File 2022 separately. No amendments needed. Each tax year stands alone. Use tax software that handles prior years. Print and mail if necessary. Include your notice number. Keep copies of everything. Expect 6-8 weeks processing time. Your 2023 refund will be released after 2022 is processed. No further action needed typically.
I just went through this! The process is actually pretty straightforward: ⢠You need to file 2022 as a completely separate return ⢠You CANNOT amend your 2023 return to include 2022 information ⢠The IRS processes each tax year independently ⢠Once your 2022 return is processed, they should automatically release your 2023 refund ⢠You might need to pay a late filing penalty for 2022, even if you're due a refund I had no idea the IRS automatically held current refunds for unfiled prior years! The tax system is way more interconnected than I realized.
When this happened to me, I spent 3 days trying to get through to the IRS on their regular number. Complete waste of time. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 30 minutes. The agent told me exactly what was flagged in my return and I was able to resolve it that same day by faxing one document. Saved me weeks of anxiety and waiting.
Thank you! I've been trying to call but keep getting disconnected. Might try this service if I don't hear anything by next week.
Check your transcript online if you can. It often shows more detailed information than WMR. Look for specific codes like 570/971 which indicate what type of review they're doing.
I... I think I might try calling that number tomorrow. I filed on February 1st with both EITC and CTC and still nothing. My rent is due in 5 days and I was really, really counting on this refund. Maybe if I call early, around 7:00 AM when they first open, I might have better luck getting through? Every day I check WMR and still just one bar... it's making me so anxious I can barely sleep.
According to the official IRS.gov updates and several tax professional forums I follow, there was indeed a processing delay for EITC/CTC returns this year. The IRS systems were updated on February 18th to begin releasing these refunds, but they're being processed in batches. If you check the r/IRS subreddit or the Facebook tax groups, many people who filed early February are just now seeing deposits this week. The IRS2Go app sometimes updates before the website version of WMR, so that might be worth checking too.
Haha, I've become such a pro at checking all the IRS tools that I should put it on my resume! š Can confirm what you're saying - filed Feb 2nd and my transcript just updated yesterday with a DDD of 3/27. The funny thing is my WMR still shows one bar even though my money is supposedly coming next week. The IRS systems communicate about as well as my in-laws at Thanksgiving dinner.
Did you notice any specific pattern with the transcript updates? Mine has been showing N/A for 2023 return transcript for weeks now. I filed on February 5th with EITC and I'm trying to figure out if there's a specific day of the week when they typically update the system.
The IRS API endpoints that power the WMR interface frequently experience latency issues during peak processing periods. This temporal inaccessibility doesn't necessarily indicate a problem with your return's adjudication status. I encountered identical authentication rejection parameters approximately 72 hours ago, yet my deposit materialized this morning without any interim status updates becoming available.
Same thing happened to me yesterday. I tried everything - different browsers, cleared cache, even used my wife's phone. Nothing worked. Then this morning it's back to normal showing my refund is still processing. The IRS systems are just a mess right now with tax season in full swing. Don't waste your time trying to fix it - it's definitely on their end.

Got thru to the IRS last month for my penalty abatement! Here's what worked: - Called the # on my notice (not the main IRS #) - Used phone menu option for "payment questions" not "tax help" - Called at 8:15am ET on a Tues (mid-week is less busy) - Had my notice, SSN, filing status, and tax return ready - Agent took about 10 mins to review my history - Approved on the spot! Confirmation letter arrived 2 wks later Def worth the effort - saved almost $300 in penalties. Good luck!

Had this exact situation last semester. Here's what worked for me: ⢠Tried calling for 2 weeks with no success ⢠Used the "Contact Us" option on IRS.gov (limited but better than nothing) ⢠Submitted Form 843 by certified mail as backup ⢠Found alternate number: 800-829-0922 (sometimes less busy) ⢠Finally got through using Practitioner Priority Service trick The agent confirmed I qualified for First Time Abatement since: ⢠No penalties in prior 3 years ⢠Good history of filing on time before ⢠Current year taxes were fully paid, just filed late They removed the penalty completely during the call!
