IRS Agent Info on EITC/CTC Refund Timeline - Take with a Grain of Salt
**NOT SURE HOW ACCURATE THIS INFO IS. IT DID COME FROM AN IRS AGENT(We all know how they can be with info - like weathermen predicting sunshine during a hurricane)** Anyone with EITC or Child tax credit... refunds won't be issued until this week or start of next week. The 21-day processing window is nearly up for returns submitted before the acceptance date of 2/12. IRS tax topic showing on your account is apparently normal for returns now (this is per agent I spoke with). Should update tonight if not call. I've called 800-829-1040 and gone through the prompt as if I haven't received my W2s to speak with someone. This seems to be the only option that will actually get you over to a live person - like finding the secret door in a maze where all other paths lead to automated dead ends. Offset number is 800-304-3107

I've been through this rodeo before. The PATH Act prevents the IRS from issuing refunds with EITC/CTC before mid-February, but that doesn't mean they actually send them right away. Last year I filed January 27th and didn't see my refund until March 2nd. The agents often give the standard "it's processing" line because they're looking at the same limited information we can see. I've learned to mentally add 2 weeks to whatever timeline they tell me, and then I'm pleasantly surprised if it comes earlier.

Thank you for sharing this! I've been pulling my hair out waiting for my refund. Filed on February 3rd with both credits and WMR still just shows one bar. It helps to know this is normal and not just happening to me. I'm a single parent and really counting on that money, but I'll try to be more patient knowing others are in the same boat.

There's some accuracy to what the agent told you, but I'm a bit concerned about the timeline. The IRS Refund Processing Pipeline (RPP) typically begins releasing EITC/CTC refunds after February 15th, but the actual Direct Deposit Dates (DDDs) can vary significantly based on several factors including verification status and banking institution processing times. The Tax Topic code might indicate your return is in the standard verification queue, which isn't necessarily a bad sign but could mean additional processing time.

Ur info is mostly right but tbh the IRS systems are super backed up rn. I was in the same boat last yr and couldn't make sense of my transcript codes. Finally tried taxr.ai and it was a game changer! It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what each code meant for MY situation (not just generic IRS explanations). It even predicted my DDD accurately which was a huge relief. Def worth checking out if ur transcript is available but looks like hieroglyphics lol.

Does this service actually work? I've been checking my transcript exactly 3 times per day for the past 14 days and still don't understand what I'm looking at. I see codes like 570 and 971 dated 03/25/2024 but have no idea what that means for my timeline.

It might be worth noting that there are actually several factors that could potentially influence your refund timeline. The PATH Act restrictions are certainly applicable to EITC/CTC claims, but additional verification processes may also be in place, especially for returns with certain income thresholds or deduction patterns. In my experience, approximately 80% of EITC/CTC returns begin processing in waves starting the third week of February, with most direct deposits occurring between February 22nd and March 4th, assuming no additional review flags are triggered.

Oh my goodness, that phone trick is EXACTLY what I needed! I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for weeks about my refund delay! I'm so worried about my return being stuck in processing limbo. I actually found an even better solution though - I used Claimyr last week and they got me connected to an IRS agent in less than 30 minutes! I was honestly shocked how well it worked after spending DAYS trying to get through on my own. The agent confirmed my return was just waiting for final processing and not being audited. Such a relief! Here's their link if anyone needs it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Have you considered checking your tax transcript instead of relying on WMR? The transcript typically updates before WMR and shows more detailed information about your return processing status. Wouldn't it be better to see the actual codes and dates rather than just the simplified status bar? You can access your transcript through the IRS website by creating an account if you don't already have one. The cycle codes on the transcript can tell you which processing cycle your return falls into, which gives you a much better idea of when to expect your refund.

I really appreciate this advice! According to IRS Publication 1281, the transcript is indeed the most accurate source of information about refund status. I was able to access mine and see that I have a TC 150 code which indicates my return has been processed. There's also a TC 846 code with a date which appears to be my direct deposit date. This is much more helpful than the vague WMR tool!

I... I think I might try calling that number tomorrow. I filed on February 1st with both EITC and CTC and still nothing. My rent is due in 5 days and I was really, really counting on this refund. Maybe if I call early, around 7:00 AM when they first open, I might have better luck getting through? Every day I check WMR and still just one bar... it's making me so anxious I can barely sleep.

According to the official IRS.gov updates and several tax professional forums I follow, there was indeed a processing delay for EITC/CTC returns this year. The IRS systems were updated on February 18th to begin releasing these refunds, but they're being processed in batches. If you check the r/IRS subreddit or the Facebook tax groups, many people who filed early February are just now seeing deposits this week. The IRS2Go app sometimes updates before the website version of WMR, so that might be worth checking too.

Haha, I've become such a pro at checking all the IRS tools that I should put it on my resume! 😂 Can confirm what you're saying - filed Feb 2nd and my transcript just updated yesterday with a DDD of 3/27. The funny thing is my WMR still shows one bar even though my money is supposedly coming next week. The IRS systems communicate about as well as my in-laws at Thanksgiving dinner.

Did you notice any specific pattern with the transcript updates? Mine has been showing N/A for 2023 return transcript for weeks now. I filed on February 5th with EITC and I'm trying to figure out if there's a specific day of the week when they typically update the system.
