DEO 'Benefit Charging' issue keeping my payments on hold - finally got answers after 4 hour call

Just spent almost 4 hours on the phone with DEO about this frustrating 'Benefit Charging' issue that's been holding up my claim. Apparently they never received documentation I DEFINITELY submitted explaining my job separation (classic DEO move). The agent made me go through the whole story again, asking 20 questions, then said it was 'completed' BUT could still take weeks to resolve. Then gave me this whole lecture about employer rights and how they could take 30 days to respond plus appeals time. He kept blaming delays on hurricane and tornado backlog. When I pressed for an EXACT timeline, he eventually admitted employers have until September 17th to respond, and if they don't by the 18th, my funds should be released. BUT I need 4 weeks claimed first (just finished that today). The agent kept telling me unemployment shouldn't be a backup plan and I need alternatives. I said that's literally why the system exists and employers pay into it! Told him when Florida requires employers to give 2 weeks termination notice, maybe we'll have time to make backup plans. Asked what his backup plan was - he mumbled something about saving money. This state is unbelievable. Looking for work outside Florida at this point.

They told me the EXACT same BS about the 'Benefit Charging' issue last month!!! I waited the full 30 days they said the employer had to respond, then called back and they tried to tell me it needed MORE time! Had to fight with a supervisor to get my payments. It's like they're trained to give you the runaround hoping you'll just give up. The system is DESIGNED to be frustrating.

Omg this is exactly what I was afraid of! Did you have to call back multiple times? I'm marking 9/18 on my calendar but fully expecting more excuses. Did they eventually release your funds?

The agent actually gave you correct information about the employer response timeline. They do have up to 30 days to respond to the separation information request, and the "Benefit Charging" issue is related to determining which employer's account will be charged for your benefits. A few tips that might help: 1. Document every call - date, time, agent name if possible 2. Check your CONNECT inbox daily for any fact-finding questionnaires 3. Make sure you're completing all work searches correctly (5 per week) 4. If September 18th comes and the issue isn't resolved, specifically ask for a supervisor The system is frustrating but there are procedures they have to follow legally. Hang in there!

Thanks for the clear explanation! I'm documenting everything from now on. Do you know if I'll receive backpay for all these weeks once it's resolved? I've claimed 4 weeks total now.

lol I love that u asked the agent about HIS backup plan... bet he wasnt expecting that one haha! DEO is the WORST, took me 3 months to get my first payment last year and the stories they tell u change with every agent. hang in there!

He was definitely caught off guard by that question 😂 It's just so frustrating when they lecture you about having backup plans when the whole system is designed to BE the backup plan!

I was stuck with that exact same issue for almost 6 weeks. After getting nowhere with regular calls, I finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual agent without the hours of waiting. The video demo (https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj) shows how it works. Got through in about 20 minutes instead of hours, and the agent was able to expedite my Benefit Charging issue since it had been pending beyond the normal timeframe. Might be worth trying if you hit that September 18th date and nothing happens.

Does that service actually work? I'm skeptical of anything claiming to help with DEO because I've been burned before. Has anyone else used this?

Yeah, I was skeptical too until I tried it. The difference is they don't claim to fix your issues - they just get you connected to a real DEO agent faster. Still had to discuss my case with the DEO rep once connected, but saved me hours of redial hell.

Ugh all these agents act like were trying to scam the system or something! I was laid off after 7 YEARS at my company and the DEO rep had the nerve to lecture me about "finding work quickly" like I'm not trying??? Anyone else notice they're way worse since the pandemic ended?

YES! The guy literally acted like I was trying to game the system somehow. I worked and paid taxes for 12 years straight. I'm entitled to these benefits!

i had issue with benefit charging too and my employer never responded. it DID actually clear automatically after 30 days just like they said. so theres hope! but yeah keep calling and be annoying thats the only way to get anywhere with florida deo tbh. also make SURE you're doing your work searches exactly right, they'll use any excuse to deny u

That's actually really encouraging to hear. I've been super careful with my work searches - documenting everything with screenshots just in case.

wait what's benefit charging?? is that different from adjudication?? i'm confused bc i have a pending adjudication issue but i don't see anything about charging

They're different issues. Benefit Charging determines which employer's account gets charged for your benefits (important if you had multiple employers). Adjudication is the process of investigating any potential eligibility issues. Both can hold up payments, but they're separate processes in the system.

september 17th seems like a really specific date. did the agent actually check something or just making it up to get you off the phone? when i had this problem they just kept saying "a few more weeks" every time i called 🙄

He put me on hold for like 10 minutes to check something in the system, so I *think* he actually looked it up... but who knows with DEO. I'm skeptical about everything they tell me at this point.

One important thing to note - even after the employer response deadline passes, DEO still has to process that information and make a determination. So while September 18th is when you can start pushing harder, don't be surprised if there's still a few days of processing time needed after that. Also, make sure you continue claiming weeks without interruption, even while waiting for the issue to resolve. If you're eligible, you'll receive all back weeks once the determination is made.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely keep claiming weeks. This whole process feels designed to make people give up.

I'm dealing with this exact same "Benefit Charging" nightmare right now! Been waiting 3 weeks already and getting the same runaround from different agents every time I call. One told me 10 business days, another said 30 calendar days, and the last one couldn't even find my case notes. It's like they're all reading from different scripts! The most frustrating part is how they act like WE'RE the problem when their own system is broken. I've been paying into unemployment insurance for over 8 years through my employers - this isn't charity, it's insurance I'm entitled to use! Thanks for sharing the September timeline info though, at least now I have something concrete to reference when I call back. Going to start documenting everything like others suggested here.

Welcome to the club nobody wants to be in! 😩 The inconsistent information from different agents is probably the most maddening part of this whole process. I've started asking for agent names/ID numbers when they give me timelines just so I can reference it in future calls. It's crazy how we have to become experts in their own system just to get benefits we've literally paid for. Definitely document everything - dates, times, what they told you, even take screenshots of your CONNECT account showing the pending issue. At least we're all suffering through this together!

This is infuriating but sadly not surprising. I'm going through the exact same "Benefit Charging" nightmare right now - been stuck for 5 weeks and counting. Every agent gives me a different story about timelines, and I swear they're just making up dates to get us off the phone. What really gets me is how they lecture us about having "backup plans" when unemployment insurance IS the backup plan we've all been paying into! I've been contributing to this system for 10+ years through payroll deductions, and now when I actually need it, they act like I'm asking for a handout. The part about your agent mumbling when you asked about HIS backup plan is priceless though 😂 These people have secure government jobs telling unemployed folks to "plan better" - the irony is unreal. I'm definitely marking down that September 18th date and will be calling the minute it passes. Thanks for sharing the timeline info - at least now I have something concrete to reference instead of their usual "a few more weeks" nonsense.
