How to calculate unemployment benefits with severance pay? (IDES help needed)
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out how to calculate my unemployment benefits. I know it's based on my earnings from the last four quarters, but I'm not sure how to do the math. Does anyone have experience with this? Also, I got some severance pay when I was laid off - does that affect my benefits? Any help would be appreciated!

I went through this recently! Here's a breakdown of how it usually works: • Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) is typically about 50% of your average weekly wage • They look at your highest-earning quarter in the last 4 quarters • There's usually a minimum and maximum WBA set by the state • Severance can affect your benefits, but it depends on how it's paid out You'll need to report your severance when you file. If it's paid as a lump sum, it might delay when you can start claiming. If it's paid out over time, it could reduce your weekly benefit. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

•Wow, thanks so much for the detailed explanation! This really helps clear things up. Do you know if there's a way to estimate my WBA before I apply?

•Glad I could help! Most states have benefit calculators on their unemployment websites. Just google '[your state] unemployment benefit calculator' and you should find it. It'll give you a rough estimate 👍

•This is great info! Quick question - does overtime pay count towards the average weekly wage calculation?

•Yep, overtime is usually included in your wage calculations. They typically look at your total earnings, not just base pay. So those extra hours can actually boost your benefits! 💪

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

•I was skeptical too, but it really worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. I think they're a legit business, not some scam.

•I get that, but for me it was worth it to finally get answers. Beats losing a whole day on hold or getting conflicting info online.

Has anyone had experience with appealing a benefit amount? I think they calculated mine wrong but I'm not sure how to prove it.

•I appealed mine last year. You need to gather all your pay stubs and tax docs. There should be an appeal form on your state's unemployment website. Fill it out and attach copies of everything. It took a few weeks but they did adjust mine up.

Pro tip: if u have irregular income (like sales commissions or seasonal work), make sure to emphasize your highest-earning quarters when u file. It can make a big difference in ur benefit amount!

•Oh that's good to know! My income does vary quite a bit. I'll definitely keep that in mind when I'm filing.

Anyone know if gig work (like Uber or DoorDash) affects unemployment eligibility? I've been doing some deliveries to make ends meet while job hunting.

•It can affect your weekly claim, but not necessarily your overall eligibility. You have to report any income you earn each week, and if it's over a certain amount, it'll reduce your benefit for that week. But it won't disqualify you completely.

•Ah ok, that makes sense. So I should still apply even tho I'm doing some gig work? And just report the earnings each week?

•Exactly! Always better to apply and be honest about your situation. They'll determine your eligibility and guide you on reporting.

Just went through this process myself! A few things to add that might help: For severance pay - the key thing is HOW it's structured. If your employer calls it "severance in lieu of notice," it might be treated differently than regular severance. Also, some states have a "severance deduction period" where they calculate how many weeks your lump sum would cover at your regular salary, and you can't claim benefits during that time. One thing that caught me off guard: if you worked in multiple states during your base period, you might need to file an interstate claim. It gets complicated but can sometimes work in your favor if one state has higher benefit rates. Also, keep ALL your documentation - pay stubs, termination letter, severance agreement, everything. The system might seem automated but there's a good chance you'll need to provide proof of your earnings at some point. Good luck with your claim! The process is frustrating but hang in there 💪
