What is unemployment pay and how does California EDD calculate your benefit amount?
So I just got laid off last week and honestly have no idea how any of this works. I keep hearing people talk about unemployment pay but nobody actually explains what it IS. Like is it just a flat amount everyone gets? Does it depend on what you were making before? I went on the California EDD website and it's honestly so confusing I don't even know where to start. Can someone break this down in plain english? How do they figure out what you get paid and how long does it last? Also do you get paid weekly or what? Sorry if this is a super basic question I've just never had to deal with this before.

No need to apologize, this is actually one of the most common questions people have when they first file. Let me break it down as simply as I can. Unemployment pay through California EDD is called your Weekly Benefit Amount, or WBA. It's NOT a flat rate - it's calculated based on what you earned during something called your base period. Your base period is basically the 12 months of work history California EDD looks at when figuring out how much you get. Here's the short version of how they calculate it: they look at your highest-earning quarter (3-month period) during your base period, and your weekly benefit amount ends up being roughly 60-70% of what you were earning, up to a maximum. In 2025 the maximum weekly benefit amount in California is $450 per week. You can get paid for up to 26 weeks on a regular claim as long as you keep meeting eligibility requirements.

AuthorWait so the max is $450 a week? That seems really low if you were making decent money. Is there any way to get more than that?
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
Yeah unfortunately $450 is the current cap regardless of how much you were earning. It's been a point of frustration for a lot of higher earners. California has been debating raising it but hasn't yet as of 2025.

this is good info. i did not know there was a maximum when i filed last year and was surprised when my amount was lower than expected

Adding onto what the person above said - the calculation formula California EDD uses is actually pretty specific. They take the wages from your highest earning quarter in the base period and divide by 26 to get your WBA. So if you earned $15,000 in your best quarter, your weekly benefit would be around $576 - but since the max is $450, you'd be capped there. The best way to estimate your amount before you even finish filing is to use the UI Online benefit calculator on the California EDD website. You just plug in your quarterly earnings and it spits out an estimate. Not 100% exact but gives you a solid ballpark.

AuthorOh I didn't know there was a calculator! I'll look for that. Do I need to already have an account to use it or can anyone access it?

You can access it without an account - just go to the main EDD website and search for benefit calculator. It's in the UI section.

the calculator is pretty accurate i used it before filing and it was within like $10 of my actual amount

Ok real talk though - before you even worry about the amount, you need to make sure you can actually GET through to California EDD to sort out any issues with your claim. I filed in January and spent literally two weeks trying to reach someone because my claim got held up. Calling EDD is an absolute nightmare. Somebody in another thread mentioned a service called Claimyr that basically gets you connected to a live EDD agent without you having to sit on hold for hours. I was skeptical but tried it and actually got through same day. Their site is claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - honestly wish I had known about it sooner because I was going crazy trying to reach someone.

AuthorIs that actually legit? I'm always nervous about third party stuff when it involves government benefits

I had the same concern honestly. But it just helps you get connected to EDD - you're still talking directly to an actual EDD agent, Claimyr just handles the hold queue part basically. Nothing sketchy about it.

I've heard of this too. When I was dealing with my adjudication last fall the EDD phone lines were impossible. Wish I had known about claimyr.com then

NOBODY tells you this stuff when you first get laid off and it is SO frustrating. I remember being completely lost. The EDD website is honestly designed by people who assume you already know everything about unemployment lol. One thing to know - your unemployment pay isn't just handed to you automatically. You have to file what's called a weekly certification (or weekly claim) every week to actually receive each payment. You certify that you were able to work, available for work, and actively looking for jobs. If you miss a week you can lose that payment entirely. California EDD is very strict about this.
0 coins
Romeo Barrett
AuthorWait I have to do something every single week?? I thought you just filed once and got the money. How do I certify each week?
0 coins
Leslie Parker
Yep every week! You can do it online through UI Online on the EDD website or by phone using EDD Tele-Cert. Online is way easier. They ask you a series of yes/no questions about the past week - did you work, did you look for jobs, were you available for work, etc. Takes maybe 5 minutes once you know what you're doing.

