Finally resolved after 11 weeks - Recovery Rebate error on line 30

Hey guys, after 11 excruciating weeks I finally called the IRS and found out what was holding up my refund. It was a stupid error on my taxes - line 30 specifically. My preparer requested the Child Tax Credit which I had already received in advance payments last year. So May 15th date it is folks! Yippppeee 🎉

This is unfortunately a very common error for the 2023 tax year. Line 30 errors related to tax credits are one of the top reasons for processing delays. The IRS has to manually verify when there's a discrepancy between what was claimed and what their records show was already disbursed. Glad you finally got resolution!

I had the EXACT same issue last month! My preparer claimed the full CTC when I'd already received half in advance payments. Took me forever to figure out why my refund was delayed. I finally used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript - it immediately spotted the line 30 discrepancy and explained that's why I was getting the 570/971 codes. Saved me weeks of wondering what was happening.

Is that site legit? Never heard of it before. Why would you need a third party site when you can just call the IRS directly like OP did?

Totally get the skepticism! But have you tried calling the IRS lately? I spent 3 days trying before I gave up. The site just scans your transcript and explains what each code means for YOUR specific situation. Saved me hours of research trying to decode IRS language. Plus it predicted my exact DDD which was spot on.

How long did they say it'll take to process after they fixed the error? I'm stuck in the same boat right now - preparer claimed a credit I wasn't eligible for.

They said 2-3 weeks from when they make the adjustment. So hopefully by mid-May I'll have my money. It's ridiculous it takes so long for them to fix a simple error!

Pro tip for anyone else dealing with this: I was in the same situation last month and wasted DAYS trying to reach someone at the IRS. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. They fixed my line 30 error on the spot and I had my refund 2 weeks later. Worth every penny to not deal with the constant busy signals and disconnects.

Did they charge you for this? I've been trying to call for over a week now with no luck.

Yes, there is a fee, but considering I was about to take time off work just to spend all day calling the IRS, it was absolutely worth it. They only charge if they connect you, and I got through in minutes instead of days of trying.

Always double-check what tax credits you've already received before filing. The IRS doesn't have an automated system to catch these discrepancies before accepting your return, which is why they cause such long delays. Your tax preparer should have asked you about advance payments.
