Do furloughed employees have to look for work while on Washington ESD unemployment?

I got furloughed from my job at a manufacturing company last month and they said they'll bring me back when business picks up, probably in 6-8 weeks. I'm collecting unemployment through Washington ESD right now but I'm confused about the job search requirements. Do I still need to do the 3 job search activities per week since I technically still have a job to go back to? The WorkSource website isn't clear about this situation and I don't want to mess up my benefits.

Yes, you still need to meet the job search requirements even if you're on furlough. Washington ESD doesn't distinguish between furloughed and laid off workers for job search purposes. You need to complete 3 job search activities per week and log them in your WorkSourceWA account.

That seems weird since I have a job to go back to. What counts as a job search activity in this case?

Job applications, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews, or even workshops on WorkSourceWA all count. The system treats furlough as temporary unemployment, so all regular UI rules apply.

I was furloughed last year and tried to get clarification on this from Washington ESD. Spent hours on hold and never got through to anyone. Super frustrating when you just need a simple answer about whether you need to job search.

Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without waiting on hold. My cousin used it when she had questions about her adjudication and got through in like 10 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and the site is claimyr.com.

Never heard of that but will definitely check it out. Getting through to Washington ESD is impossible otherwise.

The job search requirement applies to ALL unemployment claimants in Washington state, regardless of whether you're on temporary layoff, furlough, or permanent separation. The only exceptions are for standby status (which is different from furlough) or if you're in an approved training program.

What's the difference between furlough and standby status? I thought they were the same thing.

Standby is when your employer files paperwork with Washington ESD indicating you'll be recalled within a specific timeframe, usually 4-6 weeks. Furlough is just when your company temporarily reduces your hours to zero but you're still technically employed. Most furloughs don't qualify for standby status.

My employer didn't file any special paperwork with Washington ESD, so I guess I'm just regular unemployment even though they said furlough.

this is so confusing why do they make it so complicated?? i got furloughed too and have been doing job searches but it feels pointless when i know im going back to my old job

0 coins

I know it seems pointless but you have to do it to keep your benefits. Think of it as keeping your skills sharp or maybe you'll find something better than your old job!

yeah i guess that makes sense but still annoying to have to apply for jobs i dont want

Been through this before - the job search requirement is non-negotiable. I skipped it for a couple weeks thinking my furlough was different and Washington ESD flagged my claim. Had to do a phone interview to explain and it was a nightmare. Just do the 3 activities per week and document everything.

0 coins

What happened when they flagged your claim? Did you lose benefits?

0 coins

They put my claim on hold for 2 weeks while they investigated. I had to provide documentation showing I was looking for work and explain why I hadn't been doing it properly. Got my benefits back but it delayed payments.

This is exactly why I use Claimyr now when I need to talk to Washington ESD about anything. Much easier than dealing with their phone system when there's a problem.

The whole system is ridiculous. They want you to look for work when you already have a job waiting for you. Makes no sense from a policy standpoint.

I understand the frustration but the policy exists because many 'temporary' layoffs become permanent. The job search requirement ensures people are prepared if their recall doesn't happen.

Still stupid if you ask me. Waste of everyone's time.

I'm a WorkSource partner and see this question all the time. Furloughed workers must complete job search activities just like any other claimant. The good news is that WorkSourceWA has lots of online activities that count - workshops, assessments, career exploration tools. You don't have to only apply for jobs.

0 coins

That's helpful! I've been only doing job applications but workshops sound easier. Do those really count toward the 3 weekly activities?

0 coins

Yes, workshops and other career development activities count. Just make sure you're logging them correctly in WorkSourceWA and they're substantial activities, not just browsing the site.

This is good info. I've been stressed about applying for jobs I don't want when I know I'm going back to work soon.

Wait, so if my company said I'm furloughed for 2 months, I still have to look for work the entire time? That doesn't make sense. What if I find another job and then my company calls me back?

You're not required to take a job you find while on furlough if your recall date is within 4 weeks. But yes, you still need to search and be available for work to maintain UI eligibility.

This is all so confusing. I wish Washington ESD would explain this stuff better on their website.

Same boat here - furloughed from airline industry. Been doing my job searches but it's weird applying for jobs in completely different fields when I know I'm going back to my airline job. Just treat it like busy work and get through it.

0 coins

How do you handle applying for jobs that require different skills? Do you just apply anyway?

0 coins

I focus on transferable skills or entry-level positions in fields I'm curious about. At least then I'm learning something even if I don't get the job.

I tried to get clarification on this from Washington ESD about my furlough situation and never could get through. The phone system is terrible. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got my answer in minutes. Worth every penny when you need actual help.

0 coins

How much does Claimyr cost? I'm barely making ends meet on unemployment.

They don't publish pricing but it's reasonable for getting through to Washington ESD when you really need help. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see how it works.

Bottom line - if you're collecting unemployment benefits in Washington, you must meet job search requirements regardless of your employment status. Furlough, layoff, doesn't matter. 3 activities per week, properly documented, or risk losing benefits.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for the clarification. I'll keep doing my job searches and logging them properly. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

0 coins

Smart move. They're pretty strict about enforcement these days.

0 coins

My friend thought she didn't need to job search during furlough and got her benefits cut off. Had to appeal and everything. Don't risk it - just do the searches.

Appeals take forever too. Much easier to just follow the rules from the start.

0 coins

Definitely not worth the risk. I'll stick to the job search requirements.

0 coins

Been furloughed twice in the last 3 years and learned this the hard way. Washington ESD doesn't care about your employment status - if you're claiming benefits, you follow all the rules. Period.

Yep, learned the same lesson. They're not flexible about exceptions.

Got it. Thanks for sharing your experience.
