DEO work search requirements when I have a guaranteed return-to-work date - what to do?

I'm currently on Florida unemployment and just got an email saying work search requirements are coming back next month. My situation is tricky - I was temporarily laid off from my hotel management position, but my boss confirmed I'll be rehired in about 6-8 weeks when they complete renovations. I can't commit to another permanent job since I already know I'm going back to my old position soon. Do I still need to do the 5 work searches per week? How do I handle this with DEO? Has anyone been in a similar situation with a guaranteed return date?

It's specifically for situations like yours where your employer has given you a definite rehire date. Log into CONNECT, go to your dashboard, and look for 'Request Work Search Waiver' under the 'Manage My Benefits' section. You'll need to enter your expected return date and your employer's contact info. DEO will verify this with them. If approved, you'll be exempt from the work search requirements but still need to claim your weeks normally.

You should both check if your employers filed a "partial claim" for you. My company did that for our furlough and it meant I didn't have to do the job searches. Check with your HR department!

Be careful with this!!! I was in a similar situation last year and thought I would be returning to my restaurant job in 2 months, but the DEO rejected my waiver request because they said 2 months was too long for a return-to-work exemption. They want OFFICIAL documentation from your employer stating the EXACT return date, not just a verbal promise. To add to what others have said, you should know that Florida DEO has very specific rules for return-to-work exemptions: 1. Your employer must confirm the return date is within 8 weeks 2. The employer must provide this in writing on company letterhead 3. You must upload this documentation to your CONNECT account 4. You still need to claim your weeks as normal and answer "yes" when asked if you have a return date If your return date is more than 8 weeks away, you will need to complete work searches regardless of having a job to return to. The system will automatically check if your return date falls within the exemption timeframe.

ok so nobody is mentioning another option... you can technically still do work searches even if you know you're going back to your old job. just apply to positions you know you won't get or that have schedules that wouldn't work for you. i did this for 3 weeks before going back to my teaching position. applied for jobs requiring skills i don't have lol. DEO doesn't check if you're applying in good faith, just that you did the searches.

I would strongly advise against this approach. While DEO may not check every application, deliberately applying for jobs you have no intention of accepting could be considered fraud. If they conduct a random audit of your work search efforts (which they do periodically), you could face serious consequences including having to repay benefits with penalties. When I applied for mine last year, it took about 5-7 business days to get approved. Make sure to continue doing your work searches until you actually see the exemption approval in your CONNECT account. Better safe than sorry!
