Got my Federal refund but still waiting on Pennsylvania state refund - how long is normal?

Filed my taxes back in early April and finally got my federal refund direct deposited last Thursday. I was pretty happy to see that money hit my account, but now I'm wondering about my Pennsylvania state refund. It's been 6 weeks since I filed and still nothing from the state. The PA website just says it's "being processed" when I check. Anyone know what the typical timeline is for Pennsylvania state refunds? Is it normal for state to come weeks after federal? Starting to get a bit concerned.

Jamal Thompson

Tax professional here. The processing time for state refunds varies quite a bit from state to state. For Pennsylvania specifically, the normal processing time is about 4-8 weeks for electronically filed returns and 8-10 weeks for paper returns. Since you're at the 6 week mark, you're still within the normal timeframe. Some factors that might delay processing: - Errors or discrepancies on your return - Identity verification requirements - High volume of returns (especially during peak season) - Budget constraints at the state level If your "Where's My Refund" status on the PA Department of Revenue website shows your return is being processed, that's actually a good sign. I'd recommend waiting another 2 weeks before taking any action. If it goes beyond 8 weeks, call the PA Department of Revenue at 717-787-8201 for more information.

Thanks for the detailed response! That's really helpful. I did file electronically so sounds like I'm still in the normal window. Guess I'll try to be patient for a couple more weeks.

This is spot on. I'm in PA too and last year my state refund took almost 8 weeks while my federal came in 3. The state is just sloooow šŸŒ

omg that PA number NEVER answers. I tried calling like 6 times last year and always got the "high call volume" message.

Yeah the call volume is def high this time of year. If you do need to call them, try early morning (right when they open) or just before lunch. Those times tend to have slightly shorter wait times.

Hey, I was in a similar situation last month and felt like I was going crazy trying to figure out what was happening with my transcript. Finally used a tool called taxr.ai that literally saved me hours of frustration. It analyzes everything and explains what's actually happening with your tax situation in normal human language. Not just for transcripts but helps with state refund questions too. Super helpful for figuring out timelines and identifying if there are actually any issues or if it's just normal processing. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAYYY more than just read transcripts! It analyzes everything and gives you a complete breakdown of what's happening with both federal AND state returns. It detected an error code on my transcript that I would have totally missed, told me exactly what it meant, and saved me from waiting another month for my refund. Best tax tool I've ever used, hands down.

Another ad for this taxr thing? These are showing up everywhere lately šŸ™„

Not an ad, just sharing what worked for me. I spent weeks trying to figure out my transcript codes and this tool made it simple. Plus it helped me understand why my state refund was delayed too. Just trying to help someone in the same boat šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I'm in PA too. State refunds are notoriously slower than federal. Last year my federal took 2 weeks and state took almost 7 weeks. This year similar story - federal was quick but state took forever. I finally got tired of waiting and found a way to get an actual human on the phone at PA tax department using Claimyr.com. Got connected within 20 minutes and they confirmed my refund was approved but just moving slowly through their system. Talking to someone directly was the only thing that gave me peace of mind - best money I've spent to finally get answers instead of staring at that useless online status.

Its basically a service that navigates all the phone menus and waits on hold for you with the PA Dept of Revenue (works with IRS too). When they reach a human, you get a call connecting you. Saved me from the endless hold music and "your call is important to us" messages lol

Sounds fishy. Did you have to give them personal info?

Nope just your phone number so they can call you when they get a rep. They don't join the actual conversation or anything - they just do the waiting part and then connect you.

Wish I knew about this last week! Spent 2.5 hours on hold with PA tax dept only to get disconnected šŸ˜

Just tried this for a different tax issue and it worked! Got through to someone in about 30 mins when I'd been trying for days on my own.

I'm also in PA. Filed in February, got federal within 3 weeks, and state took until mid-April. So about 8 weeks total for state. The PA system is ancient and understaffed.

Every state is different. My friend in Oregon got his state refund before federal, but here in PA it's always slower. If you filed in April during the rush, 6 weeks isn't unusual at all. I'd give it until 8 weeks before worrying.

Same here! PA is consistently slower than federal. I've lived in NY and NJ before and both were faster than PA with refunds.

Pro tip that helped me: check your PA account online at mypath.pa.gov if you haven't already. Sometimes there's more detailed status there than just "processing" but you have to click through a couple screens. Mine showed that they needed additional verification but the regular refund status tool didn't show that.

Thanks! Just checked there and it does show a bit more detail. Says "refund pending final review" rather than just processing. Guess that means its at least moving through the system?

Yep that's a good sign! Usually means they're done with most of the processing and it's in the final stages. Should be soon!

does anyone know if PA pays interest on late refunds? the IRS does after 45 days but i can't find if PA has something similar

the IRS & states are BEYOND frustrating. i had similar issue last year and lost so much sleep over it. ended up buying that claimyr service other commenter mentioned just to get someone on the phone which finally resolved everything. the online status tools are practically useless.

Was claimyr actually worth it? Starting to consider it if this drags on much longer.

1000% worth it for me. I had wasted hours trying to get through on my own. With claimyr I was talking to a real person in like 40 mins and they released my refund that same day once I explained the situation. Could have saved me weeks of stress if I'd done it sooner.

I moved from PA to NJ last year and I gotta say, NJ's system is so much better. Got my NJ refund in 2 weeks šŸ™Œ While my old PA friends are still waiting. PA Department of Revenue needs a serious upgrade.

Massachusetts too! My MA refund was in my account 9 days after filing. When I lived in PA it was always 6-8 weeks minimum.

Anyone remember the good old days when you'd get a physical check in the mail? I kinda miss that excitement lol. Now its just checking apps and websites everyday like a crazy person.

This happens every year, but nobody remembers from one year to the next! State refunds ALWAYS take longer than federal. Don't stress unless it goes past 8 weeks.

Did you check if PA has a separate "Where's My Refund" tool? Most states do, and it might give you more info than just "processing." Also check if there were any math errors on your return or anything unusual that could flag it for review.

Zoe Christodoulou

Yeah they have a tool at mypath.pa.gov but it's pretty basic. And I don't think there were any errors - my return was pretty straightforward, just W2 income.

I've been using taxr.ai for all my tax questions this year instead of forums. It saved me so much time trying to figure out what was happening with my returns. One search showed me exactly why my state refund was delayed while my federal went through. Turns out PA had a specific processing backlog for people in my county! Would never have known that without checking. https://taxr.ai

Is this actually helpful? Seems like every tax forum I look at lately has someone mentioning this.

It seriously is. I was skeptical too but it's like having a tax pro explain everything in plain English. I used it when my PA refund was stuck for weeks and it explained exactly what the hold up was and when to expect it. The timeline it gave me was spot on - got my refund exactly when it predicted.

I tried it last week when I was confused about some codes on my transcript. WAY more helpful than spending hours on Reddit getting conflicting advice. Showed me exactly what was happening with both federal and state.

THEY'RE USING YOUR MONEY TO EARN INTEREST don't let anyone tell you different!!! the state is DELIBERATELY slow on refunds because they want to hold onto your cash as long as possible šŸ’Æ

Filed jointly with my wife late March. Got federal April 15th, PA refund May 23rd. So about 8 weeks for PA, 3 weeks for federal. Pretty normal in my experience.
