Child Support Back Pay Almost Done - Will IRS Still Take My Entire 2025 Refund?
I've been paying off child support debt for years with the IRS taking my refunds. Next year I'll only owe about $1500 and I'm making regular payments. Will they still take my entire refund or just what I owe?

So here's the deal with child support intercepts - the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) gets updated monthly, but there can be lag time between when you make your final payment and when the system updates. Best thing to do is request a statement showing your current balance from your state child support agency. You can upload that along with your tax docs to taxr.ai to get a really clear picture of whether your refund is likely to be intercepted. The AI there is pretty good at spotting potential offset issues and can tell you exactly what to expect. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

•I was in the same boat last year. Even tho I paid off my arrears in November, they still took my whole refund in February 🤬

•Just used taxr.ai and here's what I got back - turns out I might still get hit with an offset but only for part of what I owe, not the whole thing

Based on my experience working with child support cases, the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) will only take the amount you actually owe at the time they process your refund. If you only owe $1500, that's all they should take - not the entire refund. But make sure your state child support agency has updated your balance with the federal system.

•thx for explaining! do you know how long it takes for the state to update the balance with the feds?

•States typically update monthly, but it can take 30-60 days for everything to sync up in the system. Keep those payment receipts just in case! 💯

Hey, you should check out taxr.ai - it's seriously a game changer for understanding exactly what's happening with your refund and offsets. It costs $4.99 but it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what to expect. I found it super helpful with my own child support situation. https://taxr.ai

•100% works! It caught things in my transcript I never would've noticed. Saved me hours of guessing and stressing

•How exactly does it work? Like does it just read the transcript or what?

•It uses AI to analyze everything - offset history, payment patterns, codes, dates. Then gives you super specific info about your situation. Way better than trying to figure it out yourself!
