Amended return shows negative account balance of $1,789 - What does code 291 ($2,592 tax reduction) mean for my refund status?
Finally seeing some movement on my amended return that I submitted in September 2024. Been checking my transcript religiously for months with no updates until now. The original amendment was forwarded for processing in September, then there was some internal amendment in November 2024 that I had nothing to do with. Now my transcript shows a new entry from Feb 17, 2025 with code 291 "Reduced or removed prior tax assessed" for $2,592.00. My account transcript shows: ACCOUNT BALANCE: -1,789.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Mar. 17, 2025 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Mar. 17, 2025 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): -1,789.00 My filing information shows: EXEMPTIONS: 03 FILING STATUS: Head of Household ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: 55,804.00 TAXABLE INCOME: 35,004.00 TAX PER RETURN: 3,300.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: 0.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: 0.00 TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: 0.00 RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER): Apr. 15, 2024 PROCESSING DATE: May 13, 2024 The transaction history is quite long: TRANSACTIONS CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION CYCLE DATE AMOUNT 150 Tax return filed 20241705 05-13-2024 $3,300.00 32221-450-16071-4 806 W-2 or 1099 withholding 04-15-2024 -$1,786.00 766 Credit to your account 04-15-2024 -$4,751.00 766 Credit to your account 04-15-2024 -$5,297.00 810 Refund freeze 04-25-2024 $0.00 971 Amended tax return or claim 10-14-2024 $0.00 forwarded for processing 977 Amended return filed 10-14-2024 $0.00 43277-690-02699-4 971 Amended tax return or claim 12-31-2024 $0.00 forwarded for processing 977 Amended return filed 12-31-2024 $0.00 83277-422-55125-5 767 Reduced or removed credit to your 04-15-2024 $5,297.00 account 767 Reduced or removed credit to your 04-15-2024 $4,751.00 account 766 Credit to your account 04-15-2024 -$711.00 291 Reduced or removed prior tax 03-17-2025 -$2,592.00 assessed 19254-452-05775-5 I can see there was originally a refund freeze (code 810) placed on 04-25-2024. Then I submitted my amended return which was forwarded for processing on 10-14-2024. Then somehow there was another amended return filed on 12-31-2024 that I didn't initiate. It looks like they reduced some credits earlier (the two code 767 entries for $5,297.00 and $4,751.00), but now they've reduced my tax assessed by $2,592.00 (code 291). My account balance shows -$1,789.00 but still no refund date. Can anyone tell me what this negative balance means and when I might see my refund? Does the -$1,789.00 mean I'm getting that amount back? Will they issue this automatically or do I need to call the IRS about it?

This is actually good news. The negative account balance of $1,789.00 means the IRS owes you that amount. The code 291 for $2,592.00 indicates they've reduced your tax liability based on your amendment. Let me break down what appears to have happened on your transcript: - You initially filed and had withholding and credits - Your amendment was received in September (code 977) - There was an internal IRS amendment in November (also 977) - They've adjusted your tax downward by $2,592 (code 291) - Your account now shows a credit balance of $1,789 Typically, once the 291 code appears, you should see a 846 "refund issued" code within 1-3 weeks. The system needs time to verify there are no other holds before releasing the payment. Since your update just happened on February 17, I'd expect a refund date to appear by early March if all goes smoothly. Check your transcript again in about a week - that 846 code is what you're waiting for.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! This is the first time I've ever amended so I had no idea what I was looking at. Do you know why there would be an internal amendment that I didn't initiate?

•Internal amendments (the November one) happen for several reasons - sometimes its error correction, sometimes its the IRS making adjustments based on their own review, or sometimes they're processing parts of your amendment in stages. As long as the bottom line is moving in your favor, I wouldn't worry about it too much!

•not to butt in but I had the same thing happen to me last year. The internal amendment was them breaking up my refund into parts. They sent half first then the rest later.

•That makes sense! Thanks for the input. I'm just glad to see movement after 5 months of nothing.

I was in basically the same situation - amended return, tons of waiting, cryptic codes. I started using taxr.ai and it was an absolute game changer. The tool analyzed my transcript and explained everything that was happening, when to expect my refund, and what each code meant. It gave me a super clear timeline too. It's insanely good! I use it every week now to check my status instead of playing detective with transcript codes. https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Caden Nguyen
•It does SO much more than just read the transcript. It explains each code in plain english, tells you what to expect next in your specific situation, gives you timelines, and even catches issues that might cause delays. It's like having a tax pro look at your stuff without paying those crazy fees.

