First Time Using Drake Tax - Serve Card Refund Timing Question
This is my first year filing with Drake Tax. I got the Serve prepaid card and have fees that will be taken out. Anyone else with Serve, how long did it take you to see your refund once you got a deposit date? My transcripts updated to 3/15 this morning and I saw it said up to 2 days early. Still haven't received my state refund which I usually always get before my federal (when I filed through Liberty Tax) and I saw it said they could take the fees owed out of state refund. But I've been told by others they take it from federal not state so I'm a little confused on that part. My total fees are exactly $189.95 and I need to know which refund they'll come from since I need to budget precisely.

Serve cards aren't great. Fees add up. Deposit timing varies. Some get it same day. Others wait 3-5 days. Depends on bank processing. Your DDD is just an estimate.

According to IRS Publication 1345 (Tax Professional Guidelines), the preparer fees should be clearly disclosed in your service agreement. Did your tax preparer specify which refund would have the fees deducted? The standard practice is to take fees from the first available refund.

I waited 4 DAYS after my DDD for my money to hit my Serve card last year! And then they charged me $4.95 to withdraw at an ATM? What's even the point of using their card if we're just losing more money? Doesn't anyone else think this whole system is designed to take advantage of people who need their refunds quickly?

In my experience with Serve cards specifically, the average wait time is 2.3 days after the DDD. For a 3/15 DDD, you're likely to see it appear on your card between 3/15-3/18. If you received your DDD today, there's a 78% chance you'll see your refund by Monday at the latest, assuming no processing delays.

Did they give you any paperwork explaining the fees? I'm wondering if there's a breakdown somewhere that shows exactly when they take the money out? I had the same issue last year and was so confused until I found the fine print.

It appears that you might be experiencing the somewhat confusing fee structure that is often associated with tax preparation services. Perhaps you could check your tax preparation agreement? It should, in theory, specify whether the fees are deducted from your federal or state refund. In most cases, they typically take fees from whichever refund processes first, although this can vary depending on the specific terms you agreed to.

What's your SBBT (Santa Barbara Tax Products Group) reference number? This is usually provided on your receipt and can be used to track the status of your refund through their system before it hits your Serve card.

Really appreciate this detailed explanation! The distinction between federal and state fee deductions has been confusing me too.

I would caution against making assumptions about which refund the fees come from. Each tax preparation service structures their fee arrangements differently, and without seeing the actual contract, it's difficult to provide definitive guidance.

I had a similar issue with my prepaid card last year. So frustrating trying to figure out when money would arrive! • Called IRS 14 times over 3 days • Waited on hold for 45+ minutes each time • Most calls disconnected before reaching anyone • Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through in about 18 minutes • Agent confirmed exactly when my refund would hit my card • They explained which refund would have fees taken out Saved me days of stress and uncertainty. The IRS agent was actually super helpful once I could reach one!

These services just want more money. IRS is free if you're patient. Why pay more fees on top of prep fees?

While I understand the skepticism, there might actually be some value in a service that connects you directly to an IRS representative, particularly during this busy tax season when hold times can exceed several hours. The peace of mind from getting official information could potentially be worth it for some individuals.

I've tried both waiting on the IRS line myself (4.5 hours last time) and using Claimyr (got through in 22 minutes). When you're anxious about your refund timing, especially with bills due, the time saved can be worth it compared to using vacation days just to sit on hold.

I used Drake Tax with Serve last year and Liberty Tax the year before. With Drake+Serve, my refund hit exactly 28 hours after my DDD appeared on my transcript. Far better than Liberty Tax which took 4 days after DDD! For the fees, Drake took them from my federal refund even though my state came first. Their system is set up differently than TurboTax or H&R Block which can pull from either refund. The timing this year seems faster overall compared to last year's processing delays.

Did you have any issues with the Serve card after receiving your refund? I've heard they sometimes freeze accounts for "verification" which delays access to funds.

WOW! I had NO IDEA the different tax services handled this differently! That explains so much about why my experience this year is nothing like last year! Why don't they explain this clearly when you sign up??

Have you checked if your state refund is being offset for any reason? This happens frequently when there are: 1. Outstanding state debts 2. Child support obligations 3. Municipal court fees I ask because the timing seems unusual. When did you file exactly? And did you receive any notices from your state tax authority?

Good point. State offsets are common. OP should check state website. Could explain the delay.

It might also be worth noting that some states are experiencing somewhat longer processing times this year, particularly for returns filed in February. The state processing systems are generally not quite as efficient as the federal systems.

I'm wondering this too! My state refund was delayed because: • I had an old parking ticket I forgot about • They took the $75 plus a $15 processing fee • Never got any notification until I called • Had to wait 3 extra weeks for the remainder

omg I'm literally in the EXACT same situation rn! First time w/ Drake + Serve card. Filed on 2/14, got my DDD of 3/15 this morning, and still waiting on state (filed in CA). My state was supposed to be here by 3/1 according to the estimate! I called Drake customer service yesterday and they said: 1) Fed refund should hit Serve card within 24-48hrs of DDD 2) They take the fees from federal ONLY 3) State refunds are taking longer this yr bc of increased fraud checks Hope this helps! Lmk when ur $ hits the card so I can compare!

Drake told me different info. Said fees can come from either refund. Depends on which processes first. Check your contract.

It's possible that different Drake offices might have somewhat different policies, especially if they're franchised locations. The main company guidelines could be implemented slightly differently by individual preparers.

This is really helpful info! Thank you for sharing what they told you directly. • Makes me feel better about my state delay • Good to know about the fee structure • 24-48 hours seems reasonable for the card deposit

My experience was similar to what they told you. Fees came from federal only, and my state refund arrived completely separate with no deductions. Drake seems more consistent with this approach than H&R Block, which took fees from my state refund last year since it arrived first.

Have you considered just using direct deposit to your bank account next year instead of the Serve card? I used to use those prepaid cards but the fees were ridiculous and timing was always a mystery. Most tax software now lets you pay the preparation fees separately (credit card, debit, or even from next year's refund) without requiring the prepaid card option. Might save you both money and stress for next tax season!
