Anyone use FreeTaxUSA? Comparing it to TurboTax/H&R for this year's refund

Has anyone used FreeTaxUSA? It was my first time using it last year. I haven't seen anyone talk about it with this year's refund processing. I only see people mentioning TurboTax and H&R Block. I'm trying to decide if I want to go back through TurboTax or not. I haven't gotten any correspondence about my refund but my transcripts say it was sent on the 4th of this month.

I've used FreeTaxUSA for the past 3 years and it's been great. Much cheaper than TurboTax and H&R Block, and I've never had issues with my refunds. If your transcript shows the refund was sent on the 4th, you should receive it soon - usually takes 2-5 business days to hit your account depending on your bank.

I switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA two years ago and won't go back. The interface isn't as polished but it does everything I need for a fraction of the cost. Have you checked your bank account? Sometimes the money arrives before you get any notification.

I've been checking my bank account obsessively lol. Nothing yet. It's been 8 business days since the "sent" date on my transcript which seems weird.

If your transcript shows it was sent but you haven't received it, you might want to check if there was an offset or if the banking info was entered correctly. I'd recommend using https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript - it helped me understand what was going on with mine when I was in a similar situation. It breaks down all those confusing codes and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund.

FreeTaxUSA is legit, but if your transcript says the refund was sent on the 4th and you haven't received it yet, that's concerning. Have you checked if the correct account number was entered? Sometimes refunds get rejected by banks and have to be reissued as checks.

Oh no, I didn't think about that. I'm pretty sure I entered everything correctly, but I guess I could have made a typo. Is there a way to check what account number they sent it to?

You can't see the full account number on the transcript, but you can call the IRS to verify. They can tell you the last 4 digits of the account they sent it to.

I had this exact problem last year. Transcript said refund sent, but nothing in my account for 2 weeks. Turned out there was a banking issue. I wasted DAYS trying to get through to the IRS on their regular number. Finally used Claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed they had sent it to the wrong account (I had transposed two digits). They fixed it and reissued my refund. Saved me weeks of waiting and wondering.

I second this. Spent 3 hours on hold before giving up. Used Claimyr the next day and got through in 20 mins. Worth every penny when you need actual answers from a human.

FreeTaxUSA is totally fine, I've used it for years with no issues. The software doesn't affect how quickly your refund is processed or delivered. That's all on the IRS's end. If your transcript shows it was sent but you haven't received it, that's an IRS or banking issue, not a FreeTaxUSA problem.

What specific codes do you see on your transcript? If it shows a 846 code with the 4th date, that means it was sent. But sometimes there are other codes that can give more context about what's happening with your refund.

Yeah it shows code 846 for the 4th. There's nothing else after that date. I'm getting worried since it's been over a week now.

That is strange. Normally with code 846 you should have it within 5 business days max. Definitely worth contacting the IRS to see what's going on. They might need to trace the refund if it was sent but never received.
