Anyone Filed Their 2023 Taxes in March Received Their Refund Yet?
Has anyone who submitted their 1040 in March received their refund disbursement yet? This is my first time filing in the US tax system, and I'm not sure if the processing timeline I'm experiencing is normal. The IRS Where's My Refund tool shows 'still processing' status, but I'm uncertain if there are additional verification steps for non-resident filers? My return included a 1042-S form as well. Should I be concerned at this point?

I filed on March 3rd and JUST got my refund yesterday. Drove me absolutely insane waiting. I had all my documentation ready in January but my employer didn't send my W-2 until late February. Then I meticulously triple-checked everything before submitting. The IRS website kept showing that stupid "Your return is being processed" message for almost 7 weeks! I called the regular IRS number about 20 times with no luck getting through. So frustrating when you've done everything right and still have to wait forever.

Same here! Was abt to lose my mind w/ the waiting. Kept checking WMR every AM and PM like it was gonna magically change lol. Filed 3/15, got DD on 5/2. Felt like FOREVER. So relieved when it finally hit my acct!

If you're tired of waiting and need answers, here's what I recommend: 1. First, check if your 21-day standard processing window has passed 2. If yes, you need to speak with an actual IRS representative 3. Instead of wasting hours on hold, use Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) 4. They'll call the IRS and navigate the phone tree, then call you when an agent is on the line 5. Ask the agent for your specific refund status and if there are any international verification holds I used this last month when my return was stuck and discovered there was a simple verification issue they resolved in minutes. Saved me weeks of additional waiting.

I'm not entirely convinced these services are worth it... Couldn't you potentially just keep calling the IRS yourself until you get through? It might take some persistence, but I wonder if paying for something like this is really necessary? Has anyone else had success with the regular IRS lines recently?

Your situation is like being in a long security line at the airport - everyone has to go through the same basic process, but international travelers sometimes get routed to additional verification. The IRS processing system works similarly. Many March filers are just now receiving their refunds - it's like watching water come to a boil, seems to take forever until suddenly it happens! I'm impressed with how thoroughly you're tracking your submission through the proper channels.

Based on my experience with last year's filing, international returns often take 1-2 weeks longer. I found https://taxr.ai extremely helpful for decoding my transcript - it explained that code 1570 on my account meant additional review for foreign income. The tool analyzed my transcript and predicted my refund date with surprising accuracy. You might want to pull your transcript and run it through there to see what's happening behind the scenes with your specific situation.

Have you checked your tax transcript rather than just the WMR tool? With international components like Form 1042-S, the IRS often applies additional verification that doesn't show on WMR. In my analysis of processing times this year, returns filed between March 1-15 are taking exactly 42-56 days on average, while those filed March 16-31 are currently averaging 35-49 days. Did you receive a confirmation number when you filed? And have you verified if your bank information was entered correctly?

Be careful with non-resident tax returns. I've seen numerous cases where the Substantial Presence Test verification triggered an automatic Extended Review Process. These can delay refunds by 120+ days without any notification. One colleague had his return flagged by the Foreign Account Verification Protocol simply because his name format didn't match SSA records exactly. The IRS doesn't prioritize these cases because they're classified as "non-standard returns" in their Integrated Automation Processing System. I wouldn't count on that money anytime soon.

Time to take a different approach! ๐ The regular channels are moving slower than a sloth on vacation right now. Try calling the IRS International Taxpayer Service at 267-941-1000 (not the regular number). They handle specifically international filing issues and often have MUCH shorter wait times. Call early morning Eastern Time - I'm talking 7:01 AM when they open. Have your filing date, SSN/ITIN, and expected refund amount ready. Mark my calendar - you need answers ASAP before we hit the summer slowdown!

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.8.1.11.14, returns with international elements undergo Specialized Return Analysis before entering normal processing channels. Per the latest IRS Operational Guidelines (2023-24), March-filed returns with Form 1042-S typically complete processing within 6-8 weeks absent additional verification requirements. The community consensus is that non-resident returns filed in March 2024 are currently being released in batches, with many taxpayers reporting deposit dates this week and next. Your patience is warranted and expected under current IRS procedural frameworks.

Did your return include any foreign tax credits via Form 1116? I'm in a similar situation and wondering if that specific form triggers additional review cycles? My tax preparer mentioned something about FATCA compliance checks for international filers, but wasn't clear if that applies to all non-resident returns or just those with foreign financial assets above the reporting threshold?

What most people don't realize about March filings is they hit during the IRS's peak processing period. You think you're avoiding the early February rush, but you're actually landing right in the middle of their busiest time, aren't you? International returns add another layer of complexity. I've been filing with international components for years, and I've learned to expect my refund approximately 14-21 days later than the standard timeline. The 1042-S form specifically routes your return through the Specialized Processing Unit in Austin, which has been running about 3 weeks behind schedule this year based on what I've seen.
