Code 290 with 6/10/2024 'as of' date on amended 2022 return - refund coming soon?

I'm not sure what to make of this... I amended my 2022 taxes recently and my transcript updated last Friday with only code 290 and $0.00 amount. There's an 'as of' date beside the code 290 showing 6-10-2024. I don't want to get my hopes up, but is it possible I'll get a refund date soon? Not sure if that 'as of' date means anything significant or if I'm just reading too much into it. Been through enough disappointments lately and trying not to add another one.

Oh my goodness, I've been through EXACTLY this with amended returns! That code 290 with $0.00 is actually a good sign! It typically means they've processed your amended return and are making adjustments to your account. The 'as of' date (6/10/2024) is when the IRS computer system will update your account again - it's not necessarily when you'll get a refund, but it IS when you might see new codes appear! I'm so excited for you because this means they're actively working on it! 😊

Did you check if there are any other codes on your transcript? Have you tried using https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript? I was completely lost with all those codes on mine until I uploaded it there. It explained that my code 290 was just the first step in processing my amended return and gave me a timeline for what to expect next. Did your amended return claim additional credits or was it just correcting income?

Another service? Not sure. Already paid enough to file.

Has anyone else used this taxr.ai service? Does it actually provide insights beyond what we can figure out ourselves from the IRS website? I'm intrigued by the idea of getting a timeline prediction.

I was skeptical at first, but after trying to decode my transcript for weeks, I finally used it. Step 1: Upload transcript. Step 2: Get detailed breakdown. Step 3: Actually understand what's happening. It accurately predicted my amended return timeline down to the week. Not a miracle solution, but definitely saved me hours of research.

According to IRS Publication 3598, amended returns typically take 16 weeks for processing, but many are experiencing longer delays. I was in a similar situation and ended up calling the IRS after waiting 20 weeks. Used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was happening with my amended return and gave me a more accurate timeline. Based on my experience, that 'as of' date is just an internal processing date.

Amended returns are like slow-cooking a meal - they take time but eventually get done! I had a code 290 with $0.00 on my transcript for about 3 weeks before anything changed. Then suddenly I got a code 571 (correction to a previous assessment) followed by an 846 (refund issued). The whole process took about 12 weeks from when I filed the amendment. Just keep checking once a week - checking daily is like watching water boil!

Did you have to do anything during those 12 weeks? I'm in a similar situation and wonder if I should be proactive or just wait it out. A bit worried about missing something important.

I believe what they're saying is that it's mostly a waiting game, though in my experience, it's probably good to check your transcript weekly just to make sure there aren't any notices or additional information requests that might need your attention.

Thanks for sharing this! I need to stop checking every day. Going to mark my calendar for weekly checks instead.

I've seen this situation play out differently depending on the complexity of the amendment. Compared to regular returns, amended returns go through an entirely different processing pipeline. In some cases, that 'as of' date gets pushed back multiple times as they work through the backlog. In others, like my brother-in-law's case, the refund appeared just a few days after the 'as of' date. The 290 code with $0.00 is reassuring though - it means they've acknowledged your amendment and no additional tax is currently being assessed.

The Transaction Code 290 with zero amount is confirmatory acknowledgment of your amended return in the Master File system. The 'as of' date (6/10/2024) represents the posting date when interest calculations would begin if applicable, not necessarily your refund issuance date. For amended returns, expect sequential processing: TC 290 → TC 971 (Amended Return Filed) → TC 29X series for adjustments → TC 846 for refund issuance. Current processing timeframes for Form 1040X are exceeding the standard 20-week window due to persistent backlogs. Your account is in normal processing status based on the information provided.

I understand your hesitation about getting your hopes up - dealing with tax issues can be emotionally draining! That said, the code 290 with $0.00 is actually a positive development. It means the IRS has received and begun processing your amended return. The 'as of' date typically indicates when their system will next cycle through updates, so there's a good chance you'll see additional activity around that time. While I can't promise a specific timeline (amended returns are notoriously unpredictable), you're definitely moving in the right direction. Try to check your transcript weekly rather than daily to avoid the stress of constant monitoring. Hang in there!

