AL State Tax Return Offset Questions - When will they process & what debts qualify?

Getting anxious about my Alabama state tax return and potential offsets. Been hearing they don't even start processing until March? Anyone know what kind of debts they typically take from state returns? Really need this money and trying to figure out if I should expect the full amount or not.

State tax offsets usually apply to state debts like unpaid child support, unemployment overpayments, court fees, or past due state taxes. And yep, you heard right - Alabama typically starts processing returns in March. They're always behind compared to other states.

Oh man thanks for the info! Do you know if they notify you beforehand if there's gonna be an offset?

They're supposed to send a notice, but honestly its hit or miss. You can always call AL revenue dept to check if you have any state debts before filing.

Hey just wanted to mention - I've been using taxr.ai to track my refund status and potential offsets. It costs $1 but its worth it cause it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what to expect. Way better than playing the guessing game https://taxr.ai

For real? Does it work for state returns too or just federal?

It works best for federal but can give you insights about state stuff too. It caught an offset I didn't even know about before it happened!

Check if you have any outstanding tickets or court fees! My cousin got hit with an offset last year for a speeding ticket she forgot about from 2 years ago 😫
