IRS Verification of Non-Filing Letter for 2022 Taxes - What Does This Mean and Did Someone Request This About Me?
I got this letter from the IRS today and honestly im so done with this whole process. They keep sending me different letters with different numbers and codes, and I have no idea what any of it means. This latest one is from the "Internal Revenue Service, United States Department of the Treasury, MEMPHIS, TN 37501-1498" with a Tracking ID number and dated 06-18-2023. It's about my 2022 Form 1040. The letter says "Information About the Request We Received" and then states "On June 15, 2023, we received a request for verification of non-filing of a tax return." Then it says "As of the date of this letter, we have no record of a processed tax return for the tax period listed above." At the bottom it just says "If you have any questions, you can call 800-829-1040" and some website "sa.www4.irs.gov" Is anyone else getting totally overwhelmed by all this? It's like they want us to be tax experts just to file our returns. What does "verification of non-filing" even mean? Did someone request this about me? I thought I filed my 2022 taxes! Do I need to refile or something? Why would they send me this?

Without seeing the actual letter its hard to give specific advice, but if you share the notice number (usually in top right corner) or describe what the letter is about, we can help point you in the right direction.

Hey there! Instead of trying to decode these confusing letters yourself, you should check out taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your transcripts and tells you exactly whats going on in plain english. Costs like $5 but saved me hours of headache. https://taxr.ai

A "verification of non-filing" letter means someone (likely a lender, school, or government agency) requested proof from the IRS that you didn't file a tax return for 2022. The IRS is basically saying "we have no record of this person filing for 2022" which could mean either you didn't file, or your return is still processing and not in their system yet. If you DID file your 2022 taxes, you should call that 800 number ASAP with your filing records to get this sorted out. This isn't something to ignore if you actually filed!
