Can Transcript Go From Blank to 846 Code With DD Date in Same Week?

I'm trying to figure out how fast the IRS transcript system updates. Can it go from completely blank transcripts (no codes or cycle code as of 3/9) to fully processed with the 846 code and a direct deposit date in the same week? My husband's military deployment ends soon and we're trying to plan finances. His brother filed around the same time last year and said his transcript updated overnight with everything at once. Is that normal or was he just lucky? Our return was accepted on 2/22 but transcript is still blank...

Yes, it can happen. Transcripts update in batches. Sometimes weekly. Sometimes more often. Blank transcript means processing hasn't completed initial stages. Once it moves to review stage, codes appear. Final stages can happen rapidly. 846 code appears when refund is approved. DD date is typically 3-5 days later.

Thanks for this explanation! I filed on February 18th and my transcript just updated on March 8th with everything at once. Went from nothing to a DD date of March 13th. Was starting to get worried since I need this for my car payment due on the 15th.

This is so helpful! I've been checking my transcript every day and getting so anxious seeing nothing there. Feels better knowing it could just update all at once! πŸ˜…

This happened to me last year! My transcript was empty for about 3 weeks, then suddenly had everything including the 846 code. Got my money 2 days later. Was a bit nerve-wracking since we were waiting to put a down payment on a house.

I was in exactly the same situation 24 days ago! My transcript was completely blank for exactly 18 days after filing. Called the IRS 11 times without getting through. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent in 27 minutes! The agent confirmed my return was in processing and not flagged for review. Transcript updated 2 days later with all codes including 846! So impressed with how quickly I got an answer instead of stressing for another week!

Another verification method is checking your Account transcript instead of Return transcript. The Account transcript sometimes updates before the Return transcript with TC 150 (return filed) appearing first. This can indicate your return is in the pipeline but hasn't completed full processing. Also verify you're selecting the correct tax year when requesting transcripts, as 2023 processing would show under 2023 transcripts, not 2024.

The IRS Master File processing system operates on weekly cycles that complete on Thursdays. Your transcript could update overnight Thursday into Friday with Transaction Codes (TC) including TC 150 (return filed), TC 806 (withholding credit), and potentially TC 846 (refund issued) all at once. Amazingly, the entire sequence from nothing to refund issued can happen in a single batch update. I was shocked when I learned their system works this way!

I had this exact situation last month and used taxr.ai to help me understand what was happening. Here's what I did: 1. First, I uploaded my blank transcript to taxr.ai 2. It explained that blank transcripts mean my return hadn't completed initial processing 3. When my transcript finally updated, I uploaded it again 4. The tool immediately identified all my codes and explained what each meant 5. It even predicted my exact deposit date based on the 846 code Have you considered using a tool like this to interpret your transcript once it updates?

Ever noticed how the IRS system seems to operate in mysterious ways? My transcript was completely empty for 23 days this season. No codes, no cycle date, nothing. Then suddenly on a Friday morning - BOOM - fully processed with an 846 code and a direct deposit date for the following Wednesday. Received exactly as scheduled. The system doesn't show incremental progress like we'd expect in 2024, does it? It's more like an all-or-nothing update in many cases.

My transcript went from blank to complete with DD date in one update last year too. I remember because I was checking it every morning like I did the year before. In 2022, I saw a gradual progression of codes over about 10 days. But in 2023, it was blank one day and fully processed the next. Is this happening to more people this year? Seems like the IRS might have changed something in their processing system.

Military family here. Filed February 15. Transcript blank until March 2. Updated overnight with all codes including 846. Received deposit March 7. Five days total from transcript update to money in account. Normal pattern for uncomplicated returns. Different if you claim certain credits or have verification issues.

Word of caution - don't count on this happening quickly! πŸ˜… My transcript was blank for 6 weeks last year, then updated with a bunch of delay codes instead of the 846. Turned out I had an identity verification issue that needed resolving. If you're still seeing nothing after 3-4 weeks, might be worth looking into whether there's a hold-up rather than assuming it'll just magically appear with a DD date soon.

Yes, transcripts can definitely jump from completely blank to showing the 846 code with a direct deposit date in the same week! This happened to me just this tax season - my transcript was empty for 16 days after acceptance, then updated overnight on a Thursday with everything including the 846 code and my DD date was set for the following Tuesday. Got my refund exactly as scheduled. The IRS processes returns in batches, and once your return clears all their automated checks, all the transaction codes appear at once. Since you filed 2/22 and it's now 3/9, you're right in the typical timeframe for this to happen. Military returns sometimes get prioritized too, so hopefully yours updates soon! Keep checking Thursday nights/Friday mornings as that's when most batch updates occur.

That's really reassuring to hear! @2f49aef1b095 The Thursday night/Friday morning timing tip is super helpful - I had no idea there was a pattern to when they update. I've been randomly checking throughout the week. Since you mentioned military returns sometimes get prioritized, do you know if that's because of the deployment status or just military in general? My husband's unit is supposed to return next month and we're trying to time some financial decisions around getting our refund.

From my experience helping fellow military families, deployment status can sometimes expedite processing, but it's not guaranteed. The IRS has provisions for combat zone extensions and expedited processing for active duty in certain situations, but it varies case by case. What I've noticed is that straightforward returns (W-2 only, standard deduction) tend to process faster regardless of military status. The Thursday night updates @2f49aef1b095 mentioned are spot on - that's when their Master File system completes weekly cycles. Since your return was accepted 2/22, you're definitely in the window where it could pop overnight with everything at once. Keep an eye on it Thursday evenings, and don't panic if it stays blank a bit longer - sometimes military pay complexities (like combat pay exclusions or moving expenses) can add a few extra days to processing.

Thanks @5496fe84f85f for the detailed breakdown on military processing! That's really helpful context. I'm actually a newcomer here but have been lurking and reading everyone's experiences. My situation is similar - filed a pretty straightforward return (just W-2s, standard deduction) on 2/28, so I'm about 10 days behind the original poster's timeline. Reading all these stories about overnight updates from blank to 846 code is giving me hope! I've been checking randomly but will definitely start focusing on those Thursday night/Friday morning updates you all mentioned. It's reassuring to see so many people have had the same "blank to complete" experience. Military families supporting each other with tax info - love to see it! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
