Best way to mail an amended 1040-X state tax return? Certified mail questions

I just realized I completely forgot to include a document on my original tax filing and now have to amend both my federal and state returns. Already got the federal amendment e-filed (thank goodness), but for some reason my state doesn't allow e-filing for amended returns in 2025 - so frustrating! I have to mail in my state 1040-X the old-fashioned way. Two questions I'm stressing about: 1) What's the most reliable way to send this amended state return? Should I use certified mail? Priority? Something else? 2) If I go with certified mail, can I just bring my own regular #10 envelope from home to the post office and have them certify it? Or do I need to buy one of those special certified mail envelopes they sell? This is my first time dealing with a 1040-X and I'm paranoid about it getting lost in the mail. Definitely use certified mail with return receipt requested when sending tax documents! This gives you proof of mailing date (important for meeting deadlines) and confirmation when it's delivered. You can absolutely use your own #10 envelope from home - the post office doesn't sell "certified mail envelopes." When you go to the post office, just tell them you want to send it certified mail with return receipt. They'll give you a green certified mail form to fill out and attach to your envelope, plus a return receipt card (small pink or green card) that will come back to you once delivered. The certified mail service costs around $4.15, and the return receipt is about $3.35 extra. Keep that receipt and tracking number forever! Take a photo of the completed forms and envelope before mailing as extra insurance.

One more tip about mailing tax documents - make sure you make copies of EVERYTHING before you send it! I cannot stress this enough. Copy every page, front and back, including all attachments and supporting documents. Take pictures too. I had to mail an amended return last year and the state tax office somehow lost two pages of my supporting documentation. State amendment processing times vary wildly depending on which state you're in. Some states are processing them in 8-12 weeks, while others (looking at you, California and New York) can take 6+ months, especially during peak tax season. Many state systems don't show much tracking info online for amendments either. If you sent it certified mail, you at least have proof they received it. After about 12 weeks, it's reasonable to try contacting them for a status update. Print your name and social security number on EVERY SINGLE PAGE of your amended return and attachments!!! I work at an accounting firm and you wouldn't believe how often pages get separated during processing. Also, secure everything with a paperclip, not staples (many state agencies specifically request no staples).