Marina Hendrix
This is really important info. The weekly certification is how EDD confirms you're still eligible. Missing certifications is one of the most common mistakes new claimants make.

also just to add - unemployment pay is taxable income! a lot of people dont realize this and then get surprised at tax time. you can choose to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you set up your claim. california doesnt tax unemployment benefits but federal does
0 coins
Romeo Barrett
AuthorOh wow I had no idea it was taxable. That's really good to know. How do I set up the withholding?
0 coins
Justin Trejo
when you file your initial claim theres an option to withhold 10% for federal taxes. if you already filed without selecting it you can update it in your UI Online account settings i believe

Alana Willis
Correct - you can change your tax withholding preference at any time through UI Online. The option is under payment preferences or account settings. Definitely worth doing so you don't owe a big chunk at tax time.

The other thing nobody explains clearly is the waiting week. When you first get approved for unemployment pay in California, your very first week is an unpaid waiting week. So even if you're approved immediately, you won't get paid for that first week of your claim. Just want to set expectations because a lot of people file and then wonder why their first payment seems short.
0 coins
Romeo Barrett
AuthorSo basically I lose one week of pay just as a waiting period? That's annoying but good to know ahead of time I guess.
0 coins
Sara Unger
Yeah it's basically a one week deductible. It's been the rule in California forever. Week 2 and onward you get paid as long as you certify and stay eligible.

The waiting week thing frustrated me so much when I first filed. Felt like penalizing people who just lost their job. But yeah it's just how the system works unfortunately

Something I went through that might be relevant - I had a situation where my claim got sent to adjudication because my former employer contested my unemployment. During adjudication your payments are frozen while EDD investigates whether you actually qualify. Mine took about 5 weeks and I was going absolutely insane not knowing what was happening or when I'd get money. The thing is adjudication is really hard to get information on - the online account doesn't tell you much and trying to call was futile. That's when I finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and was able to actually talk to someone at EDD about where my case stood. Turned out there was a simple documentation issue that I was able to resolve quickly once I could actually talk to a person.
0 coins
Romeo Barrett
AuthorWhat does adjudication mean exactly? Is that something that could happen to me?
0 coins
Freya Ross
Adjudication basically means EDD is investigating your claim before approving it. It can happen for various reasons - employer contests your layoff, there's something unclear about your separation from the job, income discrepancies, etc. Not everyone goes through it but it's super common and it's really stressful because payments are on hold the whole time.
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
To add to this - if your claim does go to adjudication you'll get a notice asking for specific information. Respond to it as quickly as possible with any supporting documentation. The faster you respond the faster it usually gets resolved.

Leslie Parker
adjudication was the worst experience of my EDD journey. weeks of uncertainty and near-impossible to get info on where things stood. claimyr.com was honestly the only thing that helped me get actual answers

how long does it take to actually get paid after you file? asking because im in a similar situation as OP and trying to figure out my budget
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
Typically if everything goes smoothly and there are no issues with your claim, you can expect your first payment within 3-4 weeks of filing. That accounts for the waiting week plus EDD processing time. If your claim goes to adjudication it can be much longer unfortunately.

Alana Willis
In my experience it was about 3 weeks from when I filed to when I got my first deposit. Make sure you set up your payment method in UI Online - you can choose direct deposit to a bank account or a Bank of America EDD debit card. Direct deposit is faster.

ok good to know thank you. i have my direct deposit set up already so hopefully it wont take too long

can u get unemployment if u quit your job? my situation is a little different and wondering if the rules are the same
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
Generally no - unemployment in California is designed for people who lost their job through no fault of their own, like layoffs. If you voluntarily quit, you'd typically be disqualified unless you can show you had good cause to quit, like unsafe working conditions, major change in job duties, or something similar that made continuing work unreasonable.
0 coins
Sergio Neal
what counts as good cause? i quit because my boss was making the environment really hostile
0 coins
Leslie Parker
Hostile work environment can potentially qualify but you'd need documentation - HR complaints, emails, witnesses, etc. EDD will look at whether you tried to resolve the situation before quitting and whether a reasonable person would have quit in the same circumstances. It's worth filing and explaining your situation honestly.

