Direct Deposit Date Today But No Refund - IRS Processing Changes in 2024?

According to IRS Publication 2043 and Treasury Regulation 301.6402-2, direct deposits should be processed within 24 hours of the scheduled deposit date. I'm concerned because my transcript shows today (April 17, 2024) as my direct deposit date, but unlike previous years when I would receive funds 2 days prior to the scheduled date, I still haven't received anything. I've verified all my banking information is correct per Form 8888 instructions. Has the IRS modified their ACH processing protocols for the 2024 filing season? I'm seeing reports that many refunds are being deposited later in the day around 2pm rather than the typical overnight processing. Is anyone else experiencing these timing changes? I'm trying to understand if this is a systemic change or if I should be concerned about my specific refund.

Yep, this year's different. The IRS has been batching refunds differently - it's their new "streamlined processing system" (aka they broke something and won't admit it šŸ˜‚). Lots of folks are getting deposits exactly ON their DDD rather than 1-2 days early like previous years. And yeah, many banks are showing deposits hitting in the afternoon rather than overnight processing. Nothing to worry about unless it's been more than 24 hours after your DDD. The early deposits were actually never guaranteed - that was just banks being nice and fronting the money when they saw the pending ACH from Treasury.

I'm experiencing this exact same issue, I think. My refund was supposed to be deposited yesterday, and I'm still waiting. I've probably checked my bank account about twenty times today. It's somewhat reassuring to hear this might be normal for this year, though I'm still a bit concerned.

Are you seeing a pending transaction in your financial institution's ACH processing queue? The Treasury Fiscal Service (TFS) implemented new Automated Clearing House (ACH) protocols this filing season that have modified the transmission window for batch processing. Have you verified your transcript shows TC846 with today's date and the correct account number truncation?

This happened to my brother last week! He was freaking out because his deposit date came and went with nothing in his account. Then around 3pm it suddenly appeared. I think the IRS is definitely doing something different with their processing this year compared to previous tax seasons.

I'm in the same boat... my deposit date is today and nothing's shown up yet. I'm trying not to stress since I need this money for some bills due soon. I've been using https://taxr.ai to monitor my transcript the past few weeks. It helped me understand all those mysterious codes and actually predicted my DDD correctly when the WMR tool was still showing processing. The site also mentioned that 2024 refunds are following a different deposit pattern than previous years - many hitting exactly on the DDD rather than early. Might be worth checking if you haven't already.

I had the exact same experience last week. My DDD was April 10th, and in previous years (specifically 2022 and 2023), I would receive my deposit 1-2 days early. This year, it didn't post until 2:37pm on April 10th - exactly on my deposit date. I called my bank on April 9th when I didn't see the early deposit, and they confirmed they had no pending ACH from Treasury. So it seems the IRS has definitely changed something in their processing timeline this year. The representative mentioned they've been seeing this pattern with all tax refunds since February 2024.

Thanks for sharing this specific timeline. It's helpful to know that even with the delay, you still received it on the actual deposit date. I'll stop refreshing my bank app every 5 minutes and just check again later this afternoon.

Oh thank goodness I found this thread! I was about to call the IRS thinking something went wrong with my banking info. It's like waiting for a package that says "out for delivery" but never arrives - except it's my money! Glad to hear it should still come today.

I went through this exact situation last month. My refund was showing a deposit date of March 13th, but unlike previous years when I'd get it early, nothing showed up until late afternoon on the actual date. I was in a similar situation where I needed the money for some bills. When I couldn't get through to the IRS on their regular number (tried for 2 hours!), I used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to connect with an agent. They confirmed there's been a change in how the Treasury Department is processing ACH payments this year. The agent explained that many financial institutions are receiving the deposits in afternoon batches rather than overnight processing. Saved me hours of stress and redial attempts.

According to the IRS.gov website updates and several tax professional forums I follow, there has been a shift in the Treasury Department's ACH processing schedule for 2024. The official IRS refund status page (https://www.irs.gov/refunds) doesn't explicitly mention the timing changes, but many tax professionals have noted the pattern. You might want to check if your bank has a specific posting schedule for ACH transactions. Some financial institutions only post ACH transactions at certain times during the business day, regardless of when they receive them from the Treasury. This could also explain why you're seeing a later-in-the-day deposit pattern. I'm concerned this might affect a lot of taxpayers who are counting on early deposits based on previous years' experiences.

Do you know if this affects all banks? Or just certain ones? My credit union usually posts deposits as soon as they receive them.

I'm so worried about this! My mortgage payment is due tomorrow and I was counting on getting my refund early like last year. I wish the IRS would clearly communicate these changes instead of leaving everyone confused and anxious about their money!

Could this be related to the IRS's new processing systems that were implemented for the 2024 filing season? I received my refund exactly at 2:13pm on my DDD, which was April 3rd. Before that, I kept thinking - did I enter the wrong account number? Was my return flagged for review? Why isn't it processing like previous years? The interesting technical detail is that when I called my bank, they said they could see the ACH was initiated that same morning around 9am, not the day before like in previous years. This suggests the Treasury is sending the files to the Federal Reserve for processing on the actual DDD morning rather than 1-2 days earlier as they used to do.

WARNING ABOUT 2024 REFUND TIMING: ā€¢ IRS has changed their ACH processing schedule ā€¢ Many banks NO LONGER receiving deposits 1-2 days early ā€¢ Most refunds now arriving ON the DDD, often afternoon ā€¢ This is causing overdrafts for people who scheduled payments expecting early deposits ā€¢ If your DDD is TODAY, don't panic until after 5pm ā€¢ If your DDD was YESTERDAY or earlier, call the IRS immediately I learned this the hard way on April 2nd when my scheduled payments hit before my refund arrived. Had to scramble to transfer emergency funds to avoid fees!

I just went through this exact scenario last week! My deposit date was April 10th, and like you, I've always received my refunds 1-2 days early in previous years. This year it showed up at 3:45pm on the exact deposit date. Did you by chance file using a different software this year? Or claim any different credits? I'm curious if there's a pattern to who's experiencing these timing changes.
