Where do I apply for unemployment in California EDD?
okay so I lost my job last Friday and I have no idea where to even start. my coworker told me I should apply for unemployment right away but I don't even know where to go to do that. do I go to some office in person? is there a website? someone mentioned California EDD but I don't really know what that is or how it works. I'm kind of panicking because I have rent due in three weeks and I need to get this figured out fast. any help would be appreciated, I've never done this before

You'll want to go to edd.ca.gov and file your claim online through UI Online. That's the California EDD portal where you apply for unemployment insurance benefits. The whole process is done digitally now, no need to go into an office. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and your last employer's info including their address and phone number. Once you submit the application it usually takes about 3 weeks to get a determination letter in the mail.

Authoroh thank you! so I just go to edd.ca.gov and there's a place to start an application? do I need to create an account first or can I just fill it out?

Omar Hassan
Yes you'll create a myEDD account first at myedd.edd.ca.gov, then from there you access UI Online to file. The account setup takes maybe 10 minutes and then you can start the actual application right after.

make sure you file asap, benefits don't start until you actually apply and there's a one week unpaid waiting period after that

First thing - file online at edd.ca.gov, don't wait. The date you apply is the date your benefit year starts so every day you delay is potentially money lost. The application itself walks you through everything step by step. After you apply you'll also need to verify your identity through ID.me which is a separate step they'll email you about. That part confused a lot of people when they first introduced it so just watch for that email.

Authorwait there's a separate identity verification thing? what happens if I don't do that step?

If you don't complete the ID.me verification your payments get held up in a pending status. It's pretty straightforward though, you just upload a photo of your ID and do a quick selfie verification. Takes like 15 minutes.

the ID.me thing got me so frustrated, took me like 3 tries before it accepted my documents. just be patient with it

Adding to what others said - after you file your initial claim you'll need to start certifying for benefits every two weeks. This is called filing your weekly claims (even though you do it biweekly). You do this through UI Online as well. During certification you'll report any work you did and earnings during that period. Also important: California EDD requires you to be actively looking for work while collecting benefits, so keep a log of your job search activities because they can ask for it.

Authorhow many jobs do I need to apply to each week? is there like a minimum number?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
California EDD requires you to make at least three job search activities per week. Applying to jobs counts but so does things like attending a job fair, setting up a profile on a job site, or networking. Just keep records of everything - date, company, contact info, position.

I did not know it was 3 per week I thought it was still 1. glad they clarified this

I went through this exact same panic situation about 8 months ago, first time ever filing. One thing nobody told me was that after you apply there's usually a phone interview scheduled by California EDD to verify some of your separation details. Mine was about why I left my job. I almost missed the call because I didn't recognize the number. Save the EDD phone number 1-800-300-5616 in your contacts so you don't miss it if they call. Missing that interview can really delay everything.
0 coins
Freya Christensen
Authoroh wow I would have totally ignored that call. do they leave a voicemail if you miss it?
0 coins
Zara Mirza
Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, it depends on the situation. If you miss it, try calling back as soon as possible. Getting through to an agent can be really difficult though, the hold times are brutal. I actually used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I was trying to reach EDD about my interview - it basically gets you in the queue to talk to a real agent without you sitting on hold for hours. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. Saved me a ton of stress.

seconding the phone call thing, I missed mine and it sent my claim into adjudication for an extra 5 weeks. answer every call from an unknown number while your claim is processing

WHERE DO YOU APPLY - edd.ca.gov - that's it. stop overthinking and just go do it RIGHT NOW. every single day you wait is another day you won't get paid. the system calculates your benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in the past 18 months so also have your pay stubs handy when you fill it out
0 coins
Freya Christensen
Authorlol okay okay I'm going right now. do I need pay stubs literally in front of me or is it just for reference?
0 coins
Chloe Robinson
just for reference to help you fill in your earnings info accurately. the EDD does verify with your employer but having ballpark numbers helps you fill out the form correctly the first time

One more important thing about where to apply - make sure you're going to the official California EDD site. There are third party sites that charge you money to help you file but you absolutely do not need to pay anyone for this. The official site is edd.ca.gov and it's completely free to apply. The UI Online portal is built right into that site.

