CRA placed a hold on my tax refund because of missing gst/hst return - how to expedite?

So I just found out that the CRA has put a hold on my entire tax refund ($4,570) because apparently I was missing a gst/hst return from my small business. I had no idea this was even an issue until I called to ask about the status of my refund that was supposed to come back in February. I immediately submitted the missing gst/hst returns through my accountant as soon as I found out (literally the same day), but the CRA agent told me it's going to take 10 WEEKS to remove the hold and process my refund! I'm absolutely floored by this timeline. Is there anything I can do to speed this up? I was counting on that money for some major repairs on my work vehicle, and waiting until nearly May seems ridiculous when the returns are now properly filed. Has anyone dealt with this before and found a way to expedite the process with CRA? I've already tried calling back twice but got the same answer both times.

Unfortunately, CRA holds due to missing GST/HST returns are pretty standard, and the 10-week timeline is actually their normal processing time for these situations. The hold is automatically applied when your account shows missing returns, and they won't release your income tax refund until those GST/HST obligations are cleared. While 10 weeks sounds excessive, it's because they need to: 1) Process your GST/HST returns, 2) Update your account status in their system, and 3) Release the hold on your income tax refund. Each step goes through different departments. You might be able to speed things up slightly by calling the CRA Business Enquiries line directly at 1-800-959-5525. Explain that you've already filed the missing returns and ask if there's any way to expedite the release of the hold. Sometimes (but not always) a supervisor can flag your account for priority processing if you explain your situation.

Thanks for the explanation. I actually called that exact number but got nowhere. They just repeated the 10-week timeframe. Would it help if I called and specifically asked to speak with a supervisor right away? Or should I mention some kind of financial hardship?

Asking for a supervisor is definitely worth trying. The front-line agents often don't have the authority to expedite anything, but supervisors sometimes do. And yes, explaining specific financial hardship can help - be clear about why the delay is causing significant issues for you (like your vehicle repairs being essential for your business operations). Another approach is to contact the CRA's Problem Resolution Program through your local Tax Services Office. They're specifically designed to help with situations where the normal channels aren't working. Also, consider reaching out to your MP's office - they often have dedicated staff who can contact CRA on your behalf, which sometimes gets faster results.

I went through something similar last year with the CRA holding my refund because of a missed GST filing. After weeks of getting nowhere with regular phone calls, I tried using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it made a huge difference! I uploaded the notice I got from CRA, and it analyzed my situation and gave me specific instructions on exactly what to say when calling back. The tool told me about a specific processing code I should mention and which department to ask for - stuff I would never have known otherwise. When I called back using their guidance, I got connected to someone who actually had the authority to help, and my hold was released in 2 weeks instead of the 10 they originally quoted.

How exactly does this service work? Do they connect you with the CRA directly or just give you information? I'm in a similar situation but worried about sharing my tax info with some random website.

Sounds too good to be true tbh. Did you have to pay for this service? And what kind of processing code could possibly override the CRA's internal procedures?

The service doesn't connect you to CRA - it's more like an AI analyst that reviews your tax documents and situation, then provides you with specific guidance. You upload your CRA correspondence and it identifies the exact issue, relevant policies, and gives you a script with exactly what to say. The processing code wasn't to override procedures - it was actually a specific reference number for my type of case that helps the CRA agent understand exactly what department needs to handle it. It's all about getting to the right person who can actually help rather than the general call center staff. And yes, there is a fee for the service, but it was worth it to get my $3800 refund months earlier than expected.

I tried taxr.ai after seeing the recommendation here and I've got to admit I was wrong about being skeptical. My situation was almost identical - CRA holding my refund for a missed quarterly GST filing. The taxr.ai system analyzed my notice and actually found that the CRA had made an error in applying the hold since I had already filed one of the returns they claimed was missing. The guidance they provided included requesting a specific type of account review and mentioning particular sections of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Following their exact script, I got through to someone in the Business Returns department who confirmed there was an error and expedited the release. My refund ($5,232) was deposited last week - only 12 days after my call instead of the 10 weeks I was initially told.

If you're still stuck waiting after trying everything else, you might want to check out Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in your exact situation with CRA holding my refund over GST/HST returns, and after weeks of getting nowhere, I was desperate. Regular calls to CRA meant waiting on hold for 2+ hours only to be told nothing could be done. Claimyr got me through to an actual CRA agent in about 15 minutes instead of hours of waiting. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent I spoke with was able to review my file on the spot, confirm my returns were processed, and tag my account for expedited review. Total game-changer when you're dealing with these frustrating holds.

How does this even work? I thought the CRA phone system was completely jammed and there was no way around their queue system.

This sounds like you're just paying to cut in line ahead of everyone else. Kinda sketchy if you ask me. If everyone used this service wouldn't it just make the wait times even worse for regular people?

0 coins

It's not about cutting in line - the service uses an automated system that navigates the CRA phone tree and waits on hold for you. When an agent answers, you get a call back and are connected immediately. They're just taking the hold time burden off you. The CRA phone system actually has multiple entry points and queuing systems depending on which options you select. Claimyr has figured out the most efficient pathways through the system for different types of issues. It's completely legitimate - you're still speaking directly with official CRA agents who have full authority to help with your account.

