Anyone Receive IRS Code 0805 on Their Transcript?

Just checked my transcript today and noticed something new - code 0805 appeared. I've been meticulously tracking every change on my account (got nothing better to do in retirement, ha!) and this one has me stumped. I've searched through all my usual IRS code references but can't find a clear explanation. Has anyone else received this code on their 2023 return? What does it actually mean? I filed back in February and have been waiting patiently... well, semi-patiently. Already received my state refund weeks ago, but federal seems to be taking the scenic route.

Code 0805 means refund hold. IRS is reviewing your return. Nothing to worry about yet. Common this year. Happens randomly. Could be identity verification. Could be income verification. Wait for a letter. Should come soon.

Thank you for explaining this. I've been worried about what this code meant, but haven't wanted to call the IRS in case it makes things worse somehow.

This happened to me last tax season too. My return was held for about 3 weeks with this code, then suddenly processed without any letter or explanation. Compared to my previous returns which processed in 10 days, this was frustrating but eventually resolved itself. If you're approaching 60 days though, that's when I'd start making calls.

Can confirm. Got this code last month. Freaked out at first tbh. IRS held my refund for exactly 21 days. No letter ever came. Then boom - DD hit my acct with no warning. Seems like they're doing random checks this yr more than usual.

Have you checked if there were any other codes that appeared before or after the 0805? Sometimes the context matters more than the individual code itself, doesn't it? And did you claim any credits this year that might trigger additional review? The timing of this is interesting since we're already well into the processing season, don't you think?

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.1, code 0805 indicates a manual review hold. Per Publication 5192, taxpayers have the right to be informed about what's happening with their return. If you've waited more than 21 days since e-filing, you should contact the IRS directly. I tried calling the main number for 3 days with no luck. Then I used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed my 0805 code was just a random review and gave me an estimated completion date. Worth the fee to avoid hours of redial frustration.

I've seen several people recommend this service. Does it actually work? The IRS website says average wait times are 45+ minutes these days. How does this service get you through faster than waiting in the queue yourself?

OMG I was so skeptical about this too but I was DESPERATE after trying for 2 weeks! 😩 It actually works! They have some system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you, then calls you when an agent is about to pick up. Saved me from losing my mind with that awful hold music! I was literally about to give up before trying it.

There's an important distinction to make here. Code 0805 is specifically a Refund Hold indicator in the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS). It's different from a 570 (additional account action pending) or a 420 (examination indicator). The 0805 typically appears during the Return Integrity Verification Operation (RIVO) process. This is a systematic review rather than a full audit.

Has anyone received a CP05 notice after getting this code? I'm trying to figure out if the 0805 code always results in a letter or if sometimes they just release the refund without sending anything?

Code 0805 specifically indicates a manual review flag within the Return Integrity & Compliance Services (RICS) division. It's part of the pre-refund compliance check program that expanded significantly for Tax Year 2023. The IRS uses predictive analytics to flag returns, not necessarily because you did anything wrong. Returns with Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, or Education Credits are statistically more likely to receive this code. Average resolution time is 45 days from the date of the code's appearance.

This explanation is so helpful! It's like having a roadmap when you're lost in the woods. I've been stressing about my own transcript codes but understanding the process makes the waiting more bearable.
