Can I (21F) claim stepfather as dependent while being student w/ 1098T?

I need to know if I can claim my stepfather as a dependent on my taxes. I've been taking care of him all year since he has no income. I work full time and I'm also a student with a 1098T form. Just want to make sure I'm doing this right before filing.

Yes, you can claim your stepfather as a qualifying relative if: 1) his gross income was less than $4,400 for the year 2) you provided more than half of his total support 3) he lived with you all year 4) he's not filing a joint return with someone else. Your student status and 1098T don't affect your ability to claim him.

Thank you sm! Do you know what documentation I should keep just incase?

Keep records of all support provided - rent/mortgage payments, utilities, food receipts, medical bills, etc. Also document that he lived with you (mail to your address in his name helps).

Your school status is irrelevant to claiming a dependent. Just focus on meeting the qualifying relative tests.