I'm back to admit I was completely wrong about Claimyr. After my skeptical comment, I decided to try it anyway since nothing else was working with my CRA hold situation. Within 20 minutes I was talking to an actual CRA agent instead of the 3+ hours I spent on my previous attempts. The agent I reached was able to see that my GST/HST returns had been properly processed in the system but the hold hadn't been automatically removed. She manually released the hold while I was on the phone and told me to expect my refund within 5-10 business days. Got the deposit yesterday - 8 days after the call instead of the original 10 weeks I was quoted. Sometimes you have to admit when you're wrong, and I was definitely wrong about this service!

Have you tried going to a local CRA office in person? I found that face-to-face interactions sometimes get better results than phone calls. When I had a similar hold last year, I made an appointment at my local tax services office and brought all my documents. The agent was able to verify my returns were filed and put a note on my account to expedite the review. Got my refund in about 3 weeks instead of 10.

The in-person CRA offices have been hit or miss since covid. Some locations still require appointments weeks in advance, and others limit what services they offer in person. Definitely worth checking if your local office is fully operational before making the trip.

That's a good point about checking availability first. My experience was in Toronto where the office was fully operational, but it's definitely location-dependent. Most CRA offices now require you to book an appointment through their website rather than just walking in. Another option is to ask your accountant if they have access to the CRA Represent a Client portal with Level 2 authorization. Sometimes tax professionals can get faster responses through their dedicated channels than individuals can through the general line.

Just a heads up that if you have any other outstanding returns or filings with CRA (not just GST/HST), they might put additional holds even after you resolve this one. Happened to my brother - fixed the GST issue only to discover they were also holding because of a T5 filing from 2 years ago that he didn't even know about.

This is so true. CRA's system is designed to hold refunds for ANY outstanding filing requirements, even from years ago. I'd recommend logging into your CRA My Account and checking the "Uncashed Cheques" section too - sometimes there are old refunds you never received that can be reissued.

I had almost the exact same situation happen to me last year - CRA held my $3,200 refund for 3 months over missing GST returns that I had no idea were even required. The frustrating part is they don't proactively notify you about these holds until you call asking where your refund is. One thing that helped me was getting a written confirmation from CRA that my missing returns had been received and processed. When I called back with that confirmation number, the agent was able to see the status change in their system and put a priority flag on releasing the hold. It still took about 6 weeks total, but that was better than the 10-12 weeks they initially quoted. Also make sure to ask for a written explanation of why the hold was applied and what specific steps need to be completed to remove it. Having that documentation helped when I had to call back multiple times to check on the status.

I went through this exact situation just 6 months ago with a $2,800 refund held for missing GST returns. The 10-week timeline is unfortunately standard, but I found a few things that helped speed up the process: 1. **Document everything** - Get reference numbers for every call you make and ask for written confirmation that your GST returns were received and are being processed. 2. **Call the dedicated Business Enquiries line early in the morning** - I had better luck getting through around 8:15 AM when they first open rather than later in the day. 3. **Ask specifically about "expedited processing due to financial hardship"** - Since you mentioned needing the money for essential vehicle repairs for your business, this could qualify. They have internal procedures for these situations but agents won't always volunteer this information. 4. **Get your accountant involved** - If they have CRA Represent a Client access, they can often get faster responses through professional channels than you can as an individual. The good news is that once the hold is released, the refund usually processes within 2-3 business days. Keep calling every 2 weeks to check status and document each interaction. Persistence really does pay off with CRA issues.

This is really helpful advice! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - CRA is holding my refund for missing quarterly GST filings. The part about asking for "expedited processing due to financial hardship" is something I hadn't heard before. Do you know if there's a specific form or process for that, or is it just a matter of explaining your situation to the right agent? I've been getting different answers from different agents about what can and can't be expedited.

0 coins

There isn't a specific form for financial hardship expediting, but there are internal CRA procedures for it. When you call, ask to speak with a supervisor and explain that the delay is causing "undue financial hardship" - use those exact words. Be specific about how the delay affects your business operations (like not being able to repair essential equipment). The key is getting to someone with authority to make exceptions. Front-line agents usually can't do anything, but supervisors can sometimes flag accounts for priority review or escalate to specialized departments. Also mention that you're a small business owner whose operations are being impacted - they have different procedures for business vs. personal tax issues. I had to call three times before I got a supervisor who was willing to help, so don't give up if the first agent says nothing can be done. Document each call and reference previous conversations when you call back.

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - CRA holding my $2,100 refund for missing GST returns. After reading through all these responses, I tried calling the Business Enquiries line this morning using some of the strategies mentioned here. I specifically asked to speak with a supervisor about "expedited processing due to financial hardship" and explained that the delay was affecting my ability to pay essential business expenses. The supervisor was much more helpful than the front-line agents I'd spoken to before and said she could flag my account for priority review. She also gave me a specific timeline - said to expect the hold to be reviewed within 3-4 weeks instead of the original 10 weeks I was quoted. She emphasized that I should call back if I don't see movement by then and reference the priority flag she placed on my account (confirmation number BH-2025-0411-7834). For anyone else in this situation, I'd definitely recommend asking for a supervisor right away rather than accepting the standard timeline from the first agent. The difference in helpfulness was night and day. Will update if I hear anything sooner than expected!

That's great to hear you had success with the supervisor approach! I'm curious - when you asked to speak with a supervisor, did you have to wait on hold again or were you transferred directly? I've been hesitant to ask for supervisors because I'm worried about getting disconnected after already waiting so long to get through initially. Also, did the supervisor give you any specific documentation or just the verbal confirmation with that reference number?
