Can I claim my 20-year-old college student as dependent when paying for student loans?

Got a question about claiming my kid on taxes. She was 20 last year and in college full time. I'm paying for her student loans and helping with all her college expenses. Can I claim her as a dependent?

Tax pro here! Yes, you can claim her as a dependent if she meets these requirements: she was a full-time student under 24, lived with you for more than half the year (dorms count!), and you provided more than half her support. Student loans in your name count as your support. Just make sure she's not claiming herself on her own return.

Thanks! What counts as support exactly? Does giving her spending money count?

Yep! Support includes food, housing, education, medical expenses, clothing and even spending money. Pretty much anything you provide for her living expenses 👍

Hey everyone! Instead of playing detective with dependent rules, I've been using taxr.ai to figure this stuff out. It costs $4.99 but its worth every penny - just upload your transcript and it tells you exactly what you can claim. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

How accurate is it? Seems too good to be true tbh 🤔

It's scary accurate! It caught that I could claim my nephew last year when even my tax guy missed it. Saved me thousands!