•OMG I JUST TRIED THIS AND IT'S AMAZING! It explained my whole situation in 2 minutes when I've been confused for months. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this tool. It even caught a potential issue that might delay my refund that I had no idea about! 🙌

•I was skeptical too but it's not overpromising anything. It just clearly explains what's already happening with your return/transcript. The IRS system is deliberately confusing and this just translates it.

When I was waiting on my amended return I was going CRAZY trying to reach someone at the IRS to explain what was happening. After months of busy signals, I used Claimyr.com to get through to an actual human at the IRS. Talking to a real agent got my refund released within a week - they found some flag on my account that the online status would never have shown me. Absolutely worth every penny to finally get answers instead of waiting endlessly.

•100% worked for me. It schedules a callback so you don't even have to wait on hold. The agent I talked to found a flag on my account that was causing the hold up and removed it right away.

•sounds too good to be true honestly. the IRS is basically unreachable

•That's exactly why the service exists - because it's nearly impossible to reach them otherwise. In my case talking to an agent directly was the ONLY way to fix my issue. No amount of checking transcripts or WMR would have solved it.

•I used this too after spending literally 14+ hours trying to reach an agent. Best decision ever. My amendment was stuck in limbo for 7 months until I talked to someone.

The 291 code is reducing your tax liability, which is good. But watch out for that 810 code (refund freeze) from April 2024. That needs to be resolved before you'll see a refund. Did you get any letters from the IRS about verification or anything? Sometimes they need to verify your identity or income before removing that freeze.
0 coins
Chloe Green
•I didn't get any letters about verification! Should I be concerned about that 810 code? It's from when I initially filed before the amendment.

Michael Adams
•It could be that they resolved it with the amendment processing, but if you don't see an 846 code (refund issued) in the next couple weeks, you might want to call and ask specifically about that freeze code. Amended returns are notoriously slow though so it might just need more time.

I see the 766/767 codes canceling each other out. That usually happens when they're recalculating credits after an amendment. It's like they remove the original credits and then add the corrected ones. The fact that you have that 291 code with the negative account balance is a good sign that your amendment was processed in your favor and a refund is coming.

Here's the thing no one tells you: even after your account shows a credit balance, the IRS computer systems often take 1-3 WEEKS to issue the actual refund. And that's IF there are no other issues. The department that processes amended returns is chronically understaffed and they're still catching up from the pandemic backlog. Amended returns are literally the lowest priority in the system.

•This is so true. My amended return from 2022 took 14 months to process. FOURTEEN MONTHS. And then one day the money just showed up in my account with zero warning.

Consider yourself lucky, some movement is better than no movement. I amended in June 2024 and my transcript still says "received" and nothing else. No updates at all. The whole system is completely broken.

•That was my experience too until I used claimyr.com - finally got a callback from an IRS agent. It cost me a few bucks but when you're waiting on thousands in refunds its a no brainer.

The negative account balance is YOUR money waiting to come back to you! I had this same exact situation last month. My account showed a negative balance for about 10 days, then code 846 appeared with a direct deposit date. Money was in my account on that exact date. You're close!

You do realize that the govt is basically giving us an interest-free loan when they hold our money this long, right? 🤡 Imagine if we owed THEM money and took 5+ months to pay. They'd charge penalties, interest, send threatening letters... The double standard is unreal.

Emily Parker
•They actually do pay interest on delayed refunds! After 45 days from filing deadline (or filing date if you filed late), they're supposed to add interest to your refund.

•yeah at like 3% while inflation is way higher and they charge us 8%+ for underpayment. totally fair 🙄

This is the exact reason I use taxr.ai now. It analyzes my transcript automatically every week and tells me in plain english what's happening, what codes mean, and what to expect next. Last year I was totally confused trying to interpret all these codes but now it's like having a tax pro explain everything to me. The timeline predictions have been spot on too. https://taxr.ai

•No, you download your transcript from the IRS site and upload it. It analyzes all the codes, explains what they mean specific to your situation, and gives you projected dates for what will happen next. Way better than trying to google every code.

Your tax per return was $3,300 and they reduced it by $2,592, so your correct tax is $708. You had withholding of $1,786 which means your refund should be $1,078 ($1,786 - $708). That credit to your account of $711 on 4/15/24 might be a credit or deduction that was adjusted. Bottom line though, your account balance of -$1,789 should be approximately what you're getting back.

