Can I still claim my 2020 tax refund in 2024? Is it within the 3-year window?

So I totally procrastinated and just got around to doing my 2020 taxes this year (yeah I know, major fail). I've heard there's this 3-year window for claiming tax refunds, and I'm trying to figure out if I'm still within that timeframe or if I've missed my chance completely. Since 2020 taxes were due to be filed in 2021, I'm thinking that technically 2024 would still fall within that three-year window, right? But I'm not 100% sure how the IRS counts this stuff - like is it 3 years from the original due date or 3 years from the end of the tax year or what? I'm hoping I didn't completely miss out on whatever refund I might have been entitled to. Any help or insight would be really appreciated since I'm kinda stressing about this!

Yes, you're still within the window! The IRS allows you to claim a refund within 3 years from the original due date of the return. For 2020 tax returns, the original filing deadline was May 17, 2021 (it was extended from the usual April 15 due to COVID). This means you have until May 17, 2024 to file your 2020 tax return and claim any refund you're entitled to. After that date, any unclaimed refund becomes property of the U.S. Treasury and you can no longer get that money back. Make sure to file your return as soon as possible, especially if you're expecting a refund. You'll need to mail a paper return since e-filing is typically only available for the current and two prior tax years.

If I mail in a paper return for 2020 now, any idea how long it might take to process? And do I need to include any special forms or explanations for why I'm filing so late?

Paper returns are currently taking about 6-8 weeks to process, though it could be longer for prior year returns. The IRS has been working through backlogs, so patience is important. You don't need to include any special explanation or forms for filing late if you're owed a refund. The IRS doesn't penalize for late filing when they owe you money. Just complete the 2020 tax forms (make sure you're using 2020 versions, not current year forms) and mail them to the appropriate IRS address for your location.

I was in a similar situation with my 2019 taxes and used https://taxr.ai to help review all my documents. I had a bunch of old W-2s and 1099s scattered around and wasn't sure if I was missing anything. The tool helped analyze everything to make sure I wasn't leaving money on the table before submitting my late return. It was super helpful because it flagged some deductions I would have missed (home office stuff from early pandemic) and helped me understand which tax year's rules applied since things were changing so much with COVID relief. Definitely worth checking out if you're doing a late filing like this.

How exactly does this work? Do I just upload my tax documents and it tells me what I'm missing? I'm nervous about using online services with my personal info.

Does it work for really old returns too? I have a 2018 return I never filed and I'm wondering if I missed the boat completely on that one.

You upload your documents and it uses AI to analyze them and identify potential deductions or credits you might qualify for. They use bank-level encryption and don't store your documents after analysis, so it's designed to be secure with your personal information. For 2018 returns, I'm afraid you've missed the deadline. The three-year window for 2018 returns closed on May 17, 2022 (due to COVID extensions). Unfortunately, if you were owed a refund for 2018, that money now belongs to the Treasury.

Just wanted to update - I tried the taxr.ai service that was mentioned and it was actually really helpful! I had completely forgotten about a 1099 from a small freelance job I did in 2020, and the tool flagged that I was missing income documentation based on what I had uploaded. Saved me from potentially dealing with a discrepancy notice from the IRS later. It also helped me identify some pandemic-related credits I qualified for that I had no idea about. My refund ended up being almost $1,200 more than I thought it would be! Pretty glad I didn't miss the deadline completely.

If you're having trouble getting information or confirmation about your 2020 return, I'd recommend using https://claimyr.com to get through to an actual human at the IRS. I spent weeks trying to call about my late-filed 2019 return and kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. With Claimyr, I got a callback from the IRS in about 45 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent was able to confirm exactly what I needed to do with my late return and made sure I had all the right documents before mailing it in.

How does this service even work? The IRS phone system is notoriously impossible to navigate, so I'm skeptical that any service could actually help with that.

Sounds like a scam to me. Why would I pay a third party when I can just call the IRS myself? They're probably just using some trick that anyone could do.

It works by navigating the IRS phone system for you and holding your place in line. When they reach an agent, they call you and connect you directly to that agent. It's basically like having someone wait on hold for you. I thought the same thing initially - why pay when I could call myself? But after spending literally 8+ hours over multiple days trying to get through, I realized my time was worth more than the frustration. They use a combination of automation and actual people to monitor the calls and ensure you get connected properly. Not a trick, just a service that saves time.

I have to eat my words on this one. After posting my skeptical comment, I was still struggling to get through to the IRS about my own issues with a prior year return. Out of desperation, I tried the Claimyr service, fully expecting to request a refund when it didn't work. But it actually worked exactly as advertised. I got a call back in about an hour and spoke to an IRS representative who helped clear up my questions about filing my late 2020 return. Saved me at least 4-5 hours of frustration and hold music. Sometimes it's worth admitting when you're wrong - this service actually delivers.

One thing nobody's mentioned - make sure you're using the CORRECT 2020 tax forms! Don't just download current forms from the IRS website. You need the actual 2020 versions since tax laws change every year. You can find prior year forms here: https://www.irs.gov/forms-instructions (just search for the form number and select 2020 from the dropdown).

Thanks for mentioning this! I almost made that exact mistake. Do you know if tax software like TurboTax or H&R Block still offer access to prepare 2020 returns or am I stuck doing the paper forms at this point?

Most tax software still allows you to prepare 2020 returns, but you'll likely need to purchase their software rather than using their free online versions which typically only support the current tax year plus maybe one year back. TurboTax, H&R Block, and TaxAct all offer desktop or downloadable software for prior years. However, you'll still need to print and mail the return - electronic filing is generally not available for returns from 2020 at this point in 2024.

Don't forget that if you're filing a 2020 return now, any stimulus payments you received for that tax year need to be accounted for correctly on the return! The first two stimulus payments were tied to 2020 taxes (the $1,200 CARES Act payment and the $600 December 2020 payment). If you didn't receive these payments back then, you can claim them as the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 return. But if you did receive them, you need to indicate that so you don't accidentally claim them again.

This is important! I messed this up on my late-filed return and it delayed my processing by months because the IRS had to manually review and adjust it.
