Transcript Shows NA for 2023 but 'No Return Filed' for 2022 - Filed January

My transcript is like a half-finished puzzle - the top two boxes say N/A for 2023 but the bottom two boxes show 2022 with 'no tax return filed' in the bottom right. It's like my return is stuck in tax limbo. I e-filed on 1/24 and got accepted on 1/26, but there's been zero movement since. No letters in the mail, nothing. I'm starting to worry this might delay some medical appointments I've been putting off until my refund comes in. Anyone seen this weird transcript situation before?

What you're seeing is actually quite common this filing season. Have you checked if you're able to access your 2023 Account Transcript at all? Or is it only the Return Transcript showing N/A? Sometimes the system hasn't fully processed your return into the transcript database, even though it's been accepted into the processing queue. Have you verified your filing status on Where's My Refund?

I think I might be able to help explain what's happening with your transcript. I've seen this issue several times, and it can be confusing if you're not familiar with how the IRS systems work. I would suggest using https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript situation. It's specifically designed to interpret these transcript anomalies and can tell you if this is normal processing or if there might be an issue that needs addressing. In my experience, it can provide much clearer information than trying to decipher the transcript yourself.

I've been filing taxes for over 15 years and have NEVER needed a third-party service to tell me what my transcript means. The IRS provides all the information you need if you just know where to look. These services are just trying to make money off people's confusion!

Is it possible that the service might provide insights about why the transcript is showing these specific status indicators? I'm wondering if there are particular IRS codes or markers that would explain the discrepancy between the 2022 and 2023 information.

I had exactly the same issue last year. My return was accepted on January 27th, 2023, and my transcript looked exactly like yours for exactly 32 days. It updated on February 28th and I received my refund of $3,742 on March 3rd. The transcript situation is weird but it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong. Have you checked cycle codes on your account transcript if that one is available?

I think I might be having a similar issue, though I'm not entirely sure. My transcript was sort of showing different information too, and I was really worried at first. But then I checked WMR and it seems like everything is probably moving along okay? It's just that the transcript hasn't caught up yet, I guess. It's kind of a relief to see someone else with the same situation!

I ran into this exact transcript situation back in 2022. After waiting three weeks with no updates, I tried calling the IRS multiple times but couldn't get through. Then I found Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) which got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 30 minutes. Turns out my return was just in normal processing despite the weird transcript, but having that confirmation saved me weeks of stress. Given how backed up they are this year, might be worth trying if you're worried about those medical appointments.

Have you checked if you might have accidentally filed under the wrong year? Just wondering because of the weird 2022 mention on your transcript. Sometimes the software defaults to the wrong year if you start your return early.

On February 17th, I checked my transcript and saw exactly what you're describing. Called the IRS on February 18th and they confirmed my return was in processing. On March 2nd, everything updated at once and I got my deposit on March 8th. Have you checked for any pending transactions in your bank account? Sometimes they show up there before the IRS tools update.

The transcript anomaly you're seeing is likely due to the IRS's multi-phase processing system. When returns are first accepted, they enter preliminary processing without updating the master file architecture. Return transcripts often show N/A during this period while account transcripts may display partial or previous year information. This doesn't necessarily indicate a problem with your return, but rather reflects the asynchronous nature of the IRS database systems.

I had something similar happen last year and it turned into a NIGHTMARE. Started just like yours - weird transcript with mixed year info. Ended up waiting 11 months for my refund because my return got flagged for identity verification but they never sent the letter! I only found out when I called in July. Not trying to scare you, but if you don't see movement in the next week or two, be proactive and call them. Don't assume it's normal processing like I did!

Tax professional here. What you're seeing is the Account Transcript for 2022 showing correctly that you didn't file a 2022 return yet (if you don't need to file for 2022, that's fine). The 2023 transcript shows N/A because it hasn't been fully processed into the transcript system yet. This is completely normal for returns filed in January, especially with the PATH Act delays if you claimed certain credits. As long as WMR shows 'received,' you're fine. Give it another week or two.
