Anyone know if IRS e-filing system still down?

Feels like trying to get water from a stone right now with the IRS e-filing system. Been trying to submit my return since yesterday and it's like hitting a brick wall. I've used this system for years and never seen it this backed up. Anyone else experiencing this? I've got a refund I need to claim and the clock is ticking like a time bomb. Not sure if it's just temporary maintenance or something bigger...

The IRS e-filing system appears to be experiencing some intermittent outages, which is somewhat typical during peak filing periods. Based on the IRS operations page, they're likely conducting system maintenance or experiencing higher than normal traffic volume. It might be worth trying again in a few hours, possibly during off-peak hours (late evening or early morning), as the system tends to have fewer users during those times. I understand how frustrating this can be, especially when you're waiting on a refund.

Yep, def having issues too. Been trying since last night. IRS tech team prob doing updates b/c of tax season rush. Their status page doesn't always show real-time probs tbh. Sometimes clearing browser cache helps, or trying a diff browser. Also their mobile site sometimes works when desktop is down. Worth a shot.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 2.9.14, the IRS must maintain a 99.5% uptime for their e-filing systems during peak season, but they're allowed scheduled maintenance windows which are typically performed between 1am-5am ET. If you're still having trouble reaching an actual person at the IRS, I've had success using Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get connected to an agent without the endless hold times. They can confirm if there's a system-wide issue or if it's specific to your return. Per Publication 1345, if electronic filing is unavailable, the IRS must provide alternative methods or timeline extensions.

I'm not sure about using a third-party service just to talk to the IRS. Seems like adding another layer of complexity to an already frustrating process. Has anyone actually confirmed this works? What if they can't connect you either and you've just wasted money? I'm worried about getting caught in an endless loop of services that don't actually solve the problem.

What's the Authentication Factor process like with Claimyr? Do they require you to provide your Personal Identification Number or AGI verification data? Just wondering about the security protocols before I consider using it.

I've been dealing with this since Monday! Called the IRS tech support line yesterday and after waiting 1 hour and 37 minutes, they confirmed they're having "database synchronization issues" across their filing platforms. The rep told me they expect it to be resolved by tomorrow morning. Last year, I had a similar issue and ended up missing the deadline for my quarterly estimated payment because of it. Had to pay a penalty even though it was their system that was down! Make sure you document your attempts to file in case you need to prove you tried before the deadline.

Did the IRS representative mention anything about automatic extensions being granted due to the system outage? I was reading on the IRS.gov website that sometimes they issue blanket extensions when their systems are down, but couldn't find specific information about this current situation.

The system is back up now - just successfully submitted my return 10 minutes ago. I've been checking hourly since yesterday afternoon. What worked for me was going through the "Where's My Refund" tool first, which seemed to refresh my session credentials, then immediately trying to access the e-file system. I've experienced these outages before during the 2022 tax season when they were updating their identity verification protocols, but I'm surprised they're still having these issues in 2024. They must be running on technology from the stone age compared to what banks use these days.

Oh thank goodness!!! I've been stressing so much about this! Did you have to do anything special when you logged back in? I've saved all my tax info in the system and I'm worried I'll have to start over if I try again. 😰

Appreciate the workaround with the WMR tool. That's actually quite clever - must reset the authentication token or something similar. Will try this approach if I encounter further difficulties.

This is exactly what happens every year. The IRS knows exactly when peak filing periods occur, yet they never scale their systems appropriately. I worked in government IT for 15 years and this is a classic case of underfunding infrastructure while expecting it to handle increasing loads.

I went through this same roller coaster last week. It's like when the DMV website crashes right before registration deadlines - totally predictable yet somehow never fixed. I tried for two days straight before getting through. What worked for me was filing at 4:30am when server load was lower. If you're on a deadline, the IRS actually has a form (Form 8948) that you can submit explaining why you had to paper file instead of e-file. Compared to the passport renewal system issues last summer, the IRS is actually handling this better - at least they have status updates.
