Anyone with 1099-R Forms - Have You Received Updates on Your Refund?
Trying to track my refund status and looking for others with similar situation: • Filed my return on 2/15/2024 with a 1099-R distribution from my university retirement account • Used TurboTax and e-filed with direct deposit • WMR tool still shows "Processing" with no updates • Transcript shows no updates either Are other 1099-R filers seeing movement on their returns? Wondering if retirement distributions are being processed differently this year or if I'm just in a normal delay pattern.

I'm currently tracking my 1099-R distribution refund as well. The IRS has implemented additional verification protocols for retirement distributions in TY2023, especially for early withdrawals with exception codes. According to Publication 575, retirement distributions are subject to additional scrutiny under the PATH Act verification process. Have you verified if your distribution code in Box 7 matches your qualified exception status?

Went thru this last yr w/ my 401k rollover. Box 7 code is super important! Mine had code G (direct rollover) but still got delayed bc the IRS computer flagged it. Took about 6 extra wks but eventually processed correctly. Def double-check ur codes match what u claimed.

So if my 1099-R has code 1 in Box 7 and I claimed an exception for higher education expenses, is that going to cause delays? I submitted Form 5329 with my return to explain the exception. Should I be calling the IRS to explain or just wait it out?

The verification delay is standard procedure. Per Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6.4.35, distribution code verification typically adds 14-21 days to processing time. Nothing to be concerned about if your documentation is correct.

Have you checked if your 1099-R was properly reported by the payer? Could it be that your distribution was coded as taxable but you're claiming it as non-taxable? Isn't it possible that the discrepancy is triggering additional verification? Did you receive any CP12 or 5071C notices that might indicate the IRS needs more information?

Just checked my transcript again and finally got an update! • Filed 2/10 with a 1099-R from my university retirement plan • No movement until yesterday • Now showing DDD for next week My situation seems similar to many other education-related retirement distributions - much slower than regular W-2 only returns but faster than business returns. Comparing to my previous years, this is about 2 weeks longer than normal.

Just got my update too after exactly 47 days of waiting! My 1099-R was for $12,450 from an early withdrawal (code 1) but I qualified for the first-time homebuyer exception. The refund amount is $3,782 which matches what I calculated. Deposit scheduled for April 17th.

I had a similar experience last year with my retirement distribution. The extra verification was actually reassuring once I understood why it was happening. They're making sure no one is improperly avoiding the early withdrawal penalty. I appreciated that they were thorough even though the wait was stressful.

Did you receive any interim notices while waiting? I'm at day 38 with no updates yet. Did your WMR bars disappear during the waiting period? Was your transcript showing N/A until it suddenly updated?

My 1099-R refund was like watching paint dry on a humid day - painfully slow! After 6 weeks of nothing, I needed answers because I was counting on that money for medical bills. Called the regular IRS number for 3 days straight but kept getting the "high call volume" message. Finally used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. Found out my return was just in the verification queue for retirement distributions - nothing wrong, just typical delays. Agent estimated 2 more weeks, and she was right - refund hit my account 12 days later. Saved me from weeks more of anxiety wondering if something was wrong.

Has anyone else noticed that 1099-R processing seems to depend on which distribution code you have? Last year my rollover (code G) processed quickly, but this year with an early withdrawal (code 1), I'm going on week 8 with no updates. Anyone else seeing differences between distribution types?

Had this issue. Got delayed two months. No explanation. Called three times. Different answers each time. Finally received refund last week. 1099-R was from pension distribution. IRS agent finally told me they're reviewing these more carefully this year. Don't panic. It will come.