Call the IRS now that you have movement!!! I was in the same boat and after I saw that 291 code, I called and the agent was able to manually release my refund. Had it in my account 5 days later. Don't just wait for the system.

This might be a silly question 🙈 but do we have to pay taxes on the interest they add to delayed refunds??
0 coins
Mohammed Khan
•Yes! The IRS actually sends you a 1099-INT the following January for any interest they paid you. It's considered taxable income. So they tax you on the interest they pay you for holding your money too long. Peak government logic 🤦♀️

•Omg that is absolutely ridiculous 😡 So they delay our refunds for months, pay us a tiny bit of interest, and then TAX US on that interest?! Make it make sense.

I'm going through this exact thing with my 2023 return. Amended in August, just saw movement this week with the 291 code. Called the IRS (using Claimyr to get through) and they confirmed my refund is approved and should be issued within 2 weeks. Hang in there!

If you filed your amendment in October and the first update was a November internal amendment, and now you're seeing the 291 code in February... that's actually pretty quick for the IRS these days. Average processing for amended returns is 20+ weeks. At least it's moving!

•Yep, I waited 13 months for mine to process last year. The IRS is severely understaffed and amended returns are at the very bottom of the priority list.

Those removed credits (767 codes) followed by the 291 reduction probably means they adjusted down whatever credits you claimed on your original return, then reduced your tax liability based on your amendment. The net result is still positive for you with the negative account balance. Just keep watching for that magical 846 code!

Random tip: If you do see your 846 refund issued code appear, that date is usually accurate to the day for direct deposit. I've had 4 refunds (regular and amended) over the past few years and all hit my bank account exactly on the date shown on the transcript.

The timeline for amended returns this year has been ridiculous. Filed mine in July 2024, saw similar codes to yours in January 2025, and JUST got my refund last week. Almost 8 months total. But the good news is once you see that 291 code, you're in the home stretch!

Congrats on finally seeing movement! That -$1,789 account balance is definitely money coming back to you. I went through almost the exact same thing last year - amended return, months of waiting, then suddenly the 291 code appeared and boom, refund within 2-3 weeks. The internal amendment in November that you didn't initiate is totally normal - that's just the IRS processing your changes in stages. Sometimes they break down complex amendments into multiple steps on their end. One thing I learned from my experience: even though your account shows the credit balance now, keep checking your transcript weekly. You're waiting for code 846 "Refund Issued" to appear with a specific date. Once that shows up, the money will hit your account on that exact date (assuming direct deposit). The waiting is brutal but you're so close now! That 291 code is basically the IRS saying "yes, we agree with your amendment and you overpaid." Just hang tight for the 846 code to show up.

•Thank you for the encouragement! It's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same process. I've been checking my transcript obsessively but I'll try to limit it to weekly now that I know what to look for. The 846 code - that's what I need to see next, right? Just to confirm, once that appears with a date, that's when the money will actually be deposited?

You're absolutely on the right track! The negative account balance of -$1,789 is exactly what you'll be getting back as a refund. That code 291 reducing your tax by $2,592 means the IRS has accepted your amended return and adjusted your tax liability downward - which is great news! The internal amendment from November that you didn't file is completely normal. The IRS often processes complex amendments in multiple stages, so they'll create internal adjustments as they work through your changes. Nothing to worry about there. Now you're just waiting for the final step - code 846 "Refund Issued" to appear on your transcript with a specific date. Once that shows up, your money will be direct deposited on that exact date. Based on similar cases I've seen, this usually happens within 1-3 weeks after the 291 code appears. Keep checking your transcript weekly (daily checking will just drive you crazy!). After 5 months of waiting, you're finally in the home stretch. The hardest part is over - the IRS has processed your amendment and approved your refund. Now it's just a matter of the system generating that final 846 code.

•This is super helpful! I'm new to dealing with amended returns and all these codes have been so confusing. It's really reassuring to know that the -$1,789 balance is actually what I'm getting back. I was worried it meant something was wrong with my return! I'll definitely stick to checking weekly instead of daily - you're right that checking constantly just makes the waiting worse. Thank you for explaining about the 846 code too. I'll be watching for that next. After 5 months of stress and confusion, it feels amazing to finally understand what's happening and know I'm almost done with this process! 🙏