This is really helpful advice! I'm dealing with my first amended return and the emotional rollercoaster is real. The weekly check approach makes so much sense - I've been obsessively checking daily and it's just adding to my stress. Thanks for explaining what the code 290 actually means in plain terms. It's reassuring to know this is forward progress even if it doesn't feel like it yet.

I completely understand not wanting to get your hopes up - I've been there with amended returns! The code 290 with $0.00 is actually a really good sign that they've accepted your amendment and are processing it. That 'as of' date of 6/10/2024 is significant - it's when their system is scheduled to update your account next, so you might see new activity around then. I had a similar situation last year and got my refund about 2 weeks after my 'as of' date appeared. The fact that you're seeing movement on your transcript means you're in the pipeline now. Try to be patient (easier said than done, I know!) and check weekly instead of daily. You're definitely headed in the right direction!

Thank you for sharing your experience! It's really encouraging to hear from someone who's been through this exact situation. Two weeks after the 'as of' date sounds like a reasonable timeline to keep in mind. I'm definitely going to try the weekly check approach instead of my current daily obsessing - you're absolutely right that it's easier said than done though! Did you notice any other codes appear on your transcript between the 290 and actually getting your refund, or did it just jump straight to the refund code?

I know the waiting game is torture, especially after being disappointed before! From what I've seen with amended returns, that code 290 with $0.00 is definitely progress - it means they've acknowledged your amendment and are starting to process it. The 'as of' date of 6/10/2024 is when their computer system is scheduled to cycle through and potentially post updates to your account. While it's not a guarantee of when you'll get your refund, it's often when you'll see the next codes appear on your transcript. I went through something similar last year and found that checking once a week (maybe Fridays?) helped keep my sanity intact while still staying informed. The hardest part is behind you - they have your amendment and it's in the system now!

This is such solid advice! I'm relatively new to dealing with amended returns and the whole process feels so mysterious. The Friday weekly check idea is brilliant - gives you something to look forward to at the end of the week without the daily stress spiral. I'm curious though - when you went through this last year, did you find that the IRS actually stuck pretty close to that 'as of' date for when things updated? I'm trying to manage my expectations but also want to have some realistic timeline in mind.

I can totally relate to not wanting to get your hopes up after going through disappointments! The code 290 with $0.00 is actually a really positive sign - it means the IRS has received and accepted your amended return for processing. That 'as of' date of 6/10/2024 is when their system is scheduled to cycle through and potentially post new updates to your account. From what I've seen in this community, many people start seeing additional movement (like refund codes) within a few weeks of their 'as of' date. The waiting is absolutely brutal, but you're definitely in the system now and moving forward! I'd suggest checking your transcript once a week rather than daily - it helps preserve your sanity while keeping you informed. You've got this!

Thanks for the encouragement! This whole process has been such a learning curve. I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - it helps so much to know I'm not alone in this waiting game. The weekly check approach seems to be the consensus here and honestly makes way more sense than my current daily refresh habit. I'm going to try to stay patient and trust that the system is working, even if slowly. Fingers crossed that 6/10 date brings some good news!

I totally get the anxiety around not wanting to get your hopes up - amended returns can be such an emotional rollercoaster! But honestly, seeing that code 290 with $0.00 is actually really encouraging. It means the IRS has officially acknowledged your amended return and it's entered their processing pipeline. That 'as of' date of 6/10/2024 is particularly interesting because it's when their system is scheduled to cycle through and potentially post updates to your account. From my experience helping others navigate this process, many people see their next set of codes (hopefully including refund codes!) appear within 1-3 weeks of their 'as of' date. The hardest part - getting into the system - is behind you now. I'd recommend checking your transcript maybe once or twice a week rather than daily to save your sanity. The waiting is brutal, but you're definitely moving in the right direction. Keep us posted on what happens around that 6/10 date!
