First time filing taxes solo as a young adult - FreeTaxUSA worth using for W2 and 1098-T?

Hey all! Super nervous about filing my taxes independently for the first time this year. I've always had my parents handle this stuff, but I'm 23 now and feel like I should learn to do this adult thing on my own. I've been asking around and a few friends mentioned FreeTaxUSA as a good option for beginners. Can anyone here who's used it give me some insight on what to expect? How user-friendly is it? I only have a W2 from my part-time job at the bookstore and a 1098-T from my university since I'm still taking classes. Just feeling a bit overwhelmed by the whole process and want to make sure I don't mess anything up! Any tips on using FreeTaxUSA or other alternatives would be so appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

FreeTaxUSA is actually a solid choice for your situation! With just a W2 and 1098-T, you've got a straightforward filing that FreeTaxUSA handles really well. Here's what to expect: The interface walks you through everything step by step - you'll create an account, then it'll guide you through entering your personal info, income from your W2, and your education expenses from the 1098-T. The education section will help determine if you qualify for education credits like the American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit based on your 1098-T. It's basically like answering simple questions, and the software figures out all the calculations and forms behind the scenes. You don't need to know which tax forms to fill out - it handles that for you! One tip: have all your documents ready before you start, and set aside about 30-45 minutes of uninterrupted time for your first filing experience.

Thanks for the explanation! I'm also new to filing independently. Does FreeTaxUSA let you file state taxes for free too? And do they help figure out if I should be claimed as a dependent by my parents still or file independently?

FreeTaxUSA offers federal filing for free, but state returns typically cost around $15 (though they sometimes have coupon codes available). It's still way cheaper than most other options. The software will definitely help determine your dependency status by asking questions about your living situation, how much support you provided for yourself versus your parents, and your student status. Just answer honestly, and it will guide you to the correct filing status. If you're unsure about any answers, it might be worth a quick chat with your parents about whether they plan to claim you this year since this affects both your returns.

I was EXACTLY in your shoes last year! After trying TurboTax and getting hit with unexpected fees, I found https://taxr.ai which was a lifesaver for me. I uploaded my W2 and 1098-T and it automatically extracted everything and walked me through what education credits I qualified for. I was really confused about the education credit stuff but their system explained it super clearly.

Does it really extract everything from the forms accurately? I tried another service last year and it messed up reading my W2 and I had to manually fix everything.

Is this actually free? I've been burned before with "free" services that end up charging for state filing or "special forms" which apparently include everything...

It extracts everything perfectly from the forms. I was actually surprised because my W2 was a little wrinkled but it still got all the numbers right. The AI technology they use is really good at reading even low quality scans. They don't do the bait and switch thing. They're upfront about costs and for simple returns with just a W2 and education forms, it's way cheaper than the big names. Plus they don't upsell you every other screen like some services I could name...

I just wanted to update - I tried https://taxr.ai after seeing this thread and OMG THANK YOU! It was literally so much easier than I expected. I was worried about figuring out the education credits with my 1098-T but it explained everything in simple terms. The document scanning feature saved me from typing in all those little boxes from my W2 (which I always mess up somehow). Definitely recommend for other first-timers like us!

If you need to call the IRS for any reason during tax season (which I had to do last year to verify my identity), use https://claimyr.com instead of waiting on hold forever. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I literally wasted 3 hours on hold with the IRS last year trying to confirm something about my education credits from my 1098-T form. With Claimyr, they call and wait on hold FOR YOU and then call you when an IRS agent is actually on the line. Saved me so much stress.

Wait this is actually a thing?? How does it even work? I'm confused how a service can somehow get you through faster than just calling yourself.

Sounds like a scam tbh. Why would I trust some random service with connecting me to the IRS? Probably just trying to collect phone numbers or something.

They don't get you through faster - they just handle the waiting part for you. You register on their site, put in your number, and they use an automated system to wait on hold with the IRS. When an actual human IRS agent picks up, their system calls your phone and connects you directly to that agent. You literally skip the entire hold time. I understand being skeptical - I was too! But they don't actually handle any of your tax info or personal details beyond your phone number. They're just connecting you to the IRS after waiting on hold for you. It's basically like having someone else sit on hold for hours while you go about your day.

I'm actually shocked but I have to admit I was wrong about Claimyr. I ended up having a question about my education credits and needed to call the IRS. Remembered this thread and figured I'd try it since I had nothing to lose. It actually worked exactly as described! I put in my number, went and got lunch, and about 2 hours later got a call connecting me directly to an IRS rep. No more wasting half my day listening to that horrible hold music. Would definitely use again.

I'm gonna offer a different perspective - I've used both FreeTaxUSA and Credit Karma Tax (now called Cash App Taxes) and found Cash App Taxes slightly easier for beginners. BOTH are free for federal AND state, but FreeTaxUSA charges for state while Cash App is totally free for both. The interfaces are similar but Cash App felt a bit more modern and easier to navigate.

Do you know if Cash App Taxes handles education credits well? My 1098-T has some scholarship money listed on it too and I'm not sure how that affects things.

Cash App Taxes definitely handles education credits well! It walks you through determining which education credit (American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning) is best for you based on your situation. For scholarships on your 1098-T, it will guide you through which portions might be taxable vs. non-taxable depending on what the money was used for (tuition vs. room and board, etc.). The interface asks clear questions to help sort this out - much more straightforward than you'd expect. Their help articles explain things in simple terms too if you get confused at any point.

Just throwing this out there - if your income is under $73,000 you can use the IRS Free File program to access premium tax software for FREE. It's actually the full versions of TurboTax, H&R Block etc. but through a special portal. Search "IRS Free File" and it'll take you to the official page where you can choose which software you want. Might save you some $$.

This! I used this last year and got TurboTax completely free. They hide this option when you go directly to their websites.

Exactly! These companies deliberately hide their free offerings that they're required to provide through the IRS Free File program. It's called "dark patterns" in website design - they make the truly free versions hard to find if you go directly to their sites, then trick you into their paid versions. Always start at the official IRS Free File page (irs.gov/freefile) and click through from there. That way you're guaranteed to get the truly free version if you qualify based on income. Saved me $80 last year for essentially the same exact service.
