Filed 02/02 with Cycle Code 05 - Still Not Processed After 53 Days

I e-filed exactly 53 days ago on February 2nd and my return still shows as 'not processed' in the system. I checked my transcript and noticed I have cycle code 05. From what I understand, cycle code 05 USUALLY updates on Thursdays, but I've gone through 7 Thursday cycles with no movement. This is my first filing season after finalizing my divorce in December, so I'm really counting on this refund. Any insight on when I might see an update would be so appreciated!

Cycle code 05 is typically a weekly processing code, but this tax season has been much slower than previous years. I've seen returns with 05 codes take up to 60 days compared to the usual 21 days we saw last year. Your situation isn't unusual for 2024 processing - returns with status changes (like filing single after being married) often get flagged for additional verification, which doesn't mean there's a problem, just extra steps.

Have you checked your transcript for specific codes that might explain the delay? Many people don't realize that those codes tell a detailed story about what's happening with your return. I was in a similar holding pattern and used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript - it translated all the IRS jargon and explained exactly why my return was delayed and when I could expect movement. Have you considered that your recent divorce might have triggered additional verification steps that aren't immediately obvious from the standard IRS tools?

This processing delay epidemic is getting ridiculous, isn't it? 😂 Not to be that person, but after waiting 6 weeks with no updates, I bit the bullet and used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to actually get a human on the phone. Saved me from the IRS hold music hell. Got through in about 30 minutes when I'd spent literal days trying before. The agent confirmed my return was just stuck in a verification queue - nothing wrong, just bureaucracy. Not saying it's the only solution, but when you need answers and not more waiting...

Did you claim any credits like the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit? Those automatically add processing time.

Correct. PATH Act verification applies to returns with EITC or ACTC. This creates mandatory holding periods before refunds can be issued. Cycle code 05 indicates Thursday updates, but verification requirements can override normal cycle patterns. Recent divorce status changes frequently trigger additional review protocols.

I'm going through something similar with my return. Do you know if having a change in dependents from last year would cause the same kind of delay? I'm trying to budget for next month and not sure if I should count on this refund or not.

Watch out for the verification letter trap! My return sat for 45 days before I got a letter asking to verify my identity. The frustrating part? They never updated the online status to tell me they needed anything. I only found out when the letter arrived. You might want to check if anything was mailed to you?

According to the IRS operations page (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations), they're still working through a backlog from previous years while processing current returns. The community consensus is that cycle code 05 returns are updating on Thursdays, but not necessarily every Thursday. If you check the IRS2Go app on Thursday nights between 12am-3am, that's when most people report seeing updates.

This is so true! Last year after my separation (before the divorce was finalized), my return took 59 days exactly. I tracked every detail in a spreadsheet. I had cycle code 05 too, and it updated on the 8th Thursday after filing - no movement for 7 weeks straight, then suddenly processed. The refund hit my account 6 days later. Hang in there!

Did you have to call them at all during that wait? I'm wondering if calling actually helps or just wastes time when the system is already processing.

Just got my refund today. Filed January 28. Cycle code 05. Took exactly 62 days. No explanation. No special codes. Just suddenly processed. Yours might be close too.
