Got Code 570 Today - Employer Just Submitted W-2 Info. Is That Why I'm On Hold?

I got code 570 this morning on my transcript. I called my employer and they told me they haven't sent in our W-2 information to the IRS until today! Could that be the reason my refund is on hold? I'm really worried because I was counting on this money. This is my first time filing with multiple gig jobs plus a regular job. I filed back in February and everything seemed fine until now. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

This could possibly be related to your employer's late W-2 submission, though it's not necessarily the only factor. The code 570 typically indicates that the IRS has temporarily frozen your account, which might be due to a mismatch between your reported income and what they have on file. Given that your employer just submitted the W-2 information today, there's a strong likelihood this is causing the discrepancy. You should consider checking your transcript again in approximately 7-10 days, as the system might need time to reconcile the newly submitted information. This is particularly urgent if you were counting on these funds soon.

I'm not entirely sure, but wouldn't the IRS typically match the information you submitted against what they have on file? If the employer hadn't submitted the W-2 yet, I would think they might just be waiting for verification rather than putting a hold on it...

Thanks for explaining. Makes sense now. Hate when employers are late with this stuff. Affects our money directly.

Oh my goodness, I feel your pain with this whole situation! When I saw your post, I immediately thought about how frustrating it must be to have your refund held up because of something completely out of your control. The waiting game with the IRS is already stressful enough without adding employer delays into the mix! I truly hope this resolves quickly for you once their systems update with your employer's information.

I wonder if this is different for gig workers compared to traditional W-2 employees? Like, does the IRS handle 1099s differently than W-2s when there's a delay in reporting from the employer/client side? My situation is similar to the original poster but with mostly contract work.

I've seen this exact situation before with late W-2 submissions. Back in 2022, my employer didn't submit until March and I got the same 570 code. Last year, I had a client who delayed submitting 1099 information and again, same issue. The IRS basically puts your return on hold when they can't verify the income you reported. In my experience, once the employer information is in their system, it usually resolves within 2-3 weeks. The frustrating part is that there's no notification - you just have to keep checking your transcript. The system is broken and puts the burden on us even though it's the employer's fault.

I went through this exact situation last tax season! My employer didn't submit my W-2 information until mid-March even though I filed in early February. My transcript showed code 570 for about three weeks, and then suddenly updated with code 571 (which means the hold was released). I received my refund about 5 days after that. It was super stressful because I was counting on that money for some car repairs. What helped me was checking my transcript every few days rather than obsessing daily - made the waiting period a little less anxiety-inducing. The good news is that once your employer's information is in the system, things usually move pretty quickly.

Dealing with the IRS when you have a 570 code is like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded. You know there's an exit somewhere, but good luck finding it without help! When I faced this last year, calling the IRS directly was like trying to win the lottery - nearly impossible to get through. I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get past the busy signals and actually reach an agent. It was like having a secret passage through the maze - the agent confirmed my employer's late submission was exactly the issue and gave me a timeline for resolution. Sometimes you need the right tools to solve a problem, and waiting on hold for hours isn't a practical approach when you're worried about your money.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6.4.35.2, code 570 indicates a freeze on your account pending review. Per IRS Publication 5344, when a tax return is processed with income that cannot be verified against Information Return Processing (IRP) data, a hold is systematically applied. Since your employer has just submitted the W-2 information, IRS systems will require approximately 7-14 business days to integrate this data into the Master File system. Once verification occurs, you should see code 571 appear, indicating the release of the freeze condition. The IRS is legally required under IRC ยง6402 to verify income claims before issuing refunds exceeding certain thresholds. For multiple income sources including gig work, verification delays are statistically more common, affecting approximately 23% of such returns in the current processing year.

This is incredibly helpful information! I've been searching through the IRS website trying to understand these codes, but couldn't find this level of detail. Knowing the specific timeline expectations based on the actual IRM makes waiting a bit easier.

Would this 7-14 day timeline still apply if the W-2 was submitted electronically? My employer said they submitted electronically exactly 9 days ago, but I'm still showing code 570 with no update. I've calculated that I'm owed $3,782 and need to make a decision about a payment by next Tuesday.

Here's what you need to do step by step: 1. First, check your transcript again in about 5-7 days to see if code 571 appears (that means the hold is released) 2. If you don't see code 571 within 10 days, try calling the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 3. Before calling, prepare by having your tax return, transcript, and ID ready 4. If you still don't see movement after 21 days from your original filing date, you might want to file Form 911 (Taxpayer Advocate Service request) I'm a bit worried about my own return too - I'm in a similar situation but with a different code. The waiting is the hardest part, especially when you've planned for that money to arrive by a certain date.