UPDATE: I filed my initial claim yesterday! It was a lot easier than I expected actually. The online process walked me through everything step by step. Now I'm just in the waiting period I guess. One question - it says my claim is being processed, how do I know if it goes to adjudication or if it just gets approved normally?
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
Great that you got it filed! You'll see updates in your UI Online account. If your claim goes to adjudication you'll get a notification in your account and usually a letter in the mail explaining what information they need from you. If it processes normally you'll just get an award notice showing your weekly benefit amount and claiming start date.
0 coins
Freya Ross
Check your UI Online account every few days and also watch your mail. EDD sends paper notices for important things and they don't always notify you by email first. Respond immediately to anything that asks for information - delays on your end = delays in getting paid.

For anyone new to this thread looking for a complete picture of what unemployment pay involves in California: 1. Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA): 60-70% of prior wages, max $450/week in 2025 2. Duration: Up to 26 weeks on a standard claim 3. Waiting week: First week is unpaid 4. Weekly certification: Must certify every week to receive each payment 5. Job search requirement: Must actively look for work and document your search activity 6. Taxable income: Federal taxes apply (CA does not tax UI benefits) 7. Payment options: Direct deposit or EDD debit card The faster you file after losing your job the better, since benefits typically start from your application date.

this is a really clean summary. should pin this to the top of the thread lol

The job search requirement is worth emphasizing - EDD requires you to contact at least 3 employers per week and log the details. They can audit your job search records so keep good documentation.
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
didnt know about the 3 employer contacts requirement. is that verified anywhere on the EDD website?
0 coins
Alana Willis
Yes, it's outlined in the California UI Code and referenced in your UI Online account. When you certify weekly there's a question about your job search activities. EDD can request your job search log at any time.

Butch Sledgehammer
The job search log requirement tripped me up early on. I didn't realize I needed to keep records until I got a notice from EDD asking me to submit my job search log for a random audit period. Scrambled to reconstruct everything which was stressful. Now I keep a simple spreadsheet: company name, contact method, position applied for, date, response if any. Takes like 2 minutes per application to log and could save you a lot of headaches. EDD disqualifications for failing job search requirements are not fun to deal with.
0 coins
Romeo Barrett
AuthorThat's a really helpful tip about the spreadsheet. What do they do if they audit you and your records aren't complete?
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
Potentially disqualify you for those weeks and make you pay back any benefits received during that period. It becomes an overpayment situation and those are a nightmare to deal with. Much easier to just keep the log from day one.
0 coins
Sergio Neal
oh no i haven't been keeping a log and i've been on unemployment for 6 weeks already. can i still start now and make a retroactive log?
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
Start keeping records immediately going forward. For past weeks, reconstruct what you can from email confirmations, LinkedIn activity, Indeed applications - anywhere that timestamps your job search activity. It's not ideal but better than nothing if you're audited.

Can we talk about how insane it is to try to reach EDD by phone when you have a question about your claim? I've been on unemployment twice in the past 4 years and both times calling EDD was a complete nightmare. Hours on hold, getting disconnected, calling back and starting over. The callback system doesn't always work either. I don't know why the state can't figure out how to properly staff their call center. These are people dealing with financial stress and the system makes it as hard as possible to get basic answers.

Freya Ross
Completely agree. My last claim I spent probably 15+ hours total just trying to get through on the phone over the course of a month. It's genuinely inhumane when you're already stressed about money.

Butch Sledgehammer
This is exactly why I recommend Claimyr to everyone dealing with EDD phone issues. I know I mentioned it earlier but seriously - claimyr.com completely changed my experience. Instead of camping on the phone for hours I was connected to an EDD agent within the same day. The video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows exactly what the process looks like. For anything that requires talking to an actual person it's a game changer.

