Amended Return Filed in May - Still No Information Available

How long do it take be able get information on a amended tax return. I filled it in may, still isn't showing any information. This isn't my first rodeo with the IRS, but I've never had an amended return take this long before. Last time I amended (back in 2021), I could at least see it was received within a couple weeks. My wife's military transfer is coming up, and we were counting on this adjustment for the move. Starting to get concerned since we're now 4+ months in with zero visibility.

According to the IRS website (which I just checked), amended returns are currently taking 20+ weeks to process. That's just processing time, not counting when it actually shows up in their system. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool is notoriously slow to update - sometimes it doesn't show anything until they've actually completed processing. I went through this last year and didn't see anything on WMAR for almost 3 months, then suddenly it appeared with "received" status.

Have you tried calling the IRS directly? What's even the point of their online tools if they don't actually show accurate information? I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) last month when I couldn't get through on the regular IRS line - had been trying for days with no luck. They got me connected to an agent who confirmed my amended return was in the system even though the website showed nothing. Apparently there's a huge backlog right now?

Is this Claimyr service actually legitimate? I'm hesitant to use third-party services when dealing with something as sensitive as tax information. Has anyone else verified that this works without compromising personal data?

I was skeptical at first too, but I actually used Claimyr back in March when dealing with a similar amended return situation. They don't access your tax info - they just connect you to the IRS phone line by navigating the phone tree for you. Saved me about 2 hours of hold time. The agent I spoke with confirmed my amended return from January was in the system even though WMAR showed nothing.

Here's what you need to know about amended returns for 2024: 1. Processing time is currently 20+ weeks (not business days, actual weeks) 2. WMAR tool often doesn't update until processing is nearly complete 3. Paper amended returns take even longer than e-filed ones 4. If you filed in May, you're looking at October/November timeframe 5. Military families can request expedited processing by calling and explaining the PCS situation Don't panic yet - the system is just incredibly slow right now.

This is spot on. Had an amended return last yr that took forever to show up in the system. WMAR showed zilch for like 16 wks then suddenly updated all at once. IRS is super backed up w/ these. If ur military, def mention that when u call - they sometimes have special procedures for active duty fams.

The IRS amended return tracking system is fundamentally broken right now. I've been dealing with this exact issue with a 1040-X filed in April. After weeks of frustration, I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript - it showed my amended return was actually in the system despite WMAR showing nothing. The tool decoded the transaction codes on my account transcript that indicated the amendment was received but hadn't been assigned to a processing queue yet. Might be worth checking your transcript rather than relying on WMAR.

Have you tried pulling your tax transcripts instead of using WMAR? On July 12th, I discovered my amended return (filed March 15th) was visible on my account transcript even though WMAR showed nothing. Look specifically for Transaction Code 971 with an amended return reference. You can request these online at irs.gov/transcripts if you have ID.me verification set up. The processing date on the transcript is usually more accurate than anything WMAR shows.

I went through this exact situation last year. Filed an amended return in April 2023, and it didn't show up on the WMAR tool until August. Even then, it just said "received." The actual processing took until November. When I called, the agent told me they were prioritizing regular returns over amended ones. Did you e-file or send a paper amendment? Paper ones are taking substantially longer in my experience.

Think of amended returns like checking luggage on an overbooked flight - they're the first things to get bumped when the system is overloaded. I finally got my amended refund last month after filing in February! The IRS is like a massive cargo ship that takes miles to change direction - once your return is in the system, it will eventually get processed, but patience is definitely required. The good news is that they do pay interest on refunds delayed beyond 45 days, so there's a small silver lining to the wait.

OMG I'm going through this EXACT thing right now! Filed my amendment in April and still nothing showing up! 😫 I've been checking every single day because I really need that money for medical bills. This thread is actually making me feel a little better knowing I'm not alone. Does anyone know if calling them actually helps speed things up at all? I'm so stressed about this!

I feel your pain! I'm dealing with something similar - filed my amended return in June and it's been radio silence ever since. The waiting is the worst part, especially when you're counting on that money. From what I've learned lurking in tax forums, calling doesn't actually speed up processing, but it can at least confirm your return is in their system. The IRS phone agents can see things that don't show up on WMAR yet. One thing that helped my anxiety was setting up IRS account online and checking my transcript monthly instead of obsessively checking WMAR daily. At least then you're looking at the actual source data rather than their wonky tracking tool. Hang in there - sounds like we're all in the same boat waiting for this glacier-slow system to catch up!

I'm in a similar situation - filed my amended return in June and still showing nothing on WMAR. What's really frustrating is that I called the IRS three times and got three different answers about processing times. One agent said 16 weeks, another said 20+ weeks, and the third couldn't even find my return in their system at all. The lack of consistency is almost worse than the wait itself. I've started checking my account transcript weekly like others suggested, but even that feels like reading hieroglyphics half the time. Has anyone had luck with the taxpayer advocate service for amended returns, or is that just another dead end? At this point I'm wondering if I should just assume it'll arrive sometime before next tax season and try to forget about it.

I totally feel your frustration with the inconsistent answers from IRS agents! I'm dealing with something similar - filed my amendment in March and got completely different timelines from different reps. The Taxpayer Advocate Service can help, but they typically only get involved if you can show economic hardship or if it's been significantly longer than normal processing times. Since amended returns are taking 20+ weeks right now, they might not consider a June filing as "unreasonably delayed" until around November. That said, it's worth a shot if the money is causing real financial stress - they have helped people I know get priority processing in genuine hardship situations.

I'm dealing with almost the exact same timeline - filed my amended return in late May and absolutely nothing showing up anywhere. Reading through everyone's experiences here is honestly both reassuring and terrifying at the same time! What's really getting to me is that I can't even confirm they received it. At least with regular returns you get some kind of acknowledgment. With amendments, it's like throwing paperwork into a black hole and hoping for the best. I've been checking WMAR obsessively (probably not healthy) and considering calling, but it sounds like even that might not give me concrete answers. The military transfer situation mentioned in the original post really hits home - sometimes these refunds aren't just "nice to have" money, they're actually needed for real life situations. Has anyone here had success getting expedited processing for legitimate hardship reasons, or is that more myth than reality? Trying to decide if it's worth the hassle of explaining my situation to an IRS agent who might not even be able to help.
