Can I claim my working 17yr old as dependent if she files her own taxes?

My teenager started working part time and will need to file taxes this year. Not sure if I can still claim her as a dependent on my return since she's earning her own money now. She lives with me full time and I provide most of her support. Anyone dealt with this before?

Yes, you can still claim her! As long as you provide more than 50% of her support and she lives with you, she qualifies as your dependent even if she files her own return. She'll just need to check the box on her return saying someone can claim her as dependent. The key tests are: she's under 19, lives with you, and you provide majority support.

Thank you! Do you know if theres a income limit for her that would change this?

For 2023, she can earn up to $13,850 and still be claimed as your dependent. Just make sure she marks that box saying she can be claimed!

My son started working at 16 and we went thru this. You're good fam 👍 just keep receipts of what you pay for her support incase of audit

Smart thinking about the receipts, hadn't thought of that!

make sure to tell her about that box that says 'someone can claim you as dependent' - my kid missed it last year and it was a whole thing with the irs 🤦‍♀️

Reminder: she might still need to file even if she makes less than $13,850 if she had any taxes withheld and wants a refund!

This! My daughter got back like $200 last year from her summer job

Just went through this exact situation last year! You can definitely still claim her as a dependent. The main thing is that you're providing more than half her support (food, housing, clothes, etc.) and she lives with you more than half the year. Her having a job doesn't disqualify her at all. Make sure when she files that she checks the box indicating someone else can claim her as a dependent - this prevents the IRS from getting confused when both returns are processed. Good luck!