Freya Christensen
Authoroh good to know, I saw some sites that looked kind of sketchy when I googled it
0 coins
Diego Chavez
Yeah the official site is a bit clunky but it works. If you have trouble navigating it just search 'UI Online California EDD' specifically and the direct link should come up.

Nia Harris
those third party sites are predatory imo, targeting people in already stressful situations

NeonNebula
not to stress you out more but when you apply they're gonna ask for your reason for separation (why you left the job). if you were laid off just say layoff/lack of work. if you quit or were fired it gets more complicated and might go into adjudication which means they investigate before approving your claim. just be honest about what happened
0 coins
Freya Christensen
AuthorI was laid off so hopefully that's the simple route. my whole department got cut
0 coins
NeonNebula
mass layoff is the easiest case honestly, they usually process those pretty smoothly. you might not even need that phone interview I mentioned earlier
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
Mass layoffs are definitely faster to process. You may want to see if your employer filed a WARN notice with the state - if they laid off 75+ employees they were supposed to give 60 days notice or pay in lieu of it, which is separate from unemployment

i applied for the first time three months ago and it was way less scary than I expected once I actually started. the UI Online application has a progress bar and saves your progress so if you get interrupted you don't lose everything. took me about 45 minutes total to complete the whole thing
0 coins
Freya Christensen
Authorthat's really reassuring, 45 minutes isn't bad at all. did you get approved pretty quickly?
0 coins
Sean Kelly
took about 2.5 weeks for my first payment. the waiting is the hardest part honestly
0 coins
Zara Mirza
2.5 weeks is pretty good, mine took almost 4 weeks because of that missed phone interview I mentioned

Since you're new to this whole process here's a quick checklist of what to have ready before you start the California EDD application: - Social Security Number - Driver's license or state ID - Last employer's full legal name, address, and phone number - Your employment start and end dates - Reason for separation - Wages earned in the last 18 months (approximate is fine) - Direct deposit banking info if you want payments deposited directly Having these ready will make the process way smoother.

Authorthis is so helpful thank you. one question - what if I worked for two different employers in the past year? do I list both?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
Yes list all employers from the past 18 months. California EDD will look at your full earnings history to calculate your weekly benefit amount. Your claim is based on a base period which is usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters.
0 coins
Luca Russo
also if any of your past employers were out of state or you did gig work it gets a little more complicated, might be worth a call to EDD to clarify
0 coins
Luca Russo
something I wish someone had told me: after you apply, log back into UI Online regularly to check for any notices or requests. California EDD might ask for additional documentation or clarification and if you miss those requests it can hold up your whole claim. I had a request sitting in there for like two weeks before I noticed it because I assumed no news was good news
0 coins
Freya Christensen
Authoroh that's a really good tip, I'll make sure to check back frequently
0 coins
Luca Russo
yeah check at minimum every few days. they also sometimes send letters to your mailing address so make sure your address in the system is current

Real talk about the phone situation with California EDD - if you ever need to call them for anything, 8am on a Monday is the worst possible time. Early Wednesday or Thursday mornings tend to have shorter wait times in my experience. The main number is 1-800-300-5616. Still expect to wait but it's way better than Monday mornings.

NeonNebula
I've heard Tuesday mornings right at 8am when they open is actually good? but honestly it's kind of a lottery

Diego Chavez
honestly yeah it varies so much week to week. I eventually just used Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I absolutely needed to get through for something urgent. You can watch how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - basically gets you connected to an actual EDD agent without the hours of hold music. For stuff that can't wait it was worth it

Authorbookmarking that for if I need it. hopefully my application goes smoothly and I won't need to call

