Filed 2/7, Transcript Still Shows N/A After 31 Days - IRS Blames Volume?
I filed on February 7th and my transcript still shows N/A with zero updates. Today marks 31 days in tax purgatory. Called the IRS (miracle of miracles) and the agent basically said "it's not you, it's us" - claiming the delay is due to high volume of filers this year. Not sure if that's a legitimate explanation or the tax equivalent of "the check is in the mail." Has anyone else experienced this transcript limbo? Starting to wonder if my return is sitting on someone's desk being used as a coffee coaster...

This happens every year, but 2024 seems particularly backed up. Last year I filed around the same time and had a similar experience - transcript showed N/A for about 35 days before suddenly updating. The IRS systems are notoriously outdated and their processing pipeline can't handle the volume efficiently. When they say "high volume" they're not lying, but it's also their standard explanation for almost everything. As long as you have your confirmation that the return was accepted, you're likely fine. The good news is that once it finally processes, you'll probably get interest added if it's been more than 45 days from filing.

A few questions that might help identify what's happening: 1. Did you e-file or paper file? 2. Did you claim any credits like Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit? 3. Have you checked Where's My Refund tool, and if so, what does it show? 4. Are you expecting a large refund? The answers to these can help determine if you're just in the normal (though frustrating) processing queue or if there might be something else going on.

Not OP but this is super helpful - I'm on day 27 exactly and was wondering the same things. I'll be checking for exactly these factors on my return.

OMG thank you for asking these questions! I e-filed through TurboTax and got the acceptance confirmation right away. I claimed the Child Tax Credit for my 8-year-old. WMR just shows the first bar with "Return Received" and hasn't moved AT ALL. My refund is about $4,200 which I'm DESPERATELY waiting for to pay for some unexpected home repairs. Every morning I wake up and check my transcript hoping for ANY movement. This waiting is making me lose my mind!!!

This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr last year when I was in a similar situation. I spent days trying to get through to the IRS on my own - constant busy signals or disconnects after waiting on hold for an hour. Compared to other tax situations I've dealt with, this was particularly frustrating. Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 25 minutes when I'd been trying unsuccessfully for days. The agent confirmed my return was just stuck in processing and released it that day. Not saying it always works that perfectly, but it was worth it for the peace of mind.

Did the IRS agent give you any indication of how much longer it might take? I'm in a similar boat and need to know if I should adjust my financial plans for the next few weeks.

Same thing happened to me. Filed 2/5. Transcript showed N/A for 34 days. Was going crazy checking. Then it suddenly updated yesterday. No explanation. No letter. Nothing wrong with my return. Just slow processing. Refund scheduled for next week. Hang in there.

This delay is likely due to several factors: ā¢ Child Tax Credit claims trigger additional verification ā¢ IRS is prioritizing certain returns (typically lower income/simpler returns first) ā¢ System backlogs from the Feb 12-15 surge period ā¢ Staffing issues at processing centers Based on this tax season's patterns, most returns with similar characteristics are updating between 28-42 days after filing. The transcript typically updates overnight Thursday-Friday or Friday-Saturday.

Is there any truth to the rumor that returns claiming exact round numbers (like $2,000 exactly) get flagged for additional review? I've heard this causes delays but never seen official confirmation.

Wait, so you're saying Thursday-Friday is the magic update window? I've been obsessively checking my transcript every morning at 6am... maybe I should set an alarm for midnight Thursday instead? š The waiting is killing me too!

This breakdown is super helpful, thank you. I'm in a similar boat with a CTC claim and it's day 29 for me. According to IRM 21.4.1.3, they're supposed to process within 21 days but obviously that's not happening for many of us this year.

FYI - the N/A transcript doesn't mean they haven't received ur return. It means they haven't processed it yet. There's a diff. The return is in the system (confirmed by ur acceptance and WMR first bar) but hasn't been assigned to processing queue yet. This is happening to TONS of ppl this yr. The cycle codes show most CTC returns are now processing in cycle 20240805 thru 20240807 which means late March/early April deposit dates.
