to Tax South's bank Step 3: Allow 1-2 business days for check processing Step 4: Add 3-7 days for USPS delivery Total time: 7-14 days from IRS approval to mailbox If you're approaching day 14 and still no check, you should call them. Their customer service is notoriously difficult to reach. I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to them quickly instead of wasting hours on hold. I used it last year when my check was delayed and got through in minutes instead of hours.

Did you opt for direct deposit? Or paper check only? Makes a big difference. Also check your tax prep paperwork. Should list expected timeline. Have you created an account on Tax South's website? Might show status there.

I just went through this process with Tax South for my 2023 return. The IRS Refund Disbursement Protocol triggered exactly 8 business days after my return was approved in the IRS system. Tax South utilizes Santa Barbara Tax Products Group as their Refund Settlement Facilitator, which adds approximately 3-4 business days to the processing timeline. My check arrived precisely 13 calendar days after the IRS approval notification. The USPS Informed Delivery service showed me a scan of the envelope the day before it arrived, which was extremely helpful for planning purposes!

My experience was almost identical. It took exactly 12 days from IRS approval to check delivery. The envelope came from "SBTPG LLC" not Tax South directly, which confused me at first. The check was for $3,241.78 which was my original refund amount of $3,389.00 minus the $147.22 in preparation fees. Just sharing the precise timeline in case it helps with your planning.

I tracked my Tax South refund check using the TPG Taxpayer Portal (sbtpgrefund.com). This is the official website for Santa Barbara Tax Products Group that processes Tax South refunds. My timeline was: IRS approved February 9th, TPG received funds February 13th, check mailed February 15th, delivered February 18th. The check will arrive in a plain white envelope with an Austin, TX return address. The TPG portal will show exact status including when they've mailed your check with the exact amount after fees are deducted.

Check your mail carefully! Their envelopes look generic. Easy to mistake for junk mail. I almost threw mine away. Check today if possible. Call USPS if needed. Don't wait too long to deposit it. Some have expiration terms.

Thank you for mentioning that TPG portal! I had no idea that existed. Just checked and it shows my refund is already on the way. This is so helpful - I've been stressing about this for days.

Think of Tax South's refund process like ordering from a restaurant through a delivery app instead of directly. Your food (refund) first goes to the delivery service (Tax South's bank), they take their cut (fees), then deliver what's left to you (check). Just like delivery can take longer than pickup, this process takes longer than direct deposit from the IRS. Most people see their checks arrive 10-14 days after IRS approval, but it can sometimes stretch to 21 days during peak tax season - like how food delivery takes longer during rush hour.