I remember when I first applied I was so confused about the difference between filing the initial claim versus filing weekly certifications. They're two totally separate things! The initial claim is a one-time thing to set up your benefits. Then every two weeks you have to log back in and certify that you were available for work, did your job searches, and report any earnings. Missing a certification week can mess up your payments
0 coins
Freya Christensen
Authorwait so I have to keep logging in every two weeks forever while I'm collecting? I thought it was just a one time thing
0 coins
Nia Harris
yep every two weeks while you're collecting benefits. it only takes like 5 minutes once you know what you're doing but you have to do it consistently
0 coins
Sean Kelly
and if you miss a week you can still certify retroactively for a limited time but there's a pop up warning you have to acknowledge. just don't let it go too long

Quick note on the benefit amount because people always wonder about this - California EDD pays roughly 60-70% of your regular wages up to a weekly maximum. The maximum weekly benefit amount in California right now is $450. So if you were making a lot you'll definitely feel the cut, but if you were in a lower or mid wage job it might actually cover most of your usual take home pay
0 coins
Freya Christensen
Authorthat's actually more than I expected. I was making decent money so it'll be a pay cut but manageable

Zara Mirza
Yeah it's not luxurious but it's meant to be a bridge while you job hunt. The key is filing fast so you start that bridge ASAP

also remember UI benefits are taxable income federally, you can choose to have 10% withheld or deal with it at tax time

Since you mentioned panic about rent - just know that California EDD also has some emergency assistance programs through your county if you end up in a real crunch while waiting for UI to process. Look up your county's social services department. Not trying to stress you further, just good to know those options exist as a backup
0 coins
Freya Christensen
AuthorI didn't know that was a thing, thank you for mentioning it
0 coins
Omar Hassan
Yeah 211.org is a good starting point, you can search by zip code for local assistance programs for utilities, rent, food, etc. Hopefully your EDD claim processes fast and you won't need it but good to have in your back pocket

has anyone had issues with the myEDD account creation? I'm asking for my sister who is trying to apply right now and keeps getting an error when she tries to create her account. we don't know if it's a browser issue or something else
0 coins
Diego Chavez
Tell her to try Chrome or Firefox if she's on Safari, the EDD site is notoriously glitchy on Safari. Also clearing cache and cookies before trying again sometimes helps. If she still can't create the account she should call EDD tech support at 1-833-978-2511, that's separate from the main claims line
0 coins
Luca Russo
thank you! will pass this along, she's been trying for two days and getting frustrated

also make sure she's going to myedd.edd.ca.gov specifically and not trying to create an account directly on edd.ca.gov, they're separate login systems and it's confusing

coming back to update - I actually helped a friend apply for the first time last week using this thread as a guide and it went really smoothly! One thing we noticed is the application now has a section asking about any severance or vacation pay payout you received when you were let go. Make sure you report that accurately because it can affect when your benefits start
0 coins
Freya Christensen
Authoroh that's a good point, I did get a small severance. so that delays when benefits start?
0 coins
Sean Kelly
It can depending on how much it was and how it was paid out. If it was a lump sum vs continued salary makes a difference. Might be worth a quick call to EDD to clarify your specific situation
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
Severance paid as salary continuation can push back your claim's start date, but lump sum severance is handled differently. The EDD looks at whether it replaces wages for a specific period.

One thing I'll add having been through the process twice now - keep a folder (physical or digital) with everything related to your claim. Screenshots of confirmations, copies of letters, dates of every phone call with agent names if you can get them, notes on what was said. If your claim ever goes into adjudication or you need to appeal anything, having that paper trail is invaluable
0 coins
Freya Christensen
Authorthat's really smart, I'm going to start doing that from day one
0 coins
Zara Mirza
Also photograph or scan any physical mail from EDD before you do anything with it. I've seen people accidentally throw away important notices thinking it was junk mail

Nia Harris
yes to all of this. I learned the hard way when my claim went into adjudication and I had to reconstruct a whole timeline from memory

One last thing nobody mentioned - if for any reason you can't reach EDD by phone and you have an urgent issue with your claim, there's also an option to visit an EDD office in person. You can find the nearest one at labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov. The offices do have limited hours and you typically need an appointment for certain services. For most things phone or online is faster but it's an option if all else fails. Also again recommending Claimyr at claimyr.com if you need an agent fast - got me through in under an hour when I had a billing issue on my claim that couldn't wait. The video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains the whole thing.