One thing I want to clarify because I see confusion about this a lot - unemployment pay and disability pay through California EDD are two completely different programs. SDI (State Disability Insurance) is for when you can't work due to a medical condition. UI (Unemployment Insurance) is for when you lost your job and are actively looking for new work. You can't collect both at the same time and the eligibility rules are completely different. Make sure you're filing under the right program for your situation.
0 coins
Sergio Neal
Wait I've been confused about this. I hurt my back at work and was wondering if I should file for unemployment. Sounds like maybe disability is what I should look at?
0 coins
Sara Unger
If your injury is preventing you from working, yes - SDI (State Disability Insurance) through EDD is likely more appropriate. For UI you have to certify that you're able and available to work, which wouldn't be the case if you're injured. Look into SDI on the EDD website.
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
This is correct and an important distinction. Filing for the wrong program can actually create complications and delays. If you're unsure which applies to your situation, calling EDD is the best option - or if you can't get through, that's a case where Claimyr might help you get answers quickly.

Something that confused me when I was new to this - the EDD debit card vs direct deposit question. I initially went with the EDD Bank of America debit card because I thought it would be faster. It was actually slower and more annoying to manage than just having it direct deposited to my bank account. If you have a bank account, set up direct deposit. It's faster, there are no weird ATM fees to worry about, and it's easier to track. You can change your payment method in UI Online anytime.
0 coins
Romeo Barrett
AuthorI set up direct deposit when I filed so hopefully that'll be smooth. Good to know it's generally faster.

the edd debit card has fees for certain transactions which nobody warns you about. direct deposit to your own bank is definitely better if you have that option

totally off topic but has anyone dealt with being on standby status? my company does seasonal layoffs and every year i file for unemployment during the off season. standby lets you not have to do the full job search requirement which is nice. just want to make sure im still eligible for the same weekly benefit amount while on standby
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
Yes, your weekly benefit amount is the same whether you're on standby or doing an active job search - the WBA is based on your prior earnings not your job search activity. Standby status just waives the job search requirement because you have a definite return-to-work date. You still need to certify weekly and meet the other eligibility requirements.
0 coins
Justin Trejo
perfect thanks. yeah my employer always gives us a return date so standby makes sense for my situation
0 coins
Alana Willis
One thing to be careful with standby - if your employer changes the return date or if it gets pushed back too far, EDD may require you to start active job searching again. Keep your employer's documentation of your return date on file just in case.
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
does anyone know if part time work while on unemployment disqualifies you completely? i found a few hours of work but not enough to cover my bills
0 coins
Marina Hendrix
Part time work while collecting unemployment is allowed in California - it's actually encouraged. You just have to report your gross earnings for any week you work when you certify. EDD will reduce your weekly benefit amount based on what you earned, but you don't lose the benefits entirely. There's a formula but basically you keep more in combined income than you would from either source alone.
0 coins
Alana Willis
Specifically - EDD disregards the first 25% of your weekly benefit amount as earnings, and anything you earn above that gets deducted dollar for dollar from your WBA. So some part time work can actually increase your total income without costing you much in benefits.
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
oh that's way better than i thought. i was avoiding taking any work because i thought it would disqualify me. definitely going to pursue that part time opportunity now
0 coins

ALWAYS report your earnings accurately though. Underreporting or not reporting is considered fraud and can result in having to pay back overpayments plus penalties. Not worth the risk even for a small amount.

You have the right to appeal this disqualification! If you believe the determination is wrong you have 30 days from the date on the disqualification notice to file an appeal. Do not miss this deadline. You can file the appeal online through UI Online or by mailing the appeal form to EDD.
0 coins
Freya Ross
I went through a disqualification appeal last year. The key is gathering any evidence that shows you were actively looking for work during the disputed period - job search logs, application confirmations, etc. The appeals process is run by the CUIAB (California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board) which is independent from EDD.

Final update from OP - my claim got approved! Weekly benefit amount is $387 which isn't maximum but makes sense based on what I was earning. Getting my first actual payment (second week, since week one is the waiting week) in a few days. Thanks everyone in this thread - learned SO much. Key things I'm taking away: keep job search logs, certify every week without fail, report any earnings, watch your UI Online account for notices. This thread should honestly be stickied for new filers.
