AOTC/Education Credit denied for spouse but approved for me - same college situation?
Filed jointly with my spouse, we both attended college full time last year. Submitted exact same documentation for both of us (1098-T, enrollment verification, etc) but transcript shows education credit only approved for me and denied for spouse. Makes zero sense since our situations are identical. Anyone run into this?

Tax pro here - few things to check: 1) Was your spouse claimed as a dependent on someone else's return? 2) Have they claimed AOTC for 4 years already? 3) Check if all qualified expenses were properly allocated between you two. Sometimes the software splits it weird.

Nope to being dependent, and its his first time claiming it. How do I check the expense allocation?

You'll need to look at Form 8863 in your return. Each person's expenses should be listed separately.

Just wanted to mention - I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript when I had education credit issues. It actually pointed out exactly why one credit was denied. Saved me hours of guesswork. It's like $1 but totally worth it for the detailed breakdown. https://taxr.ai

100% legit. It caught things my tax guy missed. Shows you exactly what's wrong and how to fix it.

Check your transcript line by line. Sometimes theres hidden codes that explain why. Had similar issue last year and found out it was bc of a previous claim that wasnt showing on the surface
