Amended Return Filed 2/16 - Just Got DDD - Check or Direct Deposit?

So I just checked my transcript this morning and finally got a DDD for an amended return I submitted on 2/16/24. When I was stationed in Germany a few years back, they messed up our housing allowances and I had to file amendments then too. This time it's for a missed education credit from when my spouse was taking classes while I was deployed. Anyone know if the refund will come as a check or direct deposit? I've been hearing different things from different people in my unit. My buddy swears amended returns only come as paper checks, but I'm hoping that's not true since we're about to PCS and mail forwarding is always a mess. Has anyone here received their amended return refund via direct deposit recently?

I've been in your shoes... waiting for an amended return is so stressful when you're counting on that money. From my understanding, the IRS typically sends amended return refunds as paper checks, even if you provided direct deposit information. I think it's a security measure they take with amendments specifically. I waited about 16 weeks for mine last year, and it came as a check despite having direct deposit info on file. Just make sure your address is updated with USPS before you move, and maybe set up informed delivery so you know when it's coming.

This matches what happened with my amended return from last year too. Got a paper check in the mail about 3 weeks after seeing the DDD on my transcript. Wasn't expecting it that way since my original refund came by direct deposit.

Is there any way to update the delivery method at this point? Once you see the DDD on your transcript, can you call the IRS and request direct deposit instead of a paper check? I'm concerned about the 846 code implications if the refund method is already determined.

So does this mean there's absolutely no chance of getting direct deposit for an amended return? Or are there exceptions?

What happens if the check gets lost in the mail during a PCS move? Does the IRS have any special procedures for military families who are relocating? I'm worried about the same thing happening to me.

According to the most recent IRS procedures updated on January 12, 2024, amended returns processed after March 1, 2024 can receive direct deposit if you included your banking information on Form 8888 with your amended return. If you didn't include Form 8888 or didn't provide banking details on your 1040-X, you'll receive a paper check. I processed my own amended return on February 28, 2024, and received direct deposit on April 15, 2024, so it is definitely possible under the right circumstances.

Thanks for this info. Very helpful. Didn't know about Form 8888 requirement. Will remember for next time.

This is much more promising than what I experienced in 2022 when I amended my return. Back then, it was checks only no matter what. Good to see the IRS finally updating their systems to handle direct deposits for amendments. Makes me wonder what other processes they've improved that we don't know about yet.

Omg I feel ur pain! Been there w/ amended returns b4 - such a headache! 😩 Called the IRS like 20x last yr when my amended refund was MIA. Busy signals 4ever! Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get thru to an actual human after waiting 2 months. The agent confirmed my paper check was already mailed but got lost somewhere. They reissued it that same day. Tbh I was super skeptical about paying for a service to call the IRS, but when ur desperate and PCSing soon... worth every penny not to spend hours on hold! Just saying if u need to track down where ur refund is actually at.

Per Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6.4.7.1 (revised 2023), amended return refunds are generally issued as paper checks unless specific conditions are met. The determination is made during processing and depends on several factors including whether you submitted Form 8888 with your amendment. If your transcript shows TC 846 with a DDD, the decision has already been made regarding payment method. Military families under PCS orders can request expedited processing by noting this on the amendment, but this doesn't change the payment method. In my experience as a tax professional, approximately 87% of amended returns still result in paper checks despite the IRS's stated intention to expand direct deposit options.

I'm SO EXCITED to share that I actually did receive my amended return via direct deposit last month! I was shocked because everything online said it would be a check. The key difference was that I had included my banking information directly on the 1040-X form in the explanation section AND I attached a separate note requesting direct deposit due to frequent moves as a military family. I can't guarantee it will work for everyone, but it's worth checking your bank account on your DDD date just in case! The relief I felt when that money appeared in my account instead of waiting for a check was incredible.

Think of amended return refunds like ordering a custom cake - they're handled differently than the pre-made ones in the display case. I received my amended return DDD in March, and like clockwork, a paper check arrived in my mailbox about 7 days later. Not a single penny went to my bank account, even though my original return was direct deposited. It's like the IRS is still living in the stone age for certain processes! I'd strongly recommend setting up mail forwarding ASAP, and maybe even having a trusted neighbor check your mailbox if you're moving soon. The last thing you want is your check sitting in a mailbox while you're halfway across the country moving to your new duty station.
