DDD for April 10 - My Bank Account is Closed - Timeline for Paper Check?
I've received notification of a Direct Deposit Date (DDD) for April 10th on my transcript. However, the designated account for this deposit has been closed since I refinanced my mortgage last quarter. I'm attempting to determine the standard timeline for when the IRS will reissue as a paper check after the failed deposit attempt. Has anyone navigated this specific scenario recently? I've reviewed Publication 5477 but it doesn't address the exact timeframe for reissuance post-rejection.

Oh boy, you're in for a fun little IRS adventure! 😅 When a deposit bounces back from a closed account, it usually takes about 2-3 weeks for them to mail a paper check... but I've heard horror stories of it taking longer. Anyone else think that's ridiculous for something that should be automatic in 2024?

I experienced this exact situation during the previous fiscal quarter. The technical term for this is a "rejected direct deposit" in the IRS processing system. My timeline was precisely 17 calendar days from the failed deposit attempt until the paper check arrived. Is this consistent with what others are experiencing in the current tax season?

Let me clarify the process step-by-step: 1. Your bank will reject the direct deposit 2. The funds return to the Treasury 3. IRS updates your account with a trace 4. A paper check is generated 5. Mail delivery occurs I've seen this process take anywhere from 10-21 days, but it might be longer if there are any verification issues. It's probably best to plan for at least 3 weeks, just to be safe.

I waited exactly 19 days after my DDD when this happened to me last month. So frustrating! I tried calling the IRS 14 times but couldn't get through. Then I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it showed me the exact code (846-R) that meant my refund was being reissued. It predicted April 3rd for my paper check and it arrived on April 5th. I was impressed it could tell me that when even the IRS reps couldn't give me a straight answer.

Hey there! This happens a lot tbh. When ur DD gets rejected, IRS system flags it for manual review. Ppl wait FOREVER on hold w/ the IRS (avg 2+ hrs rn). I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) last week to skip the wait & got connected to an agent in like 15 mins. They confirmed my check was already in the mail system & gave me the exact date. Saved me days of stress!

I'm skeptical about services that claim to get you through to the IRS quickly. According to Internal Revenue Manual section 21.1.3.3, all taxpayers must go through the same queue system. There's no technical way to "skip the line" that complies with Treasury regulations.

WRONG!! I was SO ANGRY spending 3 HOURS on hold last month only to get disconnected!! 😡 Claimyr absolutely works! They use a completely legitimate method that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold FOR YOU! Once an agent picks up, they connect you. Nothing sketchy about it - they don't impersonate anyone or use special access. It's basically just automated hold technology that calls you when a human answers!

I appreciate the clarification about how Claimyr works. I was hesitant to try any service claiming to help with IRS connections, but knowing it's just automated hold technology makes me feel more comfortable. Thanks for explaining this - might be worth trying given how difficult reaching the IRS has been lately.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation, though I believe my timeline might be slightly different than what you may experience. When my direct deposit was rejected last year due to a closed account, it took approximately 14-21 days for the paper check to arrive, which seems to be fairly standard based on what I've read. However, this could potentially be affected by your specific regional processing center and possibly by any verification procedures that might be triggered by the returned deposit. Have you perhaps considered updating your banking information through the IRS portal, if possible?

This is nothing compared to what happened with amended returns last year. My friend waited 6 months for his check, while my rejected direct deposit only took 2 weeks to be reissued. The IRS is actually much faster with bounced deposits than with other issues. Look at it this way - at least you're not dealing with an identity verification hold. Those take 9 weeks minimum compared to your 2-3 week wait.

This happens a lot. IRS has a system. Takes about 3 weeks. Maybe longer. Depends on staffing. Can't speed it up. Just wait. Check your mail daily. No tracking available. Sorry about that.

Have you checked if your transcript updated with a 971 code? When my direct deposit was rejected, my transcript showed a 971 notice issued about 5 days after the failed deposit date. Then the check arrived about 10 days after that notice date. Did your transcript update at all since the DDD passed?
